  • This door panel came off the straight axle swap blazer. Due to poor design and many years of strain it split along the handle line. I'm sure there are better ways of fixing it, but this is my way using fiberglass to bond the parts and spread out the handle load.

    Mine broke at the 2 bolts behind the arm rest, where you pull it closed,, I'm going to try this, was thinking epoxy, but this might be better. Good video and idea..thanks brother!

      Did you manage to fix it? It's hard to get the holes drilled in just right so that the holes line up

    Those cheap plastic welders that use staples to melt into plastic works great and adds strength as well. then fiberglass over it

    Did you do anything to the screw holes that were busted behind the pull handle? Those 2 screws fasten the handle to the metal framework of the door and take the brunt of the force when pulling on the handle. When the screws pull through those 2 plastic holes the stress is transferred onto the rest of the door panel causing it to develop cracks along that seam. In my experience If those two screw holes are not reinforced the repairs made to the cracks in the panel will be short lived.

      That's my problem, going to try this or epoxy

      I tried to do that and one hole would line up with the frame but other wouldn't. It's so frustrating. I suppose practice makes perfection

    did you use regular fiberglass and poly? I'm going to be doing repairs to a door panel of mine and I am afraid the poly will melt the plastic

    • @SRMWorkshop
      @SRMWorkshop  4 месяца назад +1

      I was using normal glass and polyester resin, nothing fancy. So far I haven't had an issue with anything melting.

    Cool vid. I'm still researching the fiberglass subject but I'm about to repair/reinforce the cardboard door panels on my 99 N body - GM used what appears to be pressure treated molded cardboard covered in vinyl.Yeah, CARDBOARD LOL I'm contemplating covering the entire back side with a thin coating of resin to soak in and harden - Thoughts?
    Surprisingly, after 200k miles, it's the armrests that are worn out on every single one of them even at the wrecking yard.
    I want to recover the door panels so I'll be reinforcing other areas like the window switch bezel openings.

      @SRMWorkshop  3 года назад +1

      I did something similar for a head liner that was crumbing apart, so doing a thin soak in coat should help. I've also seen on wood products using CA glue (superglue) to help harden the surface.

      hello mark,
      what did you do with your door panels?Looking into doing the same in alfa romeo 75 because it seems that they used a low quality plastic with cardboard???
      I don't know but i;ve changed like 3 times and the ones i found now are in BRAND NEW condition!I am looking into reinforcing them before install
      i've been told for the armrest to use expanding foam and fiberglass the whole panel after that. What are your thoughts? What did you do?

    • @SRMWorkshop
      @SRMWorkshop  3 года назад +1

      @@victormamasulas1573 expanding foam is a good choice, it will not change shape or be harmed by the fiberglass resin.

      @@victormamasulas1573 the few that I have done I just re-enforced the seam between sections. The resin will soak into cardstock so you might do a thin coat just over those sections and let it set before adding fiber & resin. Also make sure the resin has a rough surface to key into, like rough up and smooth plastic you bond to with 80 grit.

      I lost touch with the owner a while back so who knows. as long as the fiberglass has a good surface to bond with it should hold up very well long term.

    How do you get the fiberglass resin off the paint brush

    • @SRMWorkshop
      @SRMWorkshop  5 месяцев назад +1

      You don't. The brush is cheap and it would cost more in thinner to get it all out of there. As for your other question I normally pull the tape while the resin is not fully cured. I poke at it, once it firms up but is still rubbery is normally a good time to remove the tape.
