  • 5 Tips and Techniques for Using Watercolor Markers!
Today I am going to share my top 5 techniques for getting the most from your water based markers! The markers I am using are the 60 dual tip watercolor marker set from Ohuhu: amzn.to/2GuUNe4
    Techniques:
    1. Coloring directly with the markers and blending dark to light
    2. Using a tile as a palette by scribbling swatches of marker then applying with a water brush or water based blending marker.
    3. Coloring directly with the markers and then blending with the water brush or blending pen.
    4. Use it like an inkpad: Coloring with markers directly on a rubber stamp, breathing on the stamp and stamping.
    5. Dragging color with a wet brush (from step 4) and filling in the design for a painterly look.
    Bonus tips!
*Use the fine tip end to add detail over colored image (after the image is dry)
    * Scribble the marker on a tile and pick up the ink with a sopping wet brush and spatter on color
These techniques work best on watercolor paper or bristol but as always you can try with what ever you have. I used the smooth side of this watercolor paper by arteza for today's projects:amzn.to/2nqpo3F
I have also had good luck with the following papers:
    Canson XL watercolor paper: amzn.to/2npFDOo
    Strathmore XL Bristol: amzn.to/2Envzxt
    Strathmore Bristol: amzn.to/2Gw19tM
    Fabriano Studio hot press: amzn.to/2BAPNkh
I use the above papers for watercolor stamping projects because they are inexpensive yet are high enough quality to give beautiful results. Those papers are not what I would use for paintings which require lifting and scrubbing or many layers by they are ideal for the techniques I showed in the video.
    Stamps!
    Pretty poppies Stamps (Stampendous) amzn.to/2DZHu6X
    Pretty Poppies Dies: amzn.to/2EltNgk
Pretty poppies die and stamp bundle: amzn.to/2Epng4s
    Stampendous feather stamps: amzn.to/2EksRJ7
    Waterbrushes: amzn.to/2FpBRft
Blender pen (make sure to get a waterbased one) amzn.to/2FsFXU8
Ohuhu Set of 60 Watercolor Markers for $22: amzn.to/2EmAxuB
Archival ink pad: amzn.to/2Gv1gFS and reinker: amzn.to/2DKocza
*If you need glycerin to revive your clear blending pen you can get it here: amzn.to/2DNSXTK or at a health food store or pharmacy

I just recently bought some Watercolor Markers because I have always wanted to try it out since I was 10! I'm now doing some research on them cause I got them for myself for my 13th Birthday. I got the tips and tricks that will help me out in my artistic journey, and this video is crazy good! I love how much information you gave me, and I also love how much information you put into the description box! I just got the really cheap watercolor paper, so I can try out my markers on the proper items! Thank you so much, it really helped me out a ton. :)

I was watching this and thinking how wonderfeul it is 2 have u and people like u doing these videos 2 help us learn r tools and the things we can do with them. This was so detailed. I wasn't left with a single question. LOVED that u showed so many options 2 get the same effect. I already picked which one I'll use. Thank u so much!

Started watching this while I ate breakfast. Usually don’t watch your colouring or painting videos, cuz I think I can’t do them. This video changed my mind. So well done and I think I will be able to follow your tips and techniques and expand my horizons. So, thank you. One last thing that I put in when appreciating your videos...please stop apologizing for the time it takes. You are working at warp speed and we can pause it when we are trying your techniques. The longer your videos are the happier I am. You add in little sprinkles of wisdom. Thank you. I appreciate you and all you do for us.

I love doing this with Crayola markers with flowers. I even did a piece with Snow White where I had her looking at her reflection using the markers applied in a couple different ways and the Crayola watercolor paint for the version of her. It gave some effects pretty much from the start with little trial and error before hand. It gave me time to see if I was going to really like it before buying even a small set of Cotman watercolor paints.

I usually just watch your videos but this time I have experimented and used my watercolour markers to use these techniques. I have made notes in my journal (which is just a sketchbook) but tomorrow I will go through the process again using watercolour paper. The creating of a journal is the best thing I have decided to do because I can leave the mistakes and make notes of what I should have done for a better result..takes away the anxiety of putting medium to paper. January is nearly over and I have managed to do something in my journal everyday!

I think I learned more in the last half hour than I ever learned in any art class I've ever taken. THANK YOU! I will be honest; I have those exact markers and I previously dismissed them as no good - because I did not know how to use them. I am going to dig them out and try out the blending techniques you've just shown. I know you kept thinking your video was getting to be too long, but if you fill it with helpful techniques and show us how to use the things we have I don't think you have to worry about that!

I would like to contact you personally because I am new and am trying to get my stash somewhat together. @@thefrugalcrafter Hey Lindsay , first thanks for another awesome video I can’t tell you how much I have learned from you in SO many mediums now! I just HAVE TO KNOW if the brush tips on these markers actually hold up or if they tend to fray rather quickly. I saw a review and they showed images of the brushes looking really bad only after doing that review video and I cancelled my order immediately in a money waste alert panic!! Please tell me if they have lasted for you or not and in advance thank you so much ((I’m going all in for the 120 set with case to use for cards and practice and planning out artworks for my alcohol markers and DEFINITELY lettering and stuff maybe water coloring too))

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  3 года назад +3

@@pantalonious3984 I haven't had any fraying in any of my Ohuhu brush markers, watwrbased or alcohol. The alcohol brush tips are reversible so 8f they start to fray you can flip the tip around for a fresh one. I haven't had to do that yet on any of mine tho.

Excellent video Lindsay, as always, I have watched so many of your videos over the years but I don't think I've ever thanked you enough. I have learned so much from you, from how to make a geli plate to making jewelry, die cutting and your terrific watercoloring skills. I'm not great at watercolorng but have gotten better thanks to you...I never had water color brushes or pens but recently bought some inexpensive Lizart watercolor brushes that come with a plain water brush and paper, they aren't too bad for about 20.00 on Amazon, because I can actually make something decent with them, lol. I also bought some Spectrum Aqua markers after seeing your video and I love them. I like wetting my image, scribbling the marker on my glass mat or tile then going in with the color. I guess because it gives a more real watercolor feel. I let it dry then go back and add more color if it's not bright enough. I do like the brightness though of using the markers to blend like you prefer, I'm still practicing that technique because I can't get the blend I want with that process yet. I think my paper is decent. But it's fun, and I love it. Thanks again, I so enjoy your videos. BTW, I love these stamps and have already added them to my cart for later. Take care and God Bless. Two Lucky people will be getting those gorgeous cards, great job!

I really like these techniques Lindsay, the result is Fabulous and that's make me feel more confident to use watercolor Markers. Thank You so much for the great tutorial, i kind of like these Ohuhu dual tips markers and your cards are both Gorgeous! I've learn so many things on this video and i really appreciated you've made that one on real time so much easier to learn and follow!

So excited to create my own greeting cards...needed a new hobby. Loved this video and printed your supply list. Off i go to order a bunch of stuff. I tried colored pencil classes and didn't like the results. This is so much nicer in all respects. Thx

I have 2 sets of Tombow-skin and grayscale. WIN on these for adding a LOT of colors for less. They will be mine. I dont use them a lot, but I want a rounder collection. I likely will use them more! LOVE that poppy stamp set! I keep looking, but never buy...might HAVE to! xo The card turned out lovely. I enjoy most all of your work!

Wow! How beautiful! Those feathers are gorgeous and look like real feathers laying on paper!
I purchased the Ohuhu Markers but I think they are Alcohol ones...they have chisel and bullet tip
