  • Making fire without anything else but unprepared natural materials, taken straight from the nature. This might be a piece of cake in some parts of the world, but in this video, I make the fire in Finland in late winter/early spring in 21th March. It´s still freezing cold and snow has melted away only from the warmest hills.
All the materials I use in this film are straight from nature. I went to woods about 2.00 pm and the fire was burning in 5.00 pm.
I´ve done fire in this way numerous time in every time of year.
In summer this time is shorter and in the middle of winter it could take even two days to get the fire.
My favourite materials are red cedar and chaga. In this video I did not find any red cedar, so I use aspen. Not as good, but while the aspen is in right state, it´s good enough.
There are many things to know to get exactly right materials.
In northern world this is even more important, because here the moisture is very high and low temperatures does not dry the materials.
I hope you´ll enjoy the video!

Thanks for the great tutorial. As you say, never give up. Landscape and flora are very similar here in the north of WIsconsin and Michigan's Upper Peninsula ... and there are a lot of immigrant Finns, too. I know what you mean about the chaga. There is a young couple in our local area who gather it in the forest and then sell it processed as tea at the farmers markets ... and not cheap.

I have just started my journey into primitive fire making, Here in North America the Native American was the Master of this skill, Its very interesting the similarties between the two Continents and yet the small individual European differances to the quest for fire.

Aika kova veto. Onnistuu näemmä Suomen oloissakin suoraan metsästä, jos taitoa riittää.

ZapeZeam Onnistuu toki. Taitoa enemmän tarvitaan malttia ja ennenkaikkea harjaantunut silmä valikoimaan materiaalit.

Great video. Chaga is great stuff indeed. The tea is healthy but not really my taste but as tinder I do use it. Keep up the good work.

To get heat is important make insulator layer over the hole and shielding it of wind. Not bad idea to collect all nessesary stuff ready next to hole.

No chaga or similar in my region of the U.S. I wonder if slightly rotted wood would do as well?

Rotten wood is the worst to catch fire. Try finding hoof fungus if you can.
