- Today we use the Kubota MX 5400 and Land Pride Grapple to get a small White Oak Log to the Woodmizer LX 150 Sawmill. This log only measures 10" at the small end and we are trying to find out if these small hardwood logs are worth sawing or should they go for firewood.

Mike, Rex from Charlotte here. The cherry trees just amaze me, the way they grow so tall with the beautiful grain. We just have the decorative cherry trees, and cherry wood is very expensive for us. The Oak is really nice too that you are milling! North Carolina has lots of Poplar trees which is the sofest hard wood and reasonably priced but the grain is just ordinary. The state tree here is the Pine tree and we do have a lot of species and some quite clear and nice grain but not a hardwood. Love the videos and I send my very best to you Melissa and your entire family! I enjoy Morgans Off the Leash so tell Melissa to keep it up!
“Hold down the couch”
I love it 😂😂😂
That’s me watching Thi !!! 🤗🤗🤗
Hi from Waxhaw, NC. Just want to say that my grandfather built his whole house out of oak. He quartered saw the boards for the floor and woodwork around the windows and doors. After he finished varnishing it, it was like looking at a rare jewel. He also built his dining room table and chairs out of oak. Curly maple was also one of his favorites. I asked him once why he'd built his home out of oak when no one else did, and he told me, "Son, I want it to last forever," and as far as I know it's still standing over 80-years later. Another great wood, that is more suited for fence posts in Black Locust. For every one you cut, 7 more grow back from the stump - they call them the 100-year post because that's how long they last. As always, I like watching you work and talk. Somethings I agree with and some things I don't, but again, I'm a lot older than you, and having lived in the woods, farmed, wired, and used heavy machinery, I've learned a whole lot about life and people. You folks are "down home" people like me. So keep the good stuff coming and I'll keep watching just to see home much your learning as the years' pass. Happy New Year.
Hi Mike , great video. Cant wait to see your big building get completed. I have watched your videos ever since you started and when you tore down the chicken shed , and trees , etc. Your older videos are very educational too. Thank you for what you do.
Would love to see you do a walk thru the woods to identify each of the trees on the property. Like what differences are while the trees are still standing. Great video content.
Great idea
@@OutdoorsWithTheMorgans i could probably open a book but Mike would make it more interesting. Be safe and happy new year.
Watching you fell trees to the saw mill or chopping wood for fires is relaxing to me. Thank you for sharing your time with us. Happy New Year to your family too.
Another great video. Your probably getting the weather i had. Instead the weather guessers said 1/2 - 1 inch of snow. We ended up with 5 inches.
Sorry for the late comment guys! Just been busy around here. Mike, I think you have better accuracy than most weather men. I've noticed that you are greater than 90% accurate in predicting the weather I will get 12 hours after you! It actually would have a nice ring to it now..... Can you hear someone saying "And now we send you over to meteorologist Mike Morgan"!🤣🤣🤣
Anytime you can score a few quarter sawn oak boards...man it s worth it. Love it...envy you man. Great vid brother.
In looking at the sawn wood of white oak it looks a lot like the red oak. Sometime maybe you could show a side by side comparison of the two woods. Thanks for all the great videos! You guys rock.
MIKE, in all seriousness, in this video, How long did it actually take you from your trip into the woods, to get that saw log onto the mill ? It was 6:45 minutes on edited video, but with all set up for the cameras and walking, to take those shots, ....how much time did it REALLY take you? You really put in alot of thought to make great content !
Here in Hickory, NC it's dry and gonna reach 66° today. Rained all day yesterday. Fall Line Ridge, this guy has a Woodmizer LT15 I think it is, recently bought a Kubota tractor. He treats his equipment bad. He cleared land for a garden, used grapple to plow debris away. He was cutting a log, hit a lag bolt, the saw shuttered so he stopped it, and for some reason raised the saw w the blade still in the log. As I watch you, Mike, I can't help noticing how well you treat your equipment. That goes a long way w me. I've gotta go so don't have time to watch yesterday's video, so I'll catch it later. I can't remember the hint. I have heard you many times say how you're not a professional, but everything I've watched you do, I see a professional doing it! You're a smart guy Mike and you're channel is high quality! Thanks for today's video. Get that sawmill under roof so you can stay off the couch.👍
Great lumber im just amazed
I am thinking you are going to put up a pole barn for the saw mill. Also maybe purchasing some more land with more trees to harvest. Maybe a feller buncher with a pull behind logging trailer for cutting the logs and firewood.
As you have mentioned in previous videos, it depends on how much a person values the end result. If there is a market for it then it may be worthwhile, however, when you factor in all costs associated with milling it up, it might be cheaper to cut it for firewood. HAPPY NEW YEAR to you and your family. May the Lord bless your family richly over this next year.
HI mike can always find a use for lumber an with the recent lumber mill fires an forest fires the effects will be generational and timber prices will continue to increase have a day love from TEXAS
Mike i have to give it to you i dont know how you do the amount of videos you do i struggle to get 2 out a week on my channel anyhow that wood mizer does a wonderful job we have the timber king which is hydraulic saves the back alot anyhow thanks for the video
I absolutely LOVE hardwoods, especially cherry and oak. If I had a mill and my own logs, I’d be sorely tempted to try and saw EVERYTHING, especially given what the stuff is going for in the big boxes. I suppose you have to set standards but some solid 4x4s or 6x6 out of the small stuff should attract some folks. Porch posts anyone?
Mike I picked up on the hint as soon as that video started. I see you don`t plan on letting coton top3 have all the glory I can`t wait to see how big of a minnie ex you get. I know coton top has had great service from his kabota. now don`t forget being as how you deaal with logs alot don`t forget to get a log grapple like he has you can load logs on the mill easier. I love to watch you rich guys buy more stuff. it makes my day cause I don`t have to pay for it
It would be hard to cut that size log to make furniture but that is a perfect size for molding to trim out that game room and your office.
As someone else has mentioned my guess is that your getting an excavator by the toy one you had sitting on the railing
That was going to be my guess as well. I gotta get here earlier!
My thought as well
Makes sense. He did say he would be digging the pool this spring in an earlier video.
bingo!
I hope you use the sawmill slats for fire wood. I use to buy them from the local saw mill until they closed down. I added in with other wood of course but there great starter pieces.
Definitely getting a mini excavator. Mike is going to need it to dig in all the plumbing in the new building and tying into the septic for the drains and what not.
Don't forget Melissa's and Hunter's pool
Mike I dont see you using the debarker too much. In your opinion is it worth buying as a option for a mill?
Ya , on the stair top . A , serious earth mover !!!
Happy New Year!
I love quarter sawing white oak
Looks like the center would make a nice beam, header.
Good morning everyone, overslept this morning. 24º in Kansas City now. Went to Bass Pro while it was snowing yesterday with only a handful of other customers in the store. Problem is they are sold out of all firearms related merchandise. Stay safe, be humble & kind and Have a day.
Hey Mike, I see you didn’t use the debarker?
Mike Morgan For Governor of Pennsylvania.
Free tractor 🚜 and chainsaw for everyone !
😁😆😅🤣😂🐕🐕🐕👍✌🇺🇲
I know that was pretty much tongue in cheek but I'm also leaning my thinking that Mike just might prefer everyone do some work and earn their own tractor and chainsaw. 💪💪💪👌👏
@@neilx2669 You right it was a sarcastic comment...with all the "free" 💰 showing up in bank accounts...never seen anything like it myself. I figure Mike would give all a 🚜 and a chainsaw to go along with the gubmint gas⛽ money 💰. 😆 🤣 😂 ✌🇺🇲
Getting an excavator. I saw The toy the first time. Just didn’t get clue.
Nice. I totally recall this now. Just thought he showed it because they said Ty loved that toy but I bet it was the hint.
Im with you on this one too
He needs to get that mill raise up. Save his back in the future, trailered.
Always saw your logs the way the tree grows. Saw them butt first, up through the log.
The boards you have left would make a great dining table with all of them different widths.
The toy mini-excavator at the beginning of the previous video. I believe that's the clue. I almost posted a comment about it on that video.
I’m from Boone Ia and started watching vid # 467
Hi Adam.
I’m guessing new for for 2021 Piper is going to have puppies based on your comment from yesterday’s video. 😃
Hey Mike...just wondering if you use your slabs off the mill for fire wood or do you do something else with them.Sawmills in my area....West Tn....give slabs away to use for firewood.
I reckon that you're going to get the sawmill under cover in a similar fashion to the three-sided "woodshed/equipment store"....
Mike you said you were going to hold the couch down the rest of the day , around here we say we are going to do some mechanic work , going to put a rear-end in a recliner !
Mike, why aren't you using the Bark-a-lator thingy to keep the blade from getting dull as fast?
you could go down to 2 1/2 in. wide and use for face frames on cabinets for your play room. then use six and seven in. glued together for doors and tops. mix cherry tops and oak fronts
Happy new year Morgans! I’ve been binge watching the Wolfe ridge splitter videos. I’m looking into getting one. Say hello to Hunter and keep the dogs inside
Have you checked out Wolf Ridge channel?
@@jasone9 I have! Matter of fact Chris’s last video he posted pretty much sold me on his splitters. Good ol’ American story!
Is there a reason you aren't using the debarker?
Seems like the butt end from 12:00 to 12:05 could be useful for something like cutting boards if there are "craftspeople" in the area. May not be worth the effort to hunt them up on Craigslist or wherever though.
Mike do you but the waste pieces up for fire wood?
you guys are lucky to be able to afford all this new equipment to play with and a good size propriety i am in Florida with only 11.55 acres of land so i got to put every thing that got any lumber on my mill even if i get only one 4x4 x8' also my tractor to get the wood out of the forest is a lawn tractor but i made myself what i call my log carrier the biggest log i put on it was a 16 feet 8 inches long 20 inches at the big end and 16 at the small end got some nice 2x10 out of it but even at the mill i got no equipment to move the log i do every thing by hand and i am also 65 years old and got into a bad car crash and hand up with 15 affected vertebrate my saw mill is a small wood land 21 inches is the widest that i can cut i am not complaining here i am just saying you should try to do things with almost nothing { no fancy equipment }
also by the way you try a slab for a round table the best way i found for those is to let your stump dry for around 6 month out of the weather then cut your slabs and put those in a dark area totally out of weather and stack with weight on top for another year it does help on some of cracking
👍 from the Netherlands 🇳🇱
Mike, my guess for 2021 - The Morgans are going to go full time into the Outdoors, Mike retires from the oil and gas fields, Melissa goes full time with crafts, dogs, Hunter, and Ty on her channel, and life will be grand. Build out the new barn, host good family gatherings and awesome fireworks shows, and bring all of the subscribers more of the best things in life on Outdoors With the Morgans!
You forgot the pool for Melissa!
OMG yes, if you are going full time Morgans and don't want to sleep in the mini cabin.
William Kunkle Oh yeah, I forgot about the water feature. It’s gonna be Hunter’s pool anyway. Go Hunter!
I think you hit the nail on the head with your prediction. Mike I'm glad you decided to mill some of those white oaks. They make beautiful wood. Have a day!!
Mike’s too young to retire.
Would you use any 6x6 or 4x6 oak beams in finishing out your rec. building? Not really for support but mostly just for the look.
Much stronger than pine but have to predrill much more. Oak is much harder to nail and saw. I would build with oak if it was available.
I like your new video today you did a really good jop today look nice
Should take that same size log and cut it like you cut the pine 🌲 and do a test to see how the heartwood drys in the Stack of wood. Stack it with your other lumber mark it so you know what it is just to see how the heartwood reacts when dried in the stacked up. THANKS
If you need timbers the small hardwood logs are great. Soft wood, it's up to you, t's better than junking them.
Nice oak boards ,you can use them for a fireplace mantle decoration!
Carrying that log out of the woods a little on the high side for the conditions?
My dad was wondering what you do with the slabs from your mill? I know years ago we used to use them for fire wood, just wondered if you do the same thing.
Good morning Mike, I have a small woodworking shop I wish we were closer together I would like to buy wood from you. Small amounts. The wood you're sawing is beautiful. Have a great new year
I have a Mobile Dimension circular sawmill and I’ll saw anything that I can get a 6” wide board. I can’t get the price you get for firewood here and I get all I need from the slabs.
You got twins grandkids coming
Did you get the electric trench finished
He said they did in one of the last couple of videos.
You mentioned Melissa’s music source (not referring to the clue) and wanted to let you know I always appreciated the authentic music you & Nate use in your earlier vids. Happy New Year, friend!
It can be worth it to mill even firewood sized rounds if it is the right wood type and has some good limb placement on it as you can sell it to people that need smaller sized chunks of wood like a knife maker or someone making jewellery boxes. You have other wood workers out there that don't need huge slabs large enough to make a table like a person making a walnut gun stock cares more about how the wood looks and if they can get one or two out of it then how it would look as a table.
Hello Mike !!!!! When are going to put that other saw together that you have ????? What type of scraper do you use to scape the saw dust off of the logs ???
instead of burning the slabs with the bark on them: could you use a large wood chipper to make mulch???? Is there be a market for wood mulch?
Funny you are working on this white oak, I have 3 we just took down next to our house and I’m wondering what they should be used for? I have 2 12” and 1 14”...
Nice grain. Do you put antifreeze in your cooling liquid?
Windshield Washer Fluid
Great video Mike 🇺🇲 I really enjoyed this video 🇺🇲💯
What ever happened to the other sawmill you got in the crate? Did you have to send it back?
Nope, I have it, as soon as time allows
Goodmorning,God Bless
I noticed didn't use your de-barker when cutting the White Oak! You have done this before, I believe. Any reason or did you just get in a hurry?
My question to you, isn't smaller logs like the one in your video best for tooling. From what little I've learned most handles for hammers and axes shovels and etc desire wood from younger growth vrs old growth? Please comment if you belive differently. Thanks.
With the center of the oak logs, why not save them and use them for posts, beams, or mantles? They would be great for furniture.
Crack and split very bad
There was a shot of you driving by in the tractor and your grand sons toy excavator was in the foreground.
How about getting some oak 2" flooring out of those little logs?
one of the best uses
Yes, I saw that toy excavator. 🙂
Good morning Morgan's.
New things coming... I am taking a guess that there is going to be content regarding the Bronco!?!
I've owned several chain saws. Even with brand new chains, they didn't cut nearly as fast as what you are showing in your opening sequence.
how come the demonstrations cut so very fast?
That’s a stihl 500i, very fast
Mike, can you use the hardwood slabs for your Bundle wood?
I see merch being added soon. 😀
Lyle and I vote that Kubota will get you an excavator! You will need one to dig out the pool!
Is it time for someone to send Mike a loggers tape measure? Can u guess at how much fire wood u would have got out of it
I think you're either getting a firewood processor for a eastonmade splitter
like to see that winch on the back, when "grappling"?
Foe Me since I do not sell or use fire wood, any log with at least a 6" at the small end becomes lumber. That is what I did when I had my mills in New York. But here I had 2 wood stoves and would also cut about 5 or 6 cords to heat the two story place
How much firewood is left on the slabs after you cut that log on the sawmill.
You’re looking for gold none in that log. 🙏😃👍
Mike just remember no such thing as retired, it's just tired. You'll find you'll be busier than ever with things you love doing around the property.
Could you show the sawmill after you have covered it?
I'm ready to watch and enjoy whatever is coming to the Morgan's in 2021. 👍
where your tool rack for the back of the tractor to haul wood with
On the numbering for the video number just drop the "#" and add a number, no comma (that is 9999). That will take you on the road another 3-4 years.
We think Ty's excavator is a clue. Maybe Kubota will give you one to use.
Clues? I saw one and heard one! The mini excavator at the intro and a new grandbaby.
Selamat pagi morgan
Hi Mike What is the name of the tool you use to turn the logs over on the mill?
Cant hook
"I'll use it for somethin" lol, as we watch you and wonder what does he do with all this lumber?
Stickers
That engine sounded like my old Honda Goldwing.
You finally gonna set up the other sawmill, or someone is getting a wood drying kiln
i like the kiln idea
