For me, it's some of both. I only wear clothes because it would shock other people if I didn't. 😊 I wear dark colors for serious occasions, light, happy colors for family get togethers, and generally I wear what's appropriate. So, yes, I wear what I think will please other people, to a point. But if they want to take away my pink, heaven help them!

Who is looking at what people wear. On the street, most people are in a world of their own, on a phone why would they be interested in who wears what . Some may see you for a second. Where whatever you want and be confident in your choices.

You said Gosh no! I am still wearing it at nearly 69 and love it.

Depending on your personal style, I don't see a denim jacket as an age thing. If your style has changed and you no longer have as casual a style, then I can see it, but if your style is still natural and casual, I don't think it can look wrong.

Sage advice Kay. As I have aged (retired), I have noticed how little anyone cares what I wear. It doesn't matter much in any real way so it is a great time to wear what truly suits you, including items like bows, ruffles, and bold prints.

I just asked myself that yesterday. I had bought a pair of Levi wide leg jeans a year ago and questioned myself if I was too old to wear them. I just turned 66 in May. So, I ironed them, yes, I like to iron, always have. I don’t care much for steamers, they stress me out, lol! Anyway, at the last minute I ironed a back up pair of jeans. After my shower I put them on with a plain Banana Republic Factory V neck t-shirt and their white sneakers. I did my minimal make up, my hair and added a small pearl and gold chain necklace, small pearl earrings and small pearl and gold bracelets. I rocked that look. My other jeans are waiting for me to wear today and I’m questioning if I should wear them with a tank top or button down shirt. I actually braved it this week and wore a tank top for the first time in years out in public. I was not only proud of myself but also felt good in it.

I’m not too old to wear anything, I’m 64. I’m happy about my figure and I have good legs, even the skin, thanks to my two Grandma’s “great legs DNA” and me keeping my weight to a healthy one, 125 lbs. I wear short skirts/dresses or shorts almost every day, why not? I’m not too crazy about my wrinkled arms, it’s from aging-related collagen loss, not “lack of toning/exercise” and genes, some women get this more than others, or earlier or later than others. But, that doesn’t stop me from wearing sleeveless tops when I need or want to. We can’t help aging, so why should we feel ashamed? Men don’t!

I have a dress I wore to a niece's wedding in 2012 which fits me again and looks really cute and is a small dotted print which also seems modern. It is sleeveless...and I am going to wear it to a friend's daughter's wedding anyway, regardless of the upper arm swing. I have embraced those as part of my heritage and remember lovingly my Mom's upper arms that looked like that. I may lift a weight now and again, but feel no compulsion to do so for this occasion. Yes, love who you are unconditionally, as you do others.

At age 70, I have no time to waste on anything that doesn't make me happy. I have tanned slim legs and love wearing shorts. But the A-line mid length blue denim shorts that I loved so much 5 years ago that I got them also in white, just didn't look right this year. Whether my body has changed or the fabric got tired, doesn't matter: they went in the clothes bank. As will the butter yellow denim shorts that are just a tad too short 🤷‍♀️

Great video Kay. This is the dilemma I’m facing as I will be 70 on Wednesday. I began de-cluttering the clothes in my wardrobe about 9 mths ago as I just wasn’t feeling like the styles I’d been wearing for the past 10 years suited me anymore. No more animal prints or florals. I have some new shirts and jumpers with stripes, but I’m mostly comfortable in solid colours. However… when I see photos of myself in these new clothes, I don’t recognise myself anymore. I’m happy feeling comfortable in my new wardrobe of clothes and ( reluctantly) my older body, so I guess I’m just fitting into a new and different season of my life. Thanks for the thought provoking content and encouragement . I love your new hairstyle. With love from Sheron in Toowoomba. Queensland, Australia. ❤️🌻

I think this is my favorite of all your videos. I just turned 58 and aging can be hard as our bodies change. Menopause has been brutal on me and I just don’t feel like myself so what I wear plays a big part in how I feel about myself. I have other health issues so comfort is a big deal, but sometimes I feel like I have to sacrifice fashionable for comfort. Thank you for your gracious wisdom. I think this will be a game changer for me. If I like it, and I feel good in it, and it’s current then I don’t have to worry what others think of me in it. And vice versa, if I don’t feel good in it, then I don’t have to wear it and be ok with that.

I do avoid a lot of those little-girlish details like ruffles, flounces, puffed shoulders, Peter Pan collars, etc. I need sophisticated clothing and I love classic tailored items in 100% natural fibers and materials, and in feminine, mostly light, neutrals and colors. I like classic prints, too, like dots, stripes, checks and tartan and a few very carefully selected floral/foliage prints. I avoid shopping at those mature brands, the use a lot of old-ladyish styles like big long shirts and cardigans, tunic tops, skinny jeans and 3/4-sleeves. The too-bright colors and novelty prints aren’t modern and the prints and accessories are scaled for much bigger women, I’m petite and slender. I do buy the occasional item at Talbot’s, usually basics, so long as they’re not so long as to be unflattering (not every item comes in Petite, unfortunately). I always show my waist by tucking in all my tops or wearing waist-length ones. Those long tops hanging down to the thighs are the most aging thing ever, especially in florals. Don’t hide or tent your female shape, show it, it’s beautiful at any age or weight!

This was a great video! I agree with everything you said! I’m petite and 73. I love wearing ruffles and bows and different shades of pink but I have to say feminine tends to be one of my style preferences. I really think it’s more about one’s body shape and style preferences than age. For example I have very unattractive knees and so I stay away from short skirts and shorts because of that. Thank you for your research!💕

Kay, We’ve been away on vacation and I’m just catching up on your video episodes. The words of advice and insight you’ve given here should be published in a booklet! I was taking in every word you spoke, nodding my head or shouting “Yes!” Years ago, a friend and fellow seamstress talked me in to having my “colors” done which was one of the smartest investments in myself I’ve made since earning my Masters in 1980! Not only did this professional Colorist provide me with my “Season” she spent 3 hours with me and I also learned what my “Style Aesthetic” was. These two keys have saved me thousands of dollars both retail shopping for ready-to-wear clothes and in purchasing fabrics for sewing my wardrobe pieces. Not everyone sews, I get that. (I make a small living sewing for those that don’t.) But, my point is, if you take the time to invest in having your colors done and pinpointing where your style aesthetic lies, you will be forever pleased with the choices you make. If you see a jumpsuit in a big, bold floral print on a tiny, petite young woman, and you are a “soft summer” with a “classic romantic” aesthetic, then go shopping for a floral jumpsuit in your color palette! I can’t wear bold, bright colors - they drown out my skin tone - so I search other sources to find the item I want in the colors I know will compliment my skin tone! Kay, you are so knowledgeable in ways to help us build a cohesive, workable wardrobe! Your advice and is so welcoming and appreciated! Sensational episode! ❤ P.S. Thank you, too, for the City Beauty link and coupon offer!

Thank you for this informative video. What looks “appropriate” often depends on body shape and physical characteristics not age. I have seen younger and older women in clothing that is too tight causing straining seams, lumps/bumps/cellulite, cameltoe, muffin top, or fat rolls to take center stage. Sometimes it’s the opposite and the focus becomes whether women will actually be swallowed whole by her clothes. Some women might be showcasing wrinkled knees, batwings, or pooch with certain clothing choices. Having said that, fashion trends often are unflattering even on the models and fashionistas trying to wield influence. Don’t be a blind follower! **If your goal is to look stylish in your clothes, simply wear whatever you like that fits properly and showcases your best features. **If you could not care less about style, clothes, how others perceive you, wear whatever you like and forget the other considerations. It’s a free country!

Child of the 70's, psychedelic/hippie fashion, cut offs and halter tops, all worn with hiking boots or just barefoot, all were my "fashion style"...Long straight hair and granny glasses, too. I morphed into classic white Ts, docker type bottoms, fitted, sleek styles. That said, if budget allowed and a more varied life style came along, I'd wear some of those psychedelic styles with a clear conscience. I still wear two piece swimsuits along with one piece styles...whatever suits the, ahem, more "mature" bust line...well, and maybe the earth mother jelly rolls at my waist. No matter what garments adorn my body, I seek most to communicate smiles and confidence to God's Glory and ignore the naysayers. Thank you for this well thought out video.

I am so grateful you introduced me to City Beauty Sculpting cream. The results have been amazing when I pair it with a little castor oil. I just ordered their cream for crepey skin. I have high hopes for that! I may try their lip glosses now.

Great video! Pretty much the way I think, but this helped solidify my thoughts. I say, "go with your gut!" I will also wear a "questionable" item for the day, and see how I feel at the end of the day. Usually this works, and makes it easier for me to pass it on, or put it back in my closet. ❤

Wonderful advice! I have a blouse (expensive) that I have had for years - I've put it in the box for goodwill - I've taken it back! ha Now I'm really going to give it away. It is not "me" anymore and I know it.

    Kay,
This video was just excellent. You brought up so many good points. As I was listening I was thinking this has nothing to do with age but what our unique style is that we want to present.
I think younger girls/women ask the same thing but replace with the words too old with does this suit my style?
I appreciate your videos so much because unlike others you make me think much differently about how I dress. 💄👠👛💕

As a woman of a certain age, I wear pretty much what I want. However, I do modify my choices. For example, I do wear leather (faux) pants, but I do not wear the skin tight versions. Now, if you are very petite and this suits you, have at it. I want to stay current, but I am not trying to look like my younger self. Personally speaking, my younger self may have looked better, but I am honestly much more comfortable in my body and like the person I have become.

Kay another great video and advice. I never thought about growing out of my wardrobe in that way. Also need advice on hanging on to my things in case they come back in style. So I think I need to ask myself if they do come back in style, have I outgrown that style. Food for thought.

In my experience, if something comes back in style it’s usually a little different and I end up wanting a new one rather than the old one I’ve kept all those years. So I don’t keep things for that reason. I only keep things I consider to be true classics. But I think that is very much an individual decision. Thanks for watching and sharing. 🥰

I have rethought my wardrobe starting in January 2024. Keeping clothing I really do not like: give to thrift shop. Same with clothes that are not comfortable or looks right (seam is twisted or shoulders too wide - I a petite). Gave away so someone else may enjoy.
Discovered I had too many tops! It is work cause you have to try on each piece & decide if you really will wear it & like wearing. It's June still working at it. With fewer clothes it's easier to take care of & manage my clothing.

While I agree that age should not be a factor, I don't like seeing a 70 year old woman with bad varicose veins in shorts. It's one thing to wear that at home or private event, but I think we should always dress to highlight our best features and I don't wear anything that shows off my worst ones. There is a way to dress stylishly and attractively but it may mean there are things I just can't wear anymore.

I think the gingham jumpsuit is gorgeous on you, but long. What I think it is, is that everything must have a dignity and elegance about it. That doesn't mean not romantic, not sensual, not alluring in the right setting. Possibly the opposite, but it does mean flattering your body, your silhouette. Sleek, flowing, tailored, absolutely always in a flattering colour even if you have to repeat it. Repeat necklines that flatter you. Darts in the right place, or buy a mens shirt and add the darts. A woman in a caftan and head scarf can be the most alluring thing ever, even though much of her is covered. There are still wrists, ankles, necks and queenly posture
