  • What is protein C and S deficiency? Protein C and S are two anticoagulation proteins that inactivate coagulation factors Va and VIIIa in the coagulation cascade. This means they act like brakes on coagulation, limiting clot formation and preventing clots from growing too big. So when either of these proteins is deficient, it leads to a hypercoagulable state, meaning a person is at increased risk of developing a clot that could block blood flow.

I have protein S deficiency. My very first episode was in 2009. I was pregnant at the time. They assumed pregnancy triggered my clot but more testing revealed my deficiency. I’ve been on blood thinners ever since. It’s depressing at times. I’ve been on 3 different blood thinners. I’m currently on Xarelto.

Wow months ago I had clots throughout my lungs and in my heart. I had to have open heart surgery. I just got tested and found out that I lack the protein s so this explains it.

What were your first symptoms? What made you even go to the doctor for them to find the clots?
