A Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief

“A Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief" (originally titled "The Stranger and His Friend") is a seven-stanza poem written in 1826 by James Montgomery. The words of the poem have since been adopted as a Christian hymn.

THE STRANGER AND HIS FRIEND
“Ye have done it unto me." - Matt. xxv. 40.
A POOR wayfaring Man of grief
Hath often cross'd me on my way,
Who sued so humbly for relief,
That I could never answer "Nay:"
I had not power to ask his name,
Whither he went, or whence he came,
Yet was there something in his eye
That won my love, I knew not why.
Once, when my scanty meal was spread,
He enter'd ;-not a word he spake;-Just perishing for want of bread;
I gave him all; he bless'd it, brake,
And ate,-but gave me part again;
Mine was an Angel's portion then,
For while I fed with eager haste,
That crust was manna to my taste.I spied him, where a fountain burst
Clear from the rock; his strength was gone;
The heedless water mock'd his thirst,
He heard it, saw it hurrying on:I ran to raise the sufferer up;
Thrice from the stream he drain'd my cup,
Dipt, and return'd it running o'er ;
I drank, and never thirsted more.
‘T was night; the floods were out; it blew
A winter hurricane aloof;I heard his voice abroad, and flew
To bid him welcome to my roof;
I warm'd, I clothed, I cheer'd my guest,
Laid him on my own couch to rest;
Then made the hearth my bed, and seem'dIn
Eden's garden while I dream'd.
Stript, wounded, beaten, nigh to death,
I found him by the highway-side:I roused his pulse, brought back his breath,
Revived his spirit, and supplied
Wine, oil, refreshment; he was heal'd;-I had myself a wound conceal'd;
But from that hour forgot the smart,
And Peace bound up my broken heart.In prison I saw him next, condemn'd
To meet a traitor's doom at morn;
The tide of lying tongues I stemm'd,
And honor'd him 'midst shame and scorn:
My friendship's utmost zeal to try,
He ask'd if I for him would die;
The flesh was weak, my blood ran chill,
But the free spirit cried, "I will."
Then in a moment to my view
The Stranger darted from disguise;
The tokens in his hands I knew,
My Saviour stood before mine eyes:
He spake; and my poor name He named;
“Of me thou hast not been ashamed:
These deeds shall thy memorial be;
Fear not, thou didst them unto Me."

Your choice of naming your podcast accurately describes what your viewers see. As one who thanks God everyday that I have been given the land that my husband currently live on, I can see your gratitude for what you carefully maintain and enjoy.
Thank you Catherine! Life is like a garden, we have to deal with all kinds of issue, therefore some rather have just a piece of lawn, but what gardening can bring us is amazing! I wish I can write poems, compose music, or paint, but now see how God bless me through my hands! Our garden is a poem, a music and a painting, our land is like a music sheet or a canvas, waiting for us to tell beautiful stories. So nice to have garden friends in Jesus🙏😊😊💖
Most tours are boring so i go on but this one is just perfect , no talking, doesn't spend too much time on one item
Oh yah, you don’t want to listen to my English for sure 😃. Thank you again Barbara❤️

I Love this Garden. When the rains came I was in worship and awe, I could sit in that space without an umbrella and just be amazed

I like how you started displaying some of the names of the plants in your garden. Especially appreciate the common names. I was wondering on your last video if the yellow flowers were primroses, but forgot to ask, so that was very helpful. I have a few pink primroses that were started by throwing some seeds out in the garden last year but forgot about them till they came up this year. I will have to get my hands on some yellow ones as they are beautiful! Every time I see your rock wall I wonder if your bear will show up, as he loves walking that trail 😂 can’t wait to see part 2
There was a momma bear in my town got put down by the police just 2 weeks ago, she went into someone’s kitchen through the screen door while her cubs were waiting outside, she left the house without harming anyone, but the resident report it and insisted to take action… it broke my heart, I lost sleep that night. Ever since, I spot no bear nearby, I miss them.
I started the primrose just a few plants, and look at how much I have now! Believe me, I gave a lot away too over the years. One of my friends complained that they are aggressive, then a few years later when she return visit my garden, she immediately regret that she pulled them all out!😢 anyway, I’ll love to have some pink one too, I wish we are close to each other so we can exchange😀😃
Thank you again Mary, for supporting my channel, I’ll try my best even though I am no expert of plants, but thank God for He is helping me to learn. By the way, I love the word “walkabout” you gave me, thank you so much!
So sad to hear about the momma bear 😢 sorry they couldn’t intervene and relocate momma and her cubs to an area conducive for them. Not sure how that works. I will have to revisit your videos to see her wander your property to honor her. She sure was beautiful.

That frog at 0.38 is that a bull frog?? Very pretty Garden!
It’s quite large but I doubt it’s bull frog…
But I guess it is American bull frog😮
Amazing garden! Are you in the Pacific Northwest? Such a beautiful area.
If it is a bullfrog indeed, it will eat all other beneficial frogs in your pond. You might want to get a specialist to confirm and maybe relocate it.
@@user-gr7bz9iw2k Hi there, they come and go, big ones and small ones, I pretty much just let them do their things, but I’ll do some research for the sake of doing good and right, thank you! By the way, I am located in New England, state of Connecticut, garden zone 5b-6a.
Whats the silver foliage beside yellow flowers?
Good morning Sheila! That’s is artemisia, I am so glad you spot them. They create some sort of dreamy feelings, are wonderful as fillers, both in ground and in bouquet. Thank you and have a wonderful day!
Your garden is magnificent!
I take a lot of inspiration from it. ❤️❤️❤️
From, Châteauguay, Québec 😊
