Also, episode 2 will make you gasp when you find out Tanya's backstory.
Mages are actually rare, and in some countries, guaranteed service no matter their age. Her being allowed military service is both due to her country being a "meritocracy", but also the rare amount of mages in her country.
There will be a LOT of references to early 1900s and WW1 events in this series(while not "Earth", the world they're in has parallels to ours). Example: pillboxes in early WW1 were really considered "coffins" because of the expanded use of artillery and trench warfare. It's a fixed position, vulnerable to artillery.

Edit: And yeah.... she sent them there because she knew there was a high chance that they would die (Don't forget she wanted to send them home to begin with, but then they questioned her orders a 2nd time and after that they got sent on her recommendation to the pillbox, she wanted them dead for going against her a 2nd time)
Added fluff from the LN: Kirst and Harold were ridiculously reckless and often got other members of the platoon injured because of their unwanted gung-ho bravado and consistently ignoring Tanya's orders. they wrongly thought what they were doing was 'heroic' and simply could not (refused to) see the harm they were causing the rest of the platoon that suddenly had to make up the gap they left in their post or having to very quickly change tactics because of their stupidity
They also said that they want victory or death. So she sent them to a pillbox to either somehow win a victory from a pillbox, or uselessly die there. Quite poetic actually.

But their constant lack of discipline decided that enough was enough and sent them as per their wish, to win or die
I'm pretty sure that in the novel she had no idea they would be shelled, and expressly sent them to the rear because that's where they would be furthest from her (she's on the frontlines).
Tiny Tanya can get more power out of her equipment since she weighs less, is a smaller target also. Tanya is a more powerful mage as well which helps her fly faster and higher. That smirk of Tanya sold me on this anime, right behind Overlord. Fun fact: the authors of Overlord and Tanya are friends. Episodes two and three will go into Tanya's back story, look out for after credit scenes.
I always loved the idea of using a gun as a wand, it's the logical step of magic mixing with technology once this era rolls around.
I do wonder if mages used bows during this worlds medieval era

The sound and scenery production value in this anime is amazing IMO -- the whole thing is a lot of fun :D

The neck-worn jewel-type things are their Computational Devices, which allow mages of this world to use magic and fly, as well as turn normal bullets into tac-nukes.
Note: when the subtitles talk about altitude they say meters but it should be feet.
I don't think that is the case , why would they use feet? Metric is the standard.
@@omega9216 Well the light novels states it as feet, and there is long argumentation about the problems attached with mages fighting so high up. Also look at what is depicted by the animations - it is clearly meant as around 10000 feet rather than 10000 meters.. There is quite a difference.

Tanya, together with Ainz, Kasuma and the guy from Re-Zero is part of the Isekai Quartet series.
If you've never heard of this one..... trust me, you want to watch it.
But only after having watched all of the shows contributing to it, which also includes Shield Hero later on.

Sooo, I'm going to be that slightly annoying history buff. Trenches are great, if you're infantry you want to be in a trench or a bunker network, being in a open field or even a civilian building usually sucks comparatively.
Sadly especially in WW1 everyone knew this, and everyone knew just how defensible trenches were (which isn't really a new concept either even the Romans used trenches) but everyone's "brilliant counter" to trenches, even the famed tanks that France and Britain developed, failed outright or was countered.
Saga of Tanya the evil is "not Germany" in the 1920's which would be after WW1 and between that and WW2, so the tech, and magic, may be developed enough to not get as stuck in Trench Warfare (even WW2 got bogged down in it at a few places)
As for the tank itself since this is post WW1, honestly I'd be interested in imagining what it's development would have been like without WW1, since it was expensive to develop but a lot of people did have a grand landship idea, or the smaller French Tanket ideas firmly in mind even before WW1 the war was just their excuse to get/steal funding for their projects, and of course the name was a deception to make the enemy think fuel tanks or water tanks were being moved from point A to point B.
I dont wanna bring in current world events, but it seems trench war fare is still a thing (looking at the Russian invasion into Ukraine)

the title is actually a mistranslation from the title of the light novel, its chronicles of a war maiden or something like that, yujo senki,, not any of this evil stuff.
