  • Mary Elizabeth Braddon (4 October 1835 - 4 February 1915) was a renowned English novelist of the Victorian era, celebrated for her sensational works. Her most famous creation, "Lady Audley's Secret," published in 1862, achieved both literary acclaim and multiple adaptations on stage and screen.
Born in Soho, London, Braddon received a private education. Her parents, Henry and Fanny, separated when she was just five years old due to her father's infidelity. At the age of ten, her brother Edward Braddon departed for India and later became the Premier of Tasmania. To support herself and her mother, Mary worked as an actress for three years, befriending Clara and Adelaide Biddle during this period. Although they had minor roles, acting provided her with a means of livelihood until her growing interest in writing novels led her away from the stage.
In April 1861, Mary met John Maxwell (1824-1895), a publisher of periodicals, and moved in with him. However, Maxwell was already married to Mary Ann Crowley and had five children with her. While Mary and Maxwell lived together as a couple, Crowley resided with her family. In 1864, Maxwell attempted to legitimize their relationship by publicly claiming they were married, but this was refuted by Richard Brinsley Knowles, Mary's brother-in-law, who revealed that Maxwell's true wife was still alive. Mary acted as a stepmother to Maxwell's children until 1874 when Maxwell's wife passed away, and they were finally able to marry at St. Bride's Church in Fleet Street. Together, they had six children: Gerald, Fanny, Francis, William, Winifred Rosalie, and Edward Herry Harrington.

Absolutely thrilled! I would never buy books (or anything else) from Amazon because of their 'ethics', for years now but subsequent to listening to your problems with them, have just checked with my local go-to-online book shop. YES! 'Further Ghost Stories' can be purchased from Fishpond here in New Zealand. Thrilling news!

I really enjoyed this one! I do love a vampire story! Your rendition of Dracula was brilliant too. I just got back from visiting Whitby ( not for the first time) found myself in a lovely bookshop with an entire bookcase full of different copies of Dracula 😄
Whitby was nice but HEAVING! Bit too busy for my liking. Your experience with Amazon sounds awful, thank goodness for that silver lining. I've never had an account with them..never will.
Your Ghost Story / Haunted House idea sounds really good. Unfortunately I'm broke. Sales have really dipped, I guess we're all struggling..but very good to be able to listen to your stories on here , many thanks 🙏

Great writer , I love Mary Braddon. Her own life story reads like one of her own novels. She was never married unusually for a victorian.young lady, she "lived in sin" with Maxwell with whom she had 6 children, & she went from being his protegeé to becoming his live in mistress & mother to his own children, after his poor wife Mary Anne Crowley was locked up in a Dublin mental asylum.
The Cold Embrace is another of her very good ghost stories.
She wrote prolifically and many of her stories appear in supernatural ,& Horror compilations.
Lady Audleys secret is a great story of mystery & murder ..but she wrote many good novels She should be much more respected & lauded in my opinion.

So glad to hear the update after the Amazon debacle. My husband and I are cancelling our prime membership and some other plans to start our disentanglement from them. My son is also planning to do the same. I calculated we've been spending $500 a year (US) just for the audible, Kindle and prime. That's not counting the physical product we've ordered. I'm hopeful this will save us a bundle. Thanks for sharing your experience with them.

Often, I will track back to not lose pertinent details but I didn't have to do that with this, at all. Sure, I missed some details, but always knew setting, time, character, and plot progress without needing to try so it made me laugh when Tony started his commentary mentioning how easy the story is to narrate.

Hey Tony, sorry…nothing to do with vampires at all, but just wondering if you’ve ever heard of a book called Uneasy Freehold by Dorothy McArdle, written in 1942.
I just found out that one of my favourite films was based on this book: The Uninvited, 1944 with Ray Milland & Gail Russell. The film is not streaming anywhere in my area and I am unable to find its source book either. If you know the film, I’m hoping that the book is better, as they usually are. I am willing to listen to it audibly, read it on Kindle or even on paper. If
you know of it, I would appreciate a lead or maybe even a read on Classic Ghost Stories? …for that’s exactly what it is. The film anyway, has impressed me for years.
Thanks so much for your great reads.

i was mad! they were so unjust and arbitrary and factually wrong if anyone with any human intelligence or empathy had looked into it they would realise they’d misunderstood the situation but they had no inclination to be decent

    Wonderful. Quite enjoyed the
“modern” medical nature of the vampire and how it was done- still a vampire in my opinion, still a witch and a demon.

I agree. A modern vampire or at least a victorian one

Oh I loved this Tony, thank you. It was really good actually to have a happy ending. It was really beautifully written and lovely to listen to. Vampire type stories can be a bit predictable but this had a unique little spark about it.
I do agree that Rebecca is a truly excellent novel.

I've been too busy lately to be a constant listener---but I loved listening to this one tonight! I've never read it before and thoroughly enjoyed both the writing and your characterizations. Thank you so much for all you do. How delightful a twist for one of these selections to have a somewhat pleasant ending. Best wishes for a good October ahead!

I would think it would be good to tell ghost stories in a castle. If you are going to do it please post on your RUclips channel. Thank you.

Just started listening to your podcast and you do a great job. Also like listening to you talk at the end just as much as your storytelling. Also you have an amazing voice for this.
