Thanks Kevin : This talk with two unique people epitomizes all I feel & believe. My first canoe was the pointy end of an old wooden punt. From there I progressed to lawn sale economy. No I have the best canoe in the woods. It is people such as these who have propelled me. Thanks for prompting such golden memories. Stay Safe Brian 79
This is absolutely my favorite " Whisky Fireside Chat" thank you Kevin for continuing with all the videos you have been putting out I am enjoying all of them. Again, thank you.
I really enjoyed your fireside chat, I’m a new Canoeist just two years now your videos have been a big help. Keep up the good work cheers from Colorado.
While I agree that "educating yourself" can help reduce the danger of wilderness canoeing I often encounter city people who seem to think that taking a one week course at the YMCA is equivalent to a Master's Degree. And it ain't! Years ago I gave a talk at a sea kayaking symposium in NYC entitled, "Sea Kayaking: Levels of the Game." Before beginning my talk I conducted an informal survey of the audience. It went something like this: Raise your hand if you have an undergraduate college degree (about 80% did). Raise your hand if you have a Masters Degree (about 20% did). Raise your hand if you have a Doctorate, or are working on one ( about 10/15% did). I followed the questionnaire by saying, "I am here today representing the University of The Sea where every test you take is pass or fail and where the first mistake you make can wind up killing you! There are no make up exams allowed!" You could hear a pin drop in the silence that followed. The sad truth is that that while public educators teach us that "learning through our mistakes" is okay nature is a far less forgiving taskmaster. Thus it pays to underestimate one's skill level and proceed with humility and caution. Much as folks seem to feel that they can buy skill by taking a class or buying "pro level" outdoor gear it ain't necessarily so.
