There's something really special about Nathan's exhibition programs, so much freedom and energy. There's nothing precious - every movement feels natural and direct, as if he were completely improvising. It's such a rare quality to have. I don't think the world fully grasps how unique his talent is.
Nathan has such a relaxed casualness to his skating that it creates this very natural and organic-looking style. It's part of the Nathan swag. He never looks rehearsed like traditional skaters do, more like he just hopped on the ice and, as you said, is improvising. Even when he's skating a competition program, he exudes that same type of feeling.

Sometimes I wonder why Nathan haters don't see the artistry in this guy. Like I know he's quad king and all but hey, he's just playing the game to the max of his ability. In the age of Hanyu if he wants to win consistently (and who doesn't?) he needs to trade a bit of complexity/sophistication in his routine (relative to the insane standard set by Yuzu) to conserve energy and stamina for the high BV jumps. And it's not like he has been resting on his laurels just winning with his jumps! He has improved A LOT on the presentation side over the last two seasons post Olympics. I speak as a big fan of Yuzu by the way. We can have our favourites without demeaning or discrediting other competitors (a legendary one by any measure, by the way).
Wish more people would think like you. It's insecurity. They think acknowledging Nathan's artistry will somehow lessen Yuzuru. He's not a theatrical skater. He doesn't over-exaggerate his expressions and emotions...and I don't believe one has to use that artificial style in order to be considered artistic. What Nathan has is _so_ natural and organic, and looks more like genuine feelings from within. It's natural enough that it often looks like he's improvising his skating. I think that's very, very special. I'm glad the judges can see what the haters won't acknowledge.
@@divinearia1601 Naysayers are critical of Nathan's artistry, saying it's plain at best and boring most of the time. But they don't know the music he skates to can't be overdone. For example Philip Glass. For example, Mozart he has for this new season. These composers set emotion boundaries in their works. You don't want overkill. My piano teachers always gave me warnings that don't play Mozart like Beethoven or even worse, Chopin. When people are scathing about Nathan's artistic styles and compare him to other theatrical skaters, they simply show their ignorance of the music he skates to.
