The sound of the patio cushions is definitely my favorite. I'd be curious to hear what other materials in the same spots would do... Drop-Ceiling tiles instead of the 'professional panels' over the windows... All the nerd stuff. I've been known to make a guitar amp closet from couch cushions. Any ear food is worth a taste :)
I think using the non treatment sound as a snare overdub to either blend or switch from one to another would be really cool and great in a mix. Just a thought I had.

These are great ideas and tools to use. I do like the untreated room a little better. Nice work.
Science only verifies and states what's happening in the room with and without treatment, but our ears decide what we hear and like. As you mention, we experiment till our ears are happy with the sound we are hearing and use science to verify "why". As always, thanks.
The whole drum mix sounds awesome, but that snare is incredible! What is it? I clocked one of the tracks in Studio One was Q Drums... is it a Q Drum Co snare?

good sound achieved with some character that is really nice. opened up my eyes how you can get by with what you've got.
I use cheap patio chair cushions in my kick drums. Keeps the full body and bass of drum while eliminating the basketball sound
I've expanded upon the PVC and heavy duty moving blanket vocal booth idea to make a portable, temporary drum booth.
With a little forethought, most of the major pieces can be used for both [just not at the same time].
I even have a "window".
Who knew that all of those blanket forts I made for my kids would have other benefits?
I found one, literally ONE instance when ORTF doesn't work... ORTF has quite a bit more focus on the center of the kit, due to distance. So if you have a super loud snare drum, like a Tama Bell Brass, the snare will be like 10db too loud in the OHs.... other that that, ORTF is the jam! I use a Wilkinson audio clip to hold the mics so that they're set in perfect ORTF configuration. The clip was like $26.
Interesting! So you can just compress the overheads to take care of the loud snare transient?
@@creativesoundlab Sort of... you have to use Waves L2 to limit the overheads first. L2 has a weird side effect of destroying drum transients, which is why most people use L1 on drums if they need to limit something. But if your snare is hilariously too loud in your overheads, L2 does a great job of smacking it down, so you can then use compression after the limiter, and you'll actually be compressing the kit and not just the snare transient.

Absolutely brilliant video! But I have to say, this was a recording that to my ears did not need compression. It sounded so natural and wonderful already because of your great recording, controlled playing, well tuned drums and THAT ROOM.. just wow!
This sound reminds me of the drum sound from Stone Temple Pilots “Core” album. Very big!

interesting to hear how big of an effect one gets with that little of acoustic alterations to the room. Of course it's great to have such a great (high, wide) room! I wish I could use my living room as well (it's quite large, and high) but I have to deal with the (ex-)workshop instead (just 8ft high instead of the 7 yards the living room has)
The decay time of the fully dampened room fits that tempo perfectly. It almost has a gated quality to it. Of course, for a faster or slower song something else might sound better. Nice work!

Why not just embrace the reverb full on in there, which is inevitable in a tall room, it is great and unique. stick some room mics way up further away, skip the silly and subtle “treatment” experimentation.
