    @IanHunedoara8 Okay, to answer your question about was it a marked/carrying a "Red Cross" flag, it was not.
    Because the Wilhelm Gustloff had been fitted with anti-aircraft guns (3 105 mm AA guns, 8 20mm AA batteries) it was not marked as a hospital ship, no notification of it operating in a hospital capacity had been given and, as it was transporting both combat troops as well as civilians, it did not have any protection as a hospital ship under international accords.

    to be honest it was a huge loss of life not everyone on there were Nazis there were kids onboard who died not everyone on there was a war criminal there were so many innocent lives lost so tragic especially what these people had to go through

    What? Another example- Cunard liner Athenia- 100% civilian 100% noncombatant - sunk in full daylight by U-boat in the FIRST week of the war. U-boat commander was honored by Adm. Raeder and whole incident spun by German press. This set the whole tone for the naval war .

    i love ur video and appreciate the work that made this available to us. I do have a suggestion. Instead of having no people aboard, or even instead of having people aboard - my suggestion is to make a little flame and copy/paste it around the main decks of the vessel 9,500 times to signify the lives that ended from tragedy.

    The Gustloff DON'T sink in stormy weather. The Night of the 30th January 1945 was a ice-cold night, with snow and NOT storm and thunders. Right, the Gustloff was hit by three Torpedo. Okay sure, this diskussion is pointless. Sorry, but so much people copied ideas....

    @MrRuski96 Nazi didn't sink Lusitania, but it was german imperial navy / army did it, when it was WW1 and at that time too Hitler still became a german troop so nazi didn't exist until 1920's or after the WW1 while this tragedy took near the end of german reich / Nazi german

  • @theguyfromhell2
    @theguyfromhell2 14 лет назад

    ok so the lusitania sank in 18 minutes from 1 torpedo and a second explosion on the ship but this was hit by 3 torpedos so shouldn't it sin faster than the lusitania

    Nobody in any of the vids about Gustloff tragedy could answer my questions: was the Gustloff carrying a Red Cross flag? Was it illuminated? Was there a heavy fog and mist so Cap't Marinescu could only see a large silhouette? Was Marinescu a "war criminal" or was he a victim of circumstances like the cap't of the USS Vincennes in shooting down IranAirbus in 1988?

    Ah, no, its not a load of crap, its documented fact. Obviously you know nothing about its history, which isn't surprising, as its one of the most overlooked maritime disaster of the 20th century, with the highest deathtoll of any sinking in over 200 years.
    Everyone remembers the Titanic, the Lusitania and others, but ask them if they know of/have the Wilhelm Gustloff and they give you a confused look.

    It would sound kinda funny for Germans to harp on rules of war after at least 1,500,000 Russian POW's died of starvation, disease and mass killings between 1941 and 1945.

      I am well aware this happened in the course of a gruesome war. But how can anyone be proud of an attack that killed over 9000 people, mostly women and children. Over 9000 human beings! Souls! Loved ones!

    • @vlad34791
      @vlad34791 7 лет назад

      RandomVidGuy, Well, this ship was propagandized by nazis as a symbol of their supremacy. I think the captain of soviet S-13 submarine thought there were nazi officials and officers evacuating (actually, there really were some of them). He couldn't know that there is a lot of innocent people there (he wasn't specially hunting this ship, he just run into it during raid), especially considering she wasn't officially a hospital ship (there was no red cross and she was painted as a usual military ship). And fact that this ship was a symbol of regime that killed millions of soviet people might also play a role.
      Виталий Лагутенко, You also are not right. I don't think that we should be proud for this attack. Of course, I don't blame Marinesco, he did what he should to do, but to be proud of attack that killed thousands of innocent people is just cruel.

      eengelo In a ship disaster it is a huge amount. (true, overall, not many people died, but this disaster should be more recognised) Pretty much everyone on this ship had the intent of getting away from the nazis meaning most of them were probably innocent.

    • @eengelo
      @eengelo 9 лет назад +1

      Doctor Psycho Killer
      thats true

    • @gorgeanderson350
      @gorgeanderson350 8 лет назад

      +eengelo Yes that was a victory, but the fact that they were fighting for the enemy dose not make them murderers and killers, or belittle the value of their lives. Besides, a significant number of the military personnel on board were reserve troops and conscripts; no-one chooses to be drafted.....
      Such is the price of war
