    What is sciatica? Learn the anatomy of the sciatic nerve, and common nerve flossing exercises for sciatic nerve pain relief. The nerve gliding exercises performed in this video are taken from common physical therapy exercises for sciatica, piriformis syndrome, and lumbar radiculopathies. These physical therapy nerve glides for sciatica are modified to be accessible during common yoga poses, and suggestions are made on how to modify a yoga practice to irritate the sciatic nerve less, and aid in nerve mobility. In this way it is possible to practice yoga for sciatica and sciatic pain relief. Motion is lotion! Yoga for sciatica...
    .
    .
    Common yoga poses like paschimottanasana, downward facing dog, and uttanasana can all be modified to either be nerve tensioners, which could lead to or increase sciatic nerve pain, or they can be altered to become sciatic nerve flossing exercises to aid in nerve mobility for sciatic pain relief.

    me being an amateur in this stuff, I wonder, why tensing the nerves is bad?And what should we be doing about our nerves to keep them healthy?Or maybe it's not bad if it's done lightly at first (like stretching, you don't wanna overdo it at first), but as you progress and become more flexible then maybe nerve tensing through yoga poses is not so bad?

    • @ShapeshiftWellness
      @ShapeshiftWellness  Год назад +1

      Nerves stretch any time you stretch. However, certain positions are more likely to specifically target the nerves rather than the muscles. Nerves that are already sensitive can be easily irritated with nerve stretching. A normal healthy person can do light nerve stretching just fine. Basically, just don't force it.

    Is nerve flossing safe/beneficial to do even if one does not have an injury and/or prescription to officially justify the practice?
    I recently watched a video by Livinleggings titled "Ignoring this will wreck your flexibility" where the use of gentle sciatic nerve flossing was recommended as a flexibility development tool.
    I was formulating plans to start opening my daily stretching sessions with that and possibly implementing median nerve flosses into my drawing routines even though I do not have a carpal tunnel syndrome diagnosis. Would I be wasting my time and/or doing harm with such habits?

    • @ShapeshiftWellness
      @ShapeshiftWellness  9 месяцев назад +1

      It’s absolutely fine to do, but not doing it will not “wreck” your flexibility. Beyond that, flexibility doesn’t positively benefit our health, compared with alternatives like cardio and strength training, so if you’re worried about wasting your time… stretching is a waste of time in general for general health. Again, cardio and strength are much more important.

Bent over while standing like I always do. But this time when I straighten out after tying my shoes . I could barely stand up straight the whole day i literally was walking like a elderly person. Not anymore it's gotten alot better but now I'm having pain in calf right behind my left knee . Do you recommend this video for me or do you have a video I can use for relief. Thanks

    Can sciatic nerve be so short on e person that that person never can be able to bend forward and "touch the floor" with the hands? I can stretch the muscles, but all my life have I gotten pain in that nerve if trying to touch floor or grabbing the feet in those positions you show. Just on one side at a time. This feels strange, may flossing really help, since I have had this problem since childhood, never being able to "touch floor" even though I went to youth gymnastics.

    I've been dealing with lower back pain and sciatica for many years until... this morning. Yesterday I found this presentation. It all made perfect sense to me - and I realized I was an accomplice in my own misery. Last night I tried nerve flossing as you instructed. This morning I woke up with the same pain - miserable. I cleaned up the kitchen - still messy from yesterday's Thanksgiving dinner. I bent over to load the dishwasher and, upon standing up straight, the pain was gone! All day now - no pain. I am so happy to be free! I can walk without having to stop and bend over every 5 minutes! Thank you thank you thank you! I can't thank you enough!

I have Sciatica problem but not the pain. Instead I have numbness in my feet (mainly left foot). Is there any difference in treatment ? but as nerves cannot be stretched, how exactly is this of benefit , bar maybe a fairly minor inch or two gained from the loosened nerve? Are some people just permanently constricted by the length of their nerves? Tbh this is what makes most sense to me. Can anyone explain why this is otherwise? Even if the nerve comes to glide effortlessly in its sheath due to flossing, its length remains a permanent limitation on forward folding

    • @ShapeshiftWellness

      It's not about lengthening the nerve, it's about allowing mobility of the nerve back and forth from the surrounding tissues.

    I have had sciatica for 6 years now and neither piriformus or discs are the cause. Can these exercises help if it has to do with scar tissue? Or can it come from knee or feet? Mine starts at the butt and travels all the way down to foot. 😕

      You’re welcome! Just to be clear, this is just one of many possible contributing factors to sciatica. A comprehensive solution really is the only solution, which is why I made a masterclass teaching a holistic perspective on sciatica and low back pain: www.shapeshiftwellness.com/LBP-masterclass

    This video was quite helpful. I have been suffering from sciatica past 4 years now. I got MRI done, but the report was normal. As per the report I didn't have slipped disc or L3 or L4 and nor any nerve compression. But I have experienced massive pain. It did gt better in 4-5 months. Still the problem persists. The pain travels all the way to my right foot and I have a trouble doing forward bends. When I do gym the next day in morning my back is completely stiff and I feel pain.
    I would really like to know more about how to treat sciatica and what all exercise can be done and shouldn't be done. That'll be great help.

    I dont have any problems while doing the stretch poses that puts tension on the nerve,like you showed in the video to see if the patient had any irritation 3:17. However, usually i have numbness and pain throughout the pathway of the nerve in anytime of the day. Like sometimes it happens when i just wake up,i cant lift&move my leg and move my feet cuz it hurts and tingles. Or this happens while im sitting. I kinda get paralyzed for a minute,then it goes away and I'm back to normal again. I think this started to happen every now and then ,maybe a year ago? I dont remember if i had this issue two years ago but if i did,it was less frequent. This year,it got more frequent and i dont know if thats because of my workout routine or stretch routine,or sth more serious god forbid

    Such a Wonderful video to help with visualization. Everybody can learn a ton from this video.
    I have a question ❓about neck pain after Thyroid Surgery. Could the neck pain be related to the Sciatic Nerve?
    I was doing yoga when I was in my 20-s, but slowly and indeed, I stopped practicing yoga due to a fibromyalgia diagnosis after the second total thyroid removal surgery in 2002. I wonder why, after my first thyroid surgery in 1989, the back of my neck started hurting when I turned my head. Back then, there was no physical therapy after surgery in Bulgaria, which is a shame, or maybe it was not as popular as it is now.
    I was prescribed "Iontophoresis" as a treatment modality in Bulgaria, and it never occurred to me to discuss this pain with a yoga teacher. That would probably be much more beneficial.
    Years later, when I was living in the US, I discovered that my neck does not curve like the letter "C," and that's the reason for my neck pain. But I still don't entirely agree with this diagnosis.
    Could you please make a video on what can be causing pain in the neck and who is most likely to suffer from it? How many possible reasons are there for neck pain?
    Especially because now, when I am in my 50-s, I wake up with pain in the base of my skull almost daily, and I dread going to bed because of that. This kind of pain in the neck radiates to the top of my head. I am tired of taking NSAIDs and CBD for that kind of pain/headaches all over my 💀Also, I wonder if it has anything to do with the extensive dental work performed in 2022 when I had to crown my teeth on top and bottom; not that I didn't have those headaches before. I have always had headaches, but not 2-3 days a week or more.
    Where does the Sciatic Nerve go from the neck up? Inside of your brain? Is it connected with the Trigeminal Nerve or the Vagus Nerve?
    I don't think it is normal to have neck pain when you are in your 20-s or even 40-s. So what is your take on that?
    Thank You!
