About 25 years ago, I played a round with a guy who carried a 5-iron, a sand wedge, & a putter. We walked 18 in the heat of a late-July afternoon in SC. He shot 74 😮…and he was 68 years old!!
Hey, I'm 65 (but def not a low handicap). Anyway I went crazy the other day, playing a very difficult 60 yard pitch with the 7-iron. Bunted it up there to like 5 feet and made the putt. Crazy game. Going to try the one club thing this season.
This is how i learned in highschool, Coach would only allow us an iron and putter. My senior year i only carried a; 5w, 5i, 7i, PW, and putter. I had a handicap of two. Life is easy when you limit your choices.
Big Dawg Matt. Thank you for the knowledge. I have been watching your videos since this past weekend. My goal is to break 110 this weekend and get close to 100 before the season ends. Your videos are appreciated!
My favorite round last year was a 1 club challenge I played with my friends the day after thanksgiving. Used a 4 hybrid the whole round and learned a ton but also played way better then I expected. Love this video!
I had commented on your other video about my iron only round and at 2:15 you describe how it was for me. There was NO way I was getting close to green in 2 with my irons so I just looked for better landing positions and pretty much just thought "ehhh go that way-ish' and swung with the easy and fluidity that I have in all my practice swings...it was a blast!
Matt… TY for the vids. My game at 58yrs old has improved to a point where I was able to shoot low 90’s with ZERO knowledge of course management. I now have shot in the high 70’s by just playing hole back. You are the MAN bro!!!! My game just keeps getting better.
Long time lurker, first time commenter. I did this today. 9 holes with just my 7 and a putter. Not only fun but I learned a lot. I shot 4 more than my best score on this course. Not sure what that says, but it was super stress-free.
A lot of people don't know what goes on with irons with a 3/4 swing, 1/2, and 1/4 swing. It frees you up to have 3 times the number of clubs essentially. Also, dispersion goes down with the shorter swings. I'm not a long hitter but getting on greens is pretty guaranteed. My high school coach had us play rounds with 5i on down. This is when I learned to work out all of these shots. Some guys had some outstanding rounds doing this.
I'm up for the Bazzuza challenge and taking the playa plan to the local 72 par grass patch mens slope/ rating 120/67.9. white box 5807yds divide by my reloable 175yd 5i = 33.2 shots + optimistic 2.5 putts , = 78.2 shot round. 26.7 shots below my usual slaughter house day. I'll ignore the golf bud hackling , and post my results later
My son and I try to play at least one 18 hole round each year with only a 7 iron. And that includes putting. We call it a "Tin Cup" round for obvious reasons and we have a trophy that we pass back and forth as necessary. He's the current holder. He has an advantage of length on me with a 7 iron. 170 or so to 120 or so. But we keep it close and have a lot of fun with it.
99 yards and a pitch ain’t one. Golden. Also going to commit going forward to only using a seven iron for flop shots when short sided. It just feels right.
i just found your channel. i live in Thailand. I am a starting off golfer. I really liike you approach: very relaxed and not a lot of mumbo-jumbo talk. It's very straight forward and nonchalant. Love it. Do you give lessons?! I am in TH
Please do a whole-round video again like you used to. With the graphics on screen for hole/score/ etc. I know it's probably a bunch of work but those are awesome to watch too.
One day The 18 hole course vlog is pretty dead though since the influx of the agency-run american channels geared toward personality of the trust fund kids Lots and lots of work for little return in form of views so there will be fewer
You're not a high handicap whisperer, Matt, you're THE high handicap whisperer! You're a new man after visiting the home of golf & are sharing your epiphany with us. :)
When I was a junior golfer the head pro would have us go play with just a driver a 7 iron and a putter. It really forces you to learn to play golf not just to hit the ball.
The playa…shot a 92 today after a front 9 of 49…thanks to the man himself probably should’ve listened to him on the front 9 and shot something in the 80s
I love dropping random Gold Sidekick knowledge on the course and getting the "wtf" feedback, but then have to listen about how they are still trying to break 90 after 8 years of golf.
I drive my dad and brother nuts with it man. They’re salty because I haven’t pulled a driver out in weeks. But they don’t understand that hybrid+hybrid+wedge onto the green is just as good as their driver+3W+chip onto the green lol
Everyone should play a round with a half-set. It takes so much guessing out of club selection and forces you to make the most of the clubs in your bag.
Ah, that's funny. I did exactly this with 7 Iron on my régular compact 9 hole score my average level. Hopefully was à windy Day so it might have actually helped!
What could be really entertaining, is joining like a semi serious tournament (mid-low hcp) with just two clubs, and finishing even 😂. I swear I'll buy me a LGBM polo if that happens.
@@bluejay1121 just generally keeping them in line, making sure we make some birdies so they can eat for the day and share some food with their families

So what you're telling me is that Golf Sidekick is a time traveler?
Best place to learn golf is from a single figure 65+ year old

A friend of mine's older brother, 3w, 9i and putter. Same deal old guy playing scratch golf.

Talking about Seve Ballesteros and showing José Maria Olazábal... 🤣 Although great flop shot with a 7iron. 👍 Excellent video, as usual. 😎

Boom. Add a fairway Wood and 50° wedge

I would love to try this but concerned about holding up pace of play because I will be taking more shots down the fairway. How do I avoid that?
