That meshes with what I learned 1960-61 in required scripture classes at a Catholic college: the Jews were more monolatrous than monotheistic. They understood the commandment against "strange gods" to mean not "These gods don't exist" but only "Don't worship them!"

Such a polished lecturer! She knows the material, unlike so many who stand there and read off the page for the whole lecture.

Soccer mom says "Take a cookie" then dives into polytheism on one leg. You don't see someone like this every day. Wow.

52:55- “ How do you feel about ancient monotheists being polytheists?” - I feel very comfortable.

What?! A greedy bishop defrauding a private citizen of his property, and being threatened with legal action?! I’m shocked. My universe is shattered - it’s a good thing we don’t have people like that in the Greek Orthodox Church...our hierarchs are always so morally upright, so altruistic, so completely disinterested in material things, so full of charity and love for the poor - especially here in Toronto.

Just because you make a donation to some temple does not mean you believe in the gods of that culture. You can be doing it for very earthly reasons of your own.

Interesting...she is confirming what I was beginning to conclude, that Yaweh is a demiurge, and is not the Father of Jesus. The Father is much higher and supreme light, and all good.

The words of the Apostle Paul apply here - Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom: but we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumbling block, and unto the Greeks foolishness; but unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men. (1 Cor. 20:20-25).

Excellent lecture, beautifully delivered. But Augustine was about as anti-Jewish as they came. Christianity is a Roman imperial religion (i.e. Hellenistic with a thin veneer of Judaic messianism). Augustine’s brand of Christianity was thoroughly Roman - which is to say, implicitly anti-Jewish. Any effort to revise the original narrative is merely a rhetorical exercise.

Wrong. Christianity is Judaism completed. It’s a Jewish religion-a messiah was prophesied and fulfilled in Yeshua. All the disciples who spread the word to gentiles were Jewish. Christianity is the completions of Judaism therefore, it is Judaism.

Yet you do not practice the law which God said was eternal psalm 119:89. You believe the holy spirit is superior to the father and son, because you can't blaspheme against it, while you can to the other gods, Matt 12:32. You believe the son was subordinate to the father john 14:28. You believe in the atonement of sins through human sacrifice. You believe another person can pay for your sins, when God said the contrary deuteronomy 24:16. You believe the messiah is God, when it never said that in the tanakh, in fact it says he will fear the lord, isaiah 11:3. So God fears himself? You believe a man was God when God said he wasn't a man numbers 23:19. Your false messiah fulfilled non of the messianic prophecies, especially failing in the most important ones like world peace isaiah 11:6, 2:4. He failed at returning the lords chosen people back to their lands permanently, amos 9:15. The temple wasn't rebuilt as stated in ezekiel chapters 40-48. He never sacrifed for his own sin ezekiel 45:22, because you believe he was sinless.

@@sadvenom7826 - There’s a good reason I don’t practice The Law of G-D (or believe in any of the other things you mention). I’m an atheist - worse kind, too: a Greek atheist.

Yep, he pulled himself together and left the woman he loved for a 'higher good.' Dr. Fredriksen explains celibacy in the ancient world. See Stephen Greenblatt, "St. Augustine and the Invention of Sex," published in the print edition of the June 19, 2017, issue of The New Yorker, with the headline “The Invention of Sex.”

Not true.. if you have read Augustines work, you would know that as time went on he had a fundamentally different understanding about the Jews as he progressed in his research and knowledge about the Catholic-Jewish relationship.

    • @westonmickey3890

His understanding and opinion progressed over time.. he did not die hating Jews and fundamentally changed.. this academic scholar did an excellent job explaining and maybe you should have actually taken the time to watch this.
