FUN FACT: The Rio Olympics logo represents the union between the nations shaping the "Pão de Açúcar" (Sugarloaf mountain), and the colors of the Brazilian flag as well.
Great analysis on the logo design. Beijing 2008 logo is actually the shape of ancient Chinese seal or a printing stamp, which is similar to a signature in Ancient China. The human figure is derived from the Chinese character ”京”, (pronounce jing) abbrev. for Beijing. The stamp logo is like a commitment by China to the whole world. Also it symbolizes the posture of athlete runner finished racing line. It tells you significance of the culture.

I'm brazilian and I remember when I first saw the Rio logo I was certain that it was inspired by the amazing french artist Henri Matisse's painting "The dance", which is pretty awesome
The logo is also great. It's round like a medal, it's gold, it has kissing lips because city of love, it is very clean. I have no understanding at all for the hate. And lilke you pointed out the typo is amazing. If you want to see ugly logos look at Los angeles and atlanta again.
I never realized it until this video but of you look at the RIO logo, the characters form the letters "R-I-O" with the dot for the "i" being the head of the center figure.
I think the Tokyo design was meant to look like a winner's wreath with a cutout of a Sakura flower in the middle. Like most Japanese design, it's really quite subtle. My faves are Beijing and Athens! Very iconic.
Tokyo logo has nothing to do with Sakura. It represents different view points and people (the shapes). And the subtle part comes into place when you look at the paralympic logo. The shape is different but was made out of the same amount of small parts. Meaning we all have all kinds of different shapes but deep down we are the same.
@@MacCc91 ah my bad. I wrote this comment before looking at the Tokyo 2020 website. You've got the gist of what the emblem meant. There's more though, apparently the navy chequered pattern is a traditional Edo design. The sakura cutout must have been a happy accident! 😄
I liked the Sakura themed one (the one that was used in the bid). The JOC should have maintained it imo. Also, the torch’s were shaped in the form of a Sakura flower.

the one in Rio 2016 is the most beautiful, it is 3D, in addition to showing a very famous tourist spot around the world, the "sugar loaf" still shows the colors of the Brazilian flag
Another great aspect about Rio's logo, is that it is 3D. There were sculptures of it around the city at the time. The Idea was to create a symbol you could touch/feel
The London 2012 logo is meant to not only say “2012” in a weird graphic way, but be a weird geographical representation of the British Isles! Still weird but there’s slightly more meaning.
@@frederiklist4265 It is the jing character. Here's an excerpt from wiki: "The seal is inscribed with a stylised calligraphic rendition of the Chinese character 京 (jīng, meaning 'capital', from the name of the host city) in the form of a dancing figure."
I mostly agree with your judgement but if I were to choose, let's say, an adidas track suit with one of these logos, it would be, hands down, Atlanta 1996.
In art deco era graphics lips were often drawn in the style that Paris 2024 logo has. Also in 1920's, it was popular in (glamour style) women's make up fashion to apply lipstick in a way that cupid's bow made a sharp angle in the middle.
So good!! Can't wait to see these redesigns & love that you are involving us in the selection process! My question: How the heck do you have perfect vector files of each of them!?! 🙆♂️
Actually, if you look just right, the Rio logo simultaneously represents the shape of Pão-de-Açúcar, a famous and touristic spot in the city (two mountains side to side, one taller and thiner than the other), and it also spells the word RIO
The Sydney logo overall represents the flame while the top alone also depicts the opera house, the middle and bottom is showing a human figure in running motion, the middle on its own is also presenting the sun and two boomerangs forming the hand, and the bottom which is the leg or torch holder also paying homage to the boomerang and the wave similar to the top in the boomerang indicating the sea... just realizing this now when watching this video. very smart indeed and so so cool
I feel like the London one was always gonna be difficult to pull off because all the others have an obvious logo and the location and rings underneath whereas London tried to go different
I like the Rio ones when it’s 3D animated but i will give my Twixbar to the Beijing one , more impactful. Btw the character is also the calligraphy for Beijing if i remember it good
For me the London olympics were the best and the logo represents it well. It was the only olympics to truly have a great legacy and it was an electric games as the logo represents. The games went for an actual brand and it truly was outstanding. Even the mascots put sports first and truly excited the younger generation.
100% agree. Plus the only not egoistic logo. It’s not about Tower Bridge, not about Big Ben, not about the Queen, not about London. The logo is about 2012 - the year of the 30th modern Olympic Games when the athletes of the world came together. The emphasis is on togetherness in a certain time, not about one city, one tiny part of the world.
That's incorrect. The logo was crafted to represent the Olympic rings, the letter M, a running track and a podium. I believe its actually brilliant and probably one of the best Olympic logos.
Rio's logo not only represents the shape of the famous turistic attraction "Sugar Loaf Mountain", but it's also the first and unique 3D printable logo, like a sculpture, so you can really touch e feel it. During the games, they put giant sculptures of Rio logo everywhere around the city and olympic buildings. Everybody wanted to take a pic with it. It was a great sucess!!! Indeed one of the most creative and iconic logo of olympic history.
Considering that in Ancient Greece the Olympic Games winners were only awarded with a “crown” made of an olive tree branch I believe the Athens 2004 is the one that captures the essence of the Olympics. It may not be my favorite execution but it’s on point with the Olympic Games!
I love the new Tokyo logo! The blue and white checkered pattern was popular during the Edo era, with the empty space in the ring revealing a cherry blossom design. I think it’s so simple and clever, and very emblematic of Japanese culture, at least for those familiar with it.

You're very right about a lot of the Beijing 2008 logo and I still think it's quite nice. One detail I'd like to mention though is that the red shape around the silhouetted figure is not just a reference to calligraphy, but also traditional Chinese stamps!
hi, Zimri. As a Chinese, I can explain a little about the Beijing Olympic logo, the shape is a traditional seal,(ancient Chinese used),and inside the seal is a movement of an athlete, also the "Lishu' character of 京(jing), respect for Beijing(北京),and Chinese culture. AND last ,thanks thanks for your video.as a young designer I learn a loTlololot.
Tokyo’s shows all people of different shapes and sizes coming together to make one. So I mean.. it clearly has personality, just need to see the meaning behind it which can be difficult for some unable people.
@@bonehand87 ye all logos obviously have some kind of meaning but if it's not directly obvious to someone that just has a glance at it... it means it lacks personality...
I just want to say, as a Chinese, I'm so proud of the Beijing logo as it ties together traditional cultural elements, movement and modern design style so well! Red, seal carving, calligraphy, character "文" and a person with organic movement... God I love it!
It really is. The Shanghai World Expo logo was fantastic too. But the 2022 Olympics logo was really mediocre, I think China should stop making logos based on characters, it's too much.
The Rio Logo is the best because it captures the Olympic spirit. The London one I personally like because they went with a unique approach and it reminds me of a graffiti style. I think the 20 in (2012) also represents the Lo letters for London.
Bejing is iconic - I have always remembered that logo!! Interested to know more about the Tokyo logo, and completely agree w the empty fridge-ness of Paris 🌝🥴
I think the Paris Olympics logo is smart. It is supposed to be the Olympic Torch, and at the same time represent the Paris 1900 Summer Olympics being the first to allow women to participate. Color choice could've been different, and I also think the lips could be minimal
Since I'm greek I absolutely love the Athens 2004 one bc I feel it connects to the history and is a nice reminder of how the Olympics used to be (people would compete just for a crown made out of a olive tree and it also symbolizes peace to me since wars would stop during the time of Olympics so everyone could participate)
Agreed. The logo was a reminder of the Greek origins of the Olympics and the days before medals were invented when people got a wreath when they won. It represented the Games going home to the country that had invented them in the first place in ancient times.
I'm brazilian and I love the logo our country came up with but when I look at the Beijing one it just brings me peace. I really think both of them are up there but when asked to choose, I choose Beijing.
For the Tokyo 2020 one apparently the design of the blue and white pattern is called “ichimatsu moyo” and it was a popular design for fabrics in the Edo period. Of course it makes in the middle the shape of a Sakura blossom. I personally really like it it’s simple yet very Japanese.
Dude i really recommend you to check out the process behind the designing Rio 2016! The whole thing is just fascinating and I think it might be on youtube if you look it up! I dont understand the France one very well, i dont think that is a color that should be in the olympics and while i do appreciate the shout out to art deco (the font is Good) i wouldnt think the symbol there shows france nor olympic games.

i love the rio games i also love the font they used for it and the pictograms
This is very cool! I would love to see you reviewing FIFA's World Cup logos
Missed you a lot
Missed you too! Probably more : )
your "in motion" perspective is what made so many airline logos & liveries so dull and inexpressive. Good job man.
You should rank the sets of icons they make every Olympics for each sport/discipline
pictograms
*at least Paris' logo has some kind of personality to it unlike Tokyo's, Montreal's or even London's...*
I don’t know why they changed the original 24 Eiffel Tower design that was literally perfect
@@rnsw4572 ye I agree
London was just so gaudy. I hated it lol
What is the dot in the middle of the 2012 London logo
I guess it's supposed to be part of the last '2' but yeah it really just looks like a dot :/
Zimri my boi, do the same thing but with footbal world cups! Hope you'll see it! Peace my dude :)
Rio is the best design, I would like to see a version of it without gradients too.
A Baron is the title under an Earl or Count.
Oh snap Parcours - I want to be an Earl now : )
The Rio Logo is the best because it captures the Olympic spirit. The London one I personally like because they went with a unique approach and it reminds me of a graffiti style. I think the 20 in (2012) also represents the Lo letters for London.
I'm so excited!!! I really want to go to the games!!
My city Rio in the first place im so proud 😂💙
You know, I actually kind of like the Paris logo, it’s pretty fire.
Si like the meaning behind it
wait til you see the logo of SEA Games 2019 (Southeast Asian Games)
JBA Oh man. Lots of filipinos hated it
@@o___o8716 exactly
My fridge has fo sho been empty, so I'm leaving like. Thanks for the video, I had a blast :D
I absolutely love the Athens one, way more than the rest.
If I say I like curling, do I get a free Twix bar?
the rio one has so much symbolism, the colors are spot on, i'm crying by how good it is
Your overacting
There ir one more symbolism in Rio logo, the shape was designed to look like Pão de Açúcar, the second most popular seightseeing of the city.
Bejing is iconic - I have always remembered that logo!! Interested to know more about the Tokyo logo, and completely agree w the empty fridge-ness of Paris 🌝🥴
Please do a review of 30TH SEA GAMES PHILIPPINES 2019 logo and mascot because it became controversial
8:40 : "Next one is Tokyo 2020, which I guess is coming up this year.... "
OK What?, we are still in 2019 bro lol
Some of the games have actually started e.g. baseball
Olive tree is also the symbol of Athens from Greek mythology........
I'm brazilian and I love the logo our country came up with but when I look at the Beijing one it just brings me peace. I really think both of them are up there but when asked to choose, I choose Beijing.
Curling is the best ;P
Is the Athens one meant to also look like synchronised swimming?
For the Tokyo 2020 one apparently the design of the blue and white pattern is called “ichimatsu moyo” and it was a popular design for fabrics in the Edo period. Of course it makes in the middle the shape of a Sakura blossom. I personally really like it it’s simple yet very Japanese.
I love Paris 2024 logo, it's a flame but also a French girl
But it looks way too much like existing logos. Tinder, Shampoo products, etc.
I personally like the idea of tokyo 2020 logo. Both olympic and paralympic consist of same rectangle.
Rio is my favorite. I love the spacial perception it brings. And the font is also verry unique
