She and Arno went on the boat together. He brought a hammer. He hit her in the back of head with the hammer as hard as he could. It knocked her into the water. She was extremely disoriented from head trauma and breathed in some water before she began swimming. He was still in the boat, so she swam to the fountain and climbed up it to get away from him. He yelled at her that he'll be waiting on shore for her before rowing back to shore cause he got cold. She, petrified, stayed on the fountain. She wanted to hold out until morning, hoping someone would see her and save her from Arno. The hypothermia got to her first though, and she unfortunately didnt make it until morning. The head trauma was severe enough that even if she had survived, she likely would've been disabled or changed. He was attempting to kill her, but she got away and died awaiting rescue.

  • @nocturnalizzie
    @nocturnalizzie 5 месяцев назад +23

This definitely seems like a murder to me. The water would've been *super* cold and nobody, drunk or sober, is going to go swimming in frigid lake water wearing a coat and knee-high boots. I would guess that he maybe knocked her unconscious during that fight and brought her to the lake at that point. He then realized that her purse was still at his place, which is why he "found" it by the lake later and gave it to the police. He could've told his buddies to lie and say they met up with them at the bar; if they knew about the affair, he could've told them he had been with the other lady and didn't want the cops to know about it.
Whatever happened, I feel awful for Shirley and her family. I hope her sons get answers someday.

I don’t believe for a minute that she did that to herself. If you just got into a fight with your boyfriend about him stealing money to buy something for a different woman, you are going to be so pissed off there’s no way you would get in the car with him willingly, and then say that you want to go swimming in a lake at 2 AM and could you drop me off. What woman would want to go in a forested, dark area alone in the middle of the night?! And how would she have swam with her clothes AND knee-high boots on?!! And a coat too??!! She had enough experience with swimming to know how difficult it would be to swim with big heavy boots on your feet. How did she climb up into that tower in pitch black still wearing boots would now be slippery from the water? She was smarter than this. And the boyfriend checking himself into a mental hospital because he was supposedly so upset over her death is a very convenient way to make it seem like you are truly upset and a good alibi in case he would be brought to trial that he was too mentally ill to know what he did. Someone took her into that lake to die and it’s sad that everyone just brushed it off as an accidental death or suicide. I feel sorry for her son for believing that. He is either in denial or fearful of the person who did it. This was no accident. This was no suicide. This was murder.

Woman in this situation would be more likely to put him in the lake than herself. Can you imagine swimming in boots? Much less knee high boots. My niece did swim out in a lake to committ suicide, and she also wore boots all the time. She left her boots at the edge of the lake before swimming out. Her name is Cristy Campbell and her story was quite notorious in Illinois, Her own father committed suicide when she was 5 and her husband was very abusive to her, They had 7 children, and she shot her husband and burned the house down with him in it before driving into the lake with her baby in the back seat. She needed psychological help as a child, and the domestic violence included simply caused her to snap one day. She had been a great mother of all honor roll students, involved in sports and church attendance. It was such a shocking story- somehow none of the crimes were ever proven and the insurance covered both Crist and her husband Jay, as well as the car, and the house. All 7 children survived and are doing surprisingly well today.

I am 66 getting ready to turn 67.I have never heard of this story either. I seriously doubt though that she will be memorialized. Baltimore doesn't have that kind of money. You do one you better do them all. Start with the victims who have never received justice in Greenmount, then you have Pigtown, the unsolved in Hamden, the unsolved in Roland Park and I can go on. I imagine you would like BCPD to close down for 3 yrs so all these cases (the majority of which) are not going to be solved. You don't have a clue or are delusional.

Why would her boyfriend kill her when he had such a good meal ticket? Maybe they were both drunk out at the lake, got out of the car to walk & get fresh air to clear their heads, then got into another heated argument. Perhaps he struck her again, & she fell, hitting her head on a rock. Perhaps this killed her, or perhaps he was just afraid she was dead, so he took the body out to the fountain to hide it, causing her to drown. No way she'd go swimming in all those clothes! And there's no other person who would want to kill her, is there? 🤔

It's çlear to everybody that the facts of this case do not add up to reaching the conclusion this was not a homicide. They don't lead to any conclusion at all. A good litmus test for whether someone is worth listening to or not is if they are so arrogant that they view own personal hunches as a perfectly equal substitute for actual evidence. We don't know obviously but I think the evidence leans more toward foul play.

It seems most unlikely Shirley committed suicide in the fountain, and it seems just as unlikely her death was an accident. How the medical examiner could tell she possibly died of exposure after decomposing for 40 days seems beyond the forensics of the time, but the water in her lungs is significant. The hole in the back of her skull may have knocked her out, and she drowned after being thrown into the fountain. I also believe Arno's alibi is extremely suspicious, and it seems to be unsubstantiated.

Trust me, no one swims in that lake, much less fully clothed. This case is used as training for new Baltimore City police officers. Such a sad and strange case. Shirley wouldn't have gone swimming in a coat and boots, no matter what her state of mind or level of sobriety. Even if she had intended to unlive herself in the fountain (highly unlikely), she would have removed her coat and boots to swim there. Seems she had more cause to be angry at Arno than to be despondent about life in general. Arno's story is totally unbelievable, but what really happened? How could he have taken Shirley out in the lake to the fountain, unless maybe there were unsecured boats nearby? Or is there a significant current in the reservoir that could have carried her there, after Arno threw or pushed her in? It's unfortunate Arno wasn't charged, but I can see why. It is impossible to tell what exactly he did (reckless h*micide? second degree m*rder? first degree?). Any halfway competent defense attorney could argue reasonable doubt against any theory that a prosecutor could form.

I do not believe she killed herself. But I do think her son's explanation made sense. If Arno had killed her, how would he get her body to the fountain and why bother? Would have been easier to just push her off the edge - and would've looked more like an accident. I do think he may have lied about taking her home. Also, her purse could have been stolen. I lean toward accident while she was swimming. Maybe she had swam out to the fountain before, but not after drinking so much.

Does the NAACP describe itself as an "interracial organization"? 😂

Some of the founding members were Black, but most weren't. The idea to establish it came from two people who were not Black. Membership has never been limited to one ethnic group.

@@JJoy-bk8yr I'm aware the history of the orgs founding 😁. Plus, my people rarely ever ban others from joining our cause due to race. Thanks for the info though. I still find that description funny in combo with the orgs name 😂.

Afri-CAN, American… we’re not the only race who can sport Afro’s.. if you’re looking for a shortened word for African, it would be Afr-A, since the word Africa ends in an “A”.
It is known to us that Afro-American is another derogatory term as a way to pigeon hole us with racial stigma. Words to grow on 😉

I am sorry but I don’t know what else I should have called the newspaper because that is the name of the newspaper. It is called the Afro American Newspaper, I did not name the newspaper myself and I have to give credit where it is due if there is information that comes from a specific source. I list my sources in the description of my videos so if you want to check it out for yourself then you can. I would never be offensive in any way to any race of people, I can’t call the newspaper anything else because that is its name. As their own website states, “The AFRO knows what it’s like to endure challenging times. John H. Murphy, Sr., a former enslaved man founded the AFRO 130 years ago with $200 from his wife, Martha Howard Murphy. Together they created a platform to offer images and stories of hope to advance their community. The AFRO provides readers with good news about the Black community not otherwise found.” I hope that clears things up.

??? what are you on or smoking? Nobody anywhere uses the term 'Afr-A' outside of seemingly your personal delusions!?
NO, Afro-american is not a derogatory term its excepted as a legitimate term everywhere including the most searched information platform on the planet Wikipedia "African Americans, also known as Black Americans or Afro-Americans, are an ethnic group consisting of Americans with partial or total ancestry from any of the Black racial groups of Africa."! Additionally you do not have to 'get' what anyone is saying when the pure facts are the pure facts they do not change regardless of how you 'get' them or not, the founder of the publication and ex-slave called it the "Afro" as explained!... and guaranteed he understood more about the actual 'that history'!
