We are building a burnout machine! $800 78 AMC Gremlin!

- After having trouble competing in the Cleetus and Cars burnout competition circuit this year in our Malibu. We decided that we should just start over fresh and build a completely different setup. So Tosh found this 78 AMC Gremlin on Facebook Marketplace that was 3 hour drive from us. Usually I never drive this far to buy a project vehicle but we could not fine such a fine example of an automobile any closer to us so we just decided to do a 450 road trip to get it. We were looking for something very compact like a Pinto, Chevette, Pacer, or Gremlin. I think this is going to be a great platform to build a competitive burnout car off of. Now we just need to decide what engine and transmission we are going to put in it. Hope you like the video.

Thank you so much
Agreed
Agreed 💯
yep.
Hes going to be in a pickle when those two daughters grow up and go off to college then one day Ralfie leaves home too. Course he and the wife and the goats and critters will provide years of new content lol
Yep - An other road trip to a great find - Tosh pulls it off again - Ralphie and Squeezy have the best big sister ever - You can plainly see WaWa loves them dearly.
Thank you yes she did good
No doubt, she really looks out for the other two. My older sister was a pain! She still is!
I have an older brother like that, always had my back, and always cared for me. Wawa is awesome
Hi I'm Duane I watch your channel a lot I really admire the way you an your family work together an get things done you are bringing your children up the right way take care Duane.
The “expensive motor home’ is the video that got me hooked on the channel! And now I’ve seen every single video and never miss a new one 😀
Love this family!!! Thank you all for sharing your journey !!! I bought a new 1970 Hornet for $2000 , added AM radio for $60 !! 6 months later my wife and I went on our Honeymoon in it !! God bless you all !!!! Eddy
back in the early 80's I bought a black hornet wagon with a 304 in it. man that thing burn rubber for blocks. loved that car.
Always look forward to your videos! I have three daughters that are about the same ages as your kids I am raising alone here in TX, it is always fun for us to watch your videos together.
This one hit especially close to home, I live right down the road from the gremlin. Super cool knowing yall are the ones who picked it up!
Fantastic project! Consider the famous red/white/blue paint job of AMC racing back in the day. Gremlins were road raced & drag raced quite successfully. A SBC would be just fine in it but please consider a roll bar for your protection and chassis stiffening.
They weighed nothing and with the optional big 6 or 8 cyl. could haul you know what!
Just binge watched the last 5 months of your content, after my life fell apart in July I gave in on everything that I enjoyed to do but finally found myself again I think and gotten back into doing the things I love like watching you all do what you do best and I feel more like myself again
So good to see, always together as a family doing, something ... I reckon your kids will grow up to be amazing people. You are so blessed.
in 1971 while in the service we would do 90 to 180 days at sea and I built the Gremin X funny car for my girlfriends little brother. Great memory. Love watching ya'll have fun and work together.
Thank you so much
I'm going to start calling them "Bumper Lights" from now on.
Please don't encourage him.
Same 😂
I know!!!! Right?!!!!
That is going to be a fun project!
I think it would always be a good idea to check for other stuff on marketplace along the route before going on a long trip like that. There might be a lot of things worth checking out on the way.
All the best to all of you!
I had a friend years ago, that had one of these with a 350 in it, nothing fancy in the motor just a plain jane 350. He lit up that thing and she would take the tires right off her, and she was fast, also surprisingly stable on the road, cornered nice and tight. I am happy to see you get this, and I cannot wait to see what you do with it, and I think you mentioned purple for color, that would look great, super find for sure.

We had a gremlin growing up. I hated it but it worked the farm pretty well. We haul a calf in the back of it, and it pooped all over. We also hooked a fence gate up to it and dragged our garden area with us kids riding the gate having a blast. Great memories with a less than stellar vehicle.
I test drove a 70 Gremlin at the dealership back in 70. I was about 17 and this car was a 3 on the floor manual with a straight six engine and it had a fabric sliding sunroof like the old VWs did. I loved it but I couldn't talk my Dad into co-signing for me. So I was stuck driving my 64 VW Squareback for a while longer...which was a pretty cool car too.
Man yall came through my neck of the woods. South Georgia. Great content. I really like the family content and the fact that yall spend quality time. I have 4 girls and one just moved out. Time flys enjoy all them family trips because before you know it you will be one more short and before you know it they will all be gone off on there own
My family is from thomaston
South ga here as well Albany to be specific.
You should put an S&B cold air kit on your truck. I've had one for over a year now and it's great. From now on I'm calling them bumper lights instead of taillights.haha There's always that one child that stands out from the rest of the family. I know 'cause I was that one child.haha Love it. Your videos make me never fail to bring a smile to my face.
AMC also made a 'Levi's Edition' Gremlin, with the 'Levi's' on or near the stripe on the door side of the front fender panels, and had an interior trimmed in Levi's denim. a buddy had one with the 4 speed manual, and a 304.
The 4 cylinder model I had as a company car, loaded down with 300+ pounds of parts and tools, was always a paranoid experience getting on the interstate, at the top of a clear ramp, it would hit 55 mph about 1/8 mile after you cleared the ramp.😁
👍🇺🇸😎
My buddy's mother had a Levis Edition Gremlin in the 70's, we thought the denim interior was the coolest thing!
@@ve2vfd It not only looked good, it was durable, he'd not treated the car well for several years, then we gave it a thorough cleaning up, changed a couple of leaky gaskets, front end bushings, tie rod ends, shocks, new tires, the upholstery cleaned up like new, waxed and shiny, no leaks, drove like new, everything worked fine...and a month later he traded it in on a new Plymouth TC3 that later, right after the 2 year factory drive train warranty expired, dropped it's gearbox all over I-40. enter the Chrysler LeBaron saga.
I love all of your builds, but this one has special meaning to me because my family grew up with AMC's.
I bought a 1973 Gremlin X with Levi's interior when I came home from Vietnam. Loved it! All my buddies bought mussel cars, but that Gremlin was our Tijuana Taxi no one would steal it.
My dad had a 72 gremlin in high school he loved. Would blast Boston and drive the snot out of the smallblock 304 in it. He had loud exhaust and a cool blue with white stripe paintjobs
That’s great
304/360/401 are all the exact same block, AMC was cool like that. They called it a "mid-block" in the 70's because it was bigger than a Big 3 small block, but smaller than any of the Big 3's big blocks. 401 has forged internals (seriously!). The 304 & 360 had cast internals just like everyone else, but still tougher than Ford or Chrysler when you started abusing one (they're really hard to kick rods & cranks out of). You have to go out of your way to blow up an AMC, even a straight 6 is pretty goddamn hard to kill
I had a 70 some model pacer and that dang thing had a 360 3 speed you talk about a little car hard to hold it was a beast and my good friend had a gremlin with the exact same set up and my uncle had a amc rebel it had a 360 but it was automatic. I run the dog snot out of my pacer and it run like a top never did use any oil awesome car. Always like them AMC ✌✌🙃🇺🇲
@@jamesratliff9760 Yeah the 360 would run, especially the pre-74's with 10:1
that is one cool older amc, world needs more families like you.
Thank you
Holy smoke,,that is great shape cant wait to see more of this project
My first car was a 1975 Gremlin ... with the 258 inline v6 ... automatic ... loved that car ... super unique ... no one else had one ...
Awesome
Looks like everyday is a family adventure for you guys. An enjoyable thing to watch. We laugh so hard . We love you guys ❤👍
I can speak to the rough patches in the Interstate, you are lucky you did not fall in and come up missing. Glad you got you got to see Miss Liberty along I-459. Sweet Home Alabama.
Awesome choice. I would prefer the Gremlin over a Pinto or Chevette, because it will accommodate the V8 much easier. It's basically a Concord with the back end lopped off. It should make for a great burnout car. The back end should be pretty light. The Gremlin also needs to get a little more love. I believe it is an underappreciated car. I would definitely put a decent paint job on it. It wouldn't have to be perfect. Just to clean the outside up a bit.
My friend had one when I was growing up , her dad made a wooden key and drilled a hole in the roof and attached it to a wiper motor , it was pretty cool seeing that key look as it was unwinding as it drove down the road !!!
It blows my mind how interested and cool about projects your kids and wife are lol
I hope you all had a great Christmas! I think thats a great choice for the new burnout car. I knew an autoshop teacher in a local high school that dropped a 390 in one of those, and another in a AMC Pacer. Both were great! I really enjoyed Squeezy doing the "inventory" of the parts in that tote. She perfectly identified everything...lol Keep it up, you're all doing great!!! Have a wonderful New Year!
I’m keen to see what you do with the body work! Great project! Enjoy!
That is so cool! Y'all stopped at the exit by my house and I never knew..... The one with the 3 amigos tree service on the pole.... That is awesome
Hey Josh. You have a hybrid gremlin. You have a gremlin body and a amc pacer front end. The driver seat is also from a pacer. You can drop in a 305 or a 307 hog leg. Just watch your tunnel. The eight inch rear is weaker then you think. You can also swap front end parts hence front brakes and rear brakes from the mustang II series. Have a wonderful new year sir.
I don't think that's a pacer front.
Not a pacer front for sure.
Bill and Cole. The headlight buckets are pacer they are the only square on the pacer's. I think the grill is from a spirit or a later amc. I owned 3 gremlins over my life time. The were all round. But I agree the front end is not a gremlin
The seat that he hauled out of the car is out of a Dodge Daytona.
@@thebrokenbiker869 just looked at a bunch of pictures on Google. No pacer maybe spirit. He said square/round head light bezels referring to the bezel not the bulbs.
This is perfect I can't wait to see what you do with it. FYI my second vehicle was a 1977 Gremlin with a 272 straight six 3 on the floor it was pea green loaded with rust and I still want another one. I saw one at a drag stip with a 454 chevy and it did a wheel stand. May God bless you and all you do. Yours is my favorite show. Thank you.
I am thoroughly excited to see what you guys do with this. It looks like it could be a super cool and fun project!!!
Very cool. I have a 1974 factory 304 Gremlin X. Love it. That blue interior looks like the Levis option. You could reupholster the driver’s seat to match.
That would be a wicked burn out car . With a big V8 and a narrowed rear end .
Yes!!!
Add ford 9 rear
I was all set to see the Savoy, and got a gremlin instead. Its all good. These cars were highly popular for the light weight, and doing insane wheelies to half track!! Turbo 400 is the best bet, so you don't run out of gear. Rear end gear should be tall, 3.90-4.10:1 and a 2000-2300 Stall speed.
Savoy is next
I remember when those came out...
They were so hideous & different they appealed to some...
They were not top notch for dependability , but for the price, they were money well spent..
I bought a new AMC in 84 simply because was a car that was 4x4 .
It had a inline 6 & 4 speed . It got decent mpg & was great on snow...my job had me crossing the Cumberland gap twice a wk & in the winter , it got sketchy...
Good luck folks.
Had a used one of these as my first car! Guess that shows my age, mine had the “Flintstone” floors as well, nothing a little diamond plate won’t fix😉, heater core was an issue too, had to travel with a blanket in the winter. Manual steering, manual brakes, the front seat was a bench seat, if I remember correctly. Enjoy building this one!
It's cute and funny that the kids clap and yell woooo, because when my sister and I were on trips together when we were young and we did a very similar thing. We were both cheerleaders and we would sing while we clapped, Alright, Alright, Alright,
Decent, Decent, Decent, Wooo!!
Ha ha ha 😄🤗😊
You wanna supercharge… An AMC gremlin? OK when you were looking at the car I had a little vision of a color if you were ever going to paint it a translucent purple with orange bi-color car…. It’s beautiful that you’re gonna turn out hunk of junk and turn something that most people throw out into something cool. Thank you for taking us along on your builds!!
That would be cool.. I noticed there was a reply already it’s a scam
Great to see a gremlin burnout project! Would be awesome to build an amc v8 and set it up like your old maverick, that thing destroyed rubber.
We went from Independence Mo to Medford Or in 1979,3 guys and one German Shepherd, taking the Southern Route I40,had to go around a snow storm, in a 6 cyl Germlin, with 4 different types of tires half bald, had fun in that Germlin.
Wow!
I graduated high school when these came out and wanted one badly! A freind bought a Gremlin X when they first came out and it was fun. I had a pair of Javelins years ago and one was a 4 speed Mark Donahue with the high fiberglass hood and a 360 V8. Rare car.
Have fun and stay safe.
I had a 1974 AMC Gremlin and loved it. It had I believe a 304 V8 and would burn some serieous Rubber.
Awesome thanks
Enjoying your latest road trip. Josh, I too stiffen up after a few hours behind the wheel even in my Mercury or the Crown Vic wagons. My first car was a 1973 Ford Pinto Squire Wagon with the 2,000 CC engine and 3 - speed Automatic transmission. It was my commuter car when I was going to college. An absolutely gutless wonder but dependable. It seems I have always had station wagons until I bought the Grand Marquis last January. Go for a 401 AMC V8 if you can find one for your Gremlin.
My dad had a Gremlin X when I was wee child, I think it had a small block V8 or a straight 6 maybe, it was like a brown/gold with the black X markings. All I remember is my older brother lighting the tires up without issue...so this will be a good burnout car!!
Awesome
This adventure is gonna be a good one 👍 Wonder what you're gonna paint it what engine you're gonna put in it this is gonna be a good ride
Living in the barracks in 73 I didn't own a car, but I had 7 keys and access to 7 cars. One was a new V8 Gremlin only automatic car that chirped the tires in 2nd. Was a nice driving car on the Pacific Coast Highway.
Awesome thanks
Um abraço do amigo de vcs !!! Aqui do Brasil 🇧🇷👍 esse carro e semelhante ao nosso Chevrolet Chevette brasileiro !
Awesome thank you
@@Sleeperdude You speak Portuguese? Man of many talents!!
@@Profabdesigns sim ! - falo português !!! Língua oficial dos brasileiros 🇧🇷👍 !!!
Wow that brings back memories. My friend back home chopped off the back end, and made it a truck, very small truck!
But it was fun! He ran the heck out of that thing. He got it, for like a $100. bucks! I think new, they were around 3 thousand.
Can’t wait to see how this turns out! 😊
Awesome
That brought back memories, high school buddy of mine in 1977 had one with a big block Chevy in it...I remember it being squirrely!I hope you find a big block ford in this one 😎✌️
Love your choice. Bought a new 77 gremlin was 2995 with air. Took many long trips and kept for 10 years. Never ever could you drive it on ice and snow. 0 rear weight. Y’all will love it!
Ps my kids slept in the back on the folded down back seat. Much love
Dad had a 70 Hornet sportabout with a 304 posi rear end, he could never figure out why he was going through so many rear Casings. Our mechanic had the Rebel "Machine".
First year for Sportabout was 1971. 1970 was coupe and sedan only ;)
That back seat was done with purpose, the drop in the seat creates more leg room by forcing your knees up. It really wasn't uncomfortable either. Thanks for the video.
It’s really cool
glad to see squeezy has all the technical terms for the parts!!

Me and My Brother shoved off to the Florida Gulf to get my Dad's 88 Honda Magna. I bugged him to stop at Bucc-ee's on South Carolina. It was worth it, thank you for showing the awesome cleans experience. They Should Sponsor you. :)
That’s awesome I’m glad we could help
Being a burn out car it really just needs to have power. Any power train would be great. This is going to be a awesome project
Yes thank you
Great choice! Back in the day ,some AMC racing cars were painted red, white, and blue...it was VERY DISTINCTIVE! The front third of the car was red, middle third was white, rear third was blue. They looked awesome..paint her red white & blue...look it up, you'll fall in love with that paint scheme!
Can't wait to see what you all do with the Gremlin. Are ya going to patch it up and paint it? Manual or automatic transmission? Put a big engine in it!
Maybe paint it all the same color. Definitely big engine
I had a 78 Pacer and I loved it. It had overdrive pushbutton on the end of the shift lever. My 16 year old son wrecked it.
Another great video! A road trip to buy a Gremlin. Looks like a good choice to make a burn out car. I'm sure you'll find a good drive train for it. Thanks for another awesome family type of video; they're so appealing! From your fans in Wheatland, Wyoming...Candy & me at Thrif-T body & paint. Love y'all!
My first car was a Gremlin. Had a custom ordered 304 V8. That baby could fly. Had to keep the 21 gallon gas tank topped off otherwise she was a little light in the rear since all of the weight was whatever was in the tank.
I'm so excited to watch how this car progresses to be a burnout car! I never even knew "burnout competitions" were even a thing until I started following your channel, and wow, it looks like a LOT of fun!
My Uncle bought a Gremlin new in 1974 and drove it for 20 years down in Henry Co. Tennessee. It was sky blue with black stripes and had a 258 straight-six in it which was the same engine I had in my 78 CJ-5 and those engines were bulletproof. To save about 20% on parts, whenever I went to buy parts for my Jeep like plug wires or whatever I'd say it was for a Gremlin because if the box they came in had Jeep stamped on it the parts were about 20% more expensive even though it was the same engine, lol.
Another great video ! I always look forward to seeing your next one. Keep up the great work. Love your channel.
Thank you so much
These are great cars! I had one back in the seventies. Reliable, and a STRONG 6 cyl, 3 Spd manual. Fun to drive. I think they look particularly good now with slot wheels!
Feliz año nuevo 🙂🎉 y saludos desde CDMX de 🇲🇽🥶🥶 Hermosa esposa y familia 😍😍😍😍😘
Back seat is shaped the way it is to fit people back there. With the front seat in, there was literally no space between the back and front seat (1’ at best). So they tilted the passenger when seated to give them the perception of more space.
I vote for a Ford 302, 351, or 383 stroker with C4 if 302, or C-6 if 351 or 383. Maybe 2000 (up to 2500) stall converter. I still like the 9” rears. If it’s a burnout car, use 3.73 or 4.11 rear end gears.
I think the Ford engine mounts bolt right in.
I believe you made the right decision for the burn out car . another video well done . will be watching the build to the end y'all have a good time doing it .
Thank you so much
Neighbor kid had a Gremlin. It was a lot of fun driving through a store parking lot and squirting the windshield sprayer OVER the car onto unsuspecting pedestrians on a sunny day.
Always get excited when I see yall announce a new video on instagram!! Makes work a little more tolerable the rest of the day! Lol
Awesome !
I am so jealous of you Mr. Sleeperdude. My wife of 27 years left me for someone else. You have a wonderful wife and kids. My 5 kids are all grown up and living there lives. My so called friends have turned there backs on me so I am all alone and now homeless. I get such a warm family feeling watching your channel. Yours and VGG are my life blood. God bless all of you. It’s raining here in So. California. Gonna send you all something some day soon. Be blessed.
Oh wow I hate that for you.. keep your head up better days are ahead.
That Gremlin can become a quick, and great race car. The engine bay was built to run a V-8 so that is why it is looking good for your needs. Everybody thought they were ugly with the back end chopped off, compared to the hornet, which is completely the same from the front, to the back seat. Happy New Year Family. 😊
Gremlins came factory with a 304 V8 from 72-76 I own a 1974 factory V8 gremlin.
I graduated from H.S. In 1972, and remember the Gremlins well.
You have the best channel on RUclips love you all. Thanks for taking me along.
Thank you
Boy that AMC Gremlin sure brings back memories LOL.Can't wait to see what your plan is for this good old Gremlin.Happy New Year Josh and family and everyone have a Happy and safe New Year.GOD Bless.
Thank you
@@Sleeperdude You are so welcome.
Yes the stretch of 1-59 on the Alabama side is pretty rough. Im off the Rising Fawn Ga exit. First exit on the Georgia side. Y'all keep up the great content. 🤘🏻
Love the Gremmie. I have a 1980 Spirit Street-Freak style with a Chevy 350-700r4 combo and a narrowed on the left side only Ranger 7.5 rear. So much fun. Definitely watching this build closely. Happy New Year Sleeperdude family, you're awesome!
This is going to be great!! Cant wait to see what happens next to the little Gremlin. (just dont get it wet 🤣🤣 )
Thank you
Its going to hit the wall and be destroyed that's what you do in a burnout car to win competitions. Ask me how I know .
@@josephschaekel5293 Do I need to ask 🤦♂No I guess not. But it is going to be fun to watch him slam this about. 👍
I can't believe you found a Gremlin! I noticed you are missing the original AMC Gremlin Gas cap (and you NEED to get one!!). I MAY still have the service manual for that and will send it if I can find it. Now that you are on the AMC train, a 1968/69 Javelin should be your next acquisition!!
Love How Big Sister Shares Her Lap With Both Siblings for Naps. My 2 Sisters Didn't Want me Near Them On Road Trips!
My big brother had one with a Mustang Corbra Jet power train. 10 wide rear tires. He loved that car as much as his dog !
Hey y’all!!! Glad to see a new project in the works. If I’m not mistaken when y’all asked about a smaller car I believe I recommended a Gremlin. I remember in high school a guy nicknamed Torch owned one not sure what size motor but he definitely lifted the front end off the ground when he got on it. Have fun as always and looking forward to seeing the build and how she turns out.
So did I
I know EXACTLY where that swimming pool is on I59 nb in Trussville. And my flatbed one ton bounced all 4 casings off the ground!! Love the Gremlin , a guy I went to high school with nicknamed his the IROC-G and it would burnout for days.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
401 AMC is a torque monster.
My recollections of working in that vintage AMC was like working on GM cars, EXCEPT for the engine compartment, there it was parts from GM & Ford mostly, but with an occasional part from Chrysler thrown in to keep you guessing.
AMC bought engines, steering columns, suspension parts, interior parts etc. from the big 3, they would in some models mix blocks, heads, distributors, etc. from all 3 makers on a single engine.
I enjoyed the show and as always love the family involvement 😎😎
I remember when the Gremlins first came out (old man here lol) at first glance they were all glass and boy we thought that those cars were ugly lol but I guess by comparison of the other cars in the 70s they were, too bad you couldn't of found a Vega, when I was a kid they done a lot of 350 swaps on a Vega the 350 seemed to fit under the hood pretty easily.
You guys keep up the good work and I will definitely keep watching.
😎😎😎😎
Another good video you all. I agree about Alabama roads. I tried to buy a 77 Gremlin (Purple) in late seventies.
another great video guys love the car :) my friend in High School her first car was a amc gremlin it was so cool in 87....
Awesome
Hey guys! Great pick. Do us all a favor. These are know to have gas tank explosions if it in the rear. Be careful with that.
Also, if you put a fuel cell in, build a fire wall or surround. Look what happened to Brent from PFI in skiddy. Don't take the chance.
We all want to watch more Sleeper Dude!!
Let's go! 👍couldn't find a much shorter car! Perfect for Josh's driving style! 😆
Exactly
I love this dude. I just got myself a 72 gremlin and it’s got a 351 Windsor in it now. It’s cool to see someone posting a build on one on RUclips. I haven’t gotten around to posting mine yet
Yet another great video, absolutely love it & really looking forward to seeing upcoming videos with progress on the Gremlin 👍👍👍👍
A 13b rotary would be unbelievably cool in that little Gremlin!
Yes!
350 and power glide is perfect in my opinion 😊
I agree, but using a Vortec, a lot of the parts (heads, water pump, etc.) won't interchange with a regular small block. I would source a true 350 4 BM with small combustion chamber heads and flat top forged pistons. a perfect setup for nitrous.
A cousin had a Gremlin with the 258 six and automatic. It was a spirited performer. It could only get better with a V-8. My vote would be a 401 AMC V-8, or a Ford V-8. They share a lot of parts.
Awesome thanks
This is going to make an awesome burn out car! I had several gremlins when I was younger and I really liked them. Had several with the 304 and one I put a 360 out of a jeep in it. It may be beneficial to tie the rear sub frame to the front one for what you're going to do with it. Super excited to see you guys build this one👍
YES...GREMLIN!!! I am an AMC lover and Gremmies are at the top of the list. I applaud your buying decision and cant wait for the vids. You and your family rock...you're truly blessed... keep up the great content!
Thank you so much
Awesome build. It would be awesome to find an AMC v8 to put in it. I know they’re expensive to build. Or maybe a turbo SBF. They’re cheap to build. It’s you’re car, but something different than the standard SBC could be fun.
Awesome thanks
