obsessed w moon song. the dead little bird is her love for the subject that she offers like a gift but they treat it like she killed something beautiful so now they have to throw it away but it’s not her fault she killed it it’s just in her nature. the pity that that line contains is heartbreaking.

    • @amandajm
      @amandajm 2 года назад +17

they want to love each other as much as they can (as friends, whatever) but it’s in her nature to fall in love too hard and kill it

absolutely in love with this song and its meaning!!

  • @amandag6295
    @amandag6295 2 года назад +84

The bird metaphor in moon song always kills me because i think of it like this:
A dog bringing its owner a bird thinks it's giving them a gift. Its a symbol of love for them. The dog is saying 'look I put effort into hunting/finding this thing and now I'm giving it to you because this is a precious treasure'. The bird in this song is a metaphor for all of Phoebe's love and devotion that she gives this person.
But no dog owner has ever looked at a dead bird in their dog's mouth and appreciated the gift. They tend to be upset, or disgusted. The sweet ones will pretend to enjoy it and then promptly throw it away.
That last line just hits so hard because to me its saying that 'you saw all this love I was willing to give you and you hated it, you didn't want it. To you it was disgusting, but you know I'm too in love to understand my devotion is a burden to you.
    Yeah...

I Know The End is one of my favourites closures to an album; the song feels like a release of all the emotions and trauma from previous songs. It’s the equivalent of just letting yourself feel everything and cry and scream about it! I absolutely love it!

Punisher is like the “night” version of Folklore (at least to me). This feels like an album you and your friend would listen to while in a camp, sitting by the bonfire and having reflections about life.
She said this album is “like a love letter to your crush (and other loved ones) before the end of the world”. I don’t know but as the themes go and were presented (+ the fact that it was released during the pandemic), I think it really is a perfect description

If you ever listen to Phoebe’s first album, Stranger in the Alps, you’ll notice that the lyric “but you know the killer doesn’t understand” from Moon Song matches the tune of “Killer” from that album!!! She’s an absolute genius.

I’d heard “I Know The End” a few times without paying much attention, but the first time I really intentionally listened to the whole album from start to finish, the entire second half of that song made me SOB like I’ve never cried from music before. It feels like extreme catharsis, and I connected with it thematically so intensely that for weeks after, I couldn’t NOT sob listening to it. A masterpiece.

Moon Song is one of the most captivating songs I’ve ever heard. I’ve heard it so many times, yet I still find myself uncovering something new about it every few listens. Like for example, we know the moon’s gravitational force controls the ocean and the tidal waves. I think that’s why Phoebe incorporated tons of water imagery throughout the song, literally from start to finish, i.e. “you pushed me in” (like metaphorically into a body of water), “Tears in Heaven”, “Until I cried”, “nautical themed”, “You’re holding me like water in your hands” (one my personal fav lyrics of the whole album)….UGH it’s just so good. SO good.

Chinese Satellite and Garden Song remain my favs.
Chinese Satellite was a big one for me, I feel the way she feels. I've seen a lot of loss, and I want to believe the people I've lost are out there somewhere... but I can't trick myself into that belief. I simply don't believe in an afterlife as much as I'd like to have that comfort. It's cold, it's isolating, it's this insurmountable longing that cannot be satisfied.
I can't quite put my finger on why I love Garden Song, the whole song is a dream that paints this picture so vividly in my mind, the world around you being beautiful and idyllic but failing to feel strongly about any of it and time passing you by without your notice... Like nostalgia? Trying to recapture feelings of youth and the failure to do so? I don't know, I may be missing the mark on this one, but that's how it makes me feel.

fun fact i read somewhere that may or may not have been intentional:
Moon Song. beautiful song right? gorgeous.
“Phoebe” is Greek for “radiant, shining one.” It’s also the by-name of Artemis… goddess of the moon.
“I’d give you the moon” has a whole other meaning to me knowing that info. she’s not just giving the moon to this person, she’s giving her entire being.

Watching you is the closest feeling to listening to these songs for the first time, it's magic that you can't truly feel again but watching you allows me to borrow that feeling. You pick out lyrics and offer meaning that I'd never considered before, it rounds the song for me. You have to listen to her group with Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus, Boygenius. The combo of their 3 voices is magical. One tip, the studio Boygenius recordings don't do the songs/their voices justice. Listen to/watch their set at Brooklyn Steel (it's the full EP, all 6 songs, and is available on RUclips) it is an unbelievable performance.

I have been waiting for your reaction!! I didn't realize quite how much I listen to Kyoto til it was my top listened to song in 2021, so needless to say its one of my favorites. Chinese satellite is another, especially the first chorus but really the whole song hits so hard bc of religious upbringing. For that song, I think of vegetable as a slang for a person in a coma or a braindead patient, which some people believe you can come back from, or don't want to pull the plug on in the hopes that they'll come back by a miracle.
I could talk for wayyy too long about the lyrics of all of these songs because they're just so good! It did take me a couple listens to really understand the depths of all her words but I genuinely like every song (hoping that happens for you with Graceland too, because I love that song and how it addresses her understanding and devotion to friends who are really struggling in life)
Would love to see your reaction to stranger in the alps as well as the boygenius ep, a collab between Phoebe, Lucy Dacus, and Julien Baker!! It's amazing and got me into Lucy and Julien as artists as well, who have some great albums. Lucy and Julien also did the harmonies on Graceland too! (one of the songs on the boygenius ep called Ketchum, ID has some ethereal harmonies and vibes)

Moon song is my absolute favourite!
I think the references to the dog bringing a bird to the door symbolizes how dogs tend to bring back dead animals to their owners as a way to show their loyalty and how they genuinely think that it’s something that their owner will appreciate. She is the dog doing anything and everything to please this person but it never seems to be enough and they never quite value it as much as Phoebe wishes they did.
In the last verse when she says “you are sick, and your married, and you might be dying” I think that it refers to an exaggeration of her significant being inconsistent in their relationship. Saying things such as they are sick of her, they want to marry her, they feel as though she is suffocating them.
This whole album is truly a masterpiece!

just a tad bit of context, chinese satellite is about (in my opinion) her belief system varying from the person that she loves and about how she yearns for something to believe in, like her loved one. he could never be her vegetable, like on life support, because she thinks there is no life after death and he does. but she expresses the fact that she would become those evangelicals that she was screaming at before even though she would be embarrassed if there was any chance that there could be a life after death and if she could be with her loved one after she dies. chinese satellite is such a complex and deep song and i love it so much

Since you liked this, it makes me think you might like the album Carrie & Lowell by Sufjan Stevens! It’s such a popular album and for good reason :-)

Hi Michael!!! I think you HAVE to check out Cody Fry’s music! Mainly his top songs: I Hear a Symphony, Photograph, and Underground! It’s a very cinematic style, almost like they were made to be in movies or musicals. They’re beautiful and honestly magical. I would love to see your reaction on them, I think you would love them (I know you like piano a lot, and Cody Fry is all about piano) 🤍🤍

So I’m a horror writer and the book I’m working on the mood playlist is this album. If I need to get into the headspace she takes me right there. If you haven’t yet Smoke Signals is a different vibe but it has amazing lyrics.

Everyone I’ve watched react to this album makes the “mom come pick me up I’m scared” face at the end of I Know the End, it’s my favorite part 😂

The best thing about this album is after almost every song you think that was the best, by far my favorite. And then the next song tops it

i didn't like this album at first listen, i had heard so much good about it, but i guess that day i wasn't prepared for such heavy lyricism, so i ended up finding most of the songs quite confusing and boring.
but how i was wrong!!! listening to this album while in the right mood is just MAGICAL and Moon Song ended up being one of my favorite songs of 2020
