  • Nestled high in the mountains of western Montana is one of the best preserved ghost towns in the state. From gold stories to reomance and bust, the ghost town of Garnet is well suited for anyone to be able to visit several preserved buildings and see the interiors and artifacts. The refreshing cool air atmosphere and scent of pine add to the experience of really being in the great outdoors. Wheeled vehicles can access the town on the dirt roads during warmer months, and snowmobiles are great for winter access. This is one of the more picturesque, non-commercialized ghost towns with plenty of history and scenes to enjoy.

Garnet isn’t far from me. We take the school there for a field trip every year in the spring. Winter it’s buried in snow. But by about mid spring through until the snow falls it’s easy to get to off Hwy 200. You’ll drive through/past Lubrecht Experimental Forest. That route in, via Lubrecht, is passable without issue after the snow melts and it dries up a little. GPS will sometimes try to send people out through Bearmouth, which I would not recommend to anyone trying to visit unless you’re in a pickup or other rig with some ground clearance. It’s a bit tight and not usually well maintained.
