Unfortunately, the minerals and soil washed down from the Algarve hills has led to soil erosion and impoverishment of the land. This has been greatly exaggerated in recent decades by the ploughing of the hills by mini bulldozers capable of tackling all but the steepest land leaving it loose and easily washed away when the heavy rains come. The ploughing is to minimise the risk from wildfires and protect small plantations and vineyards etc. This would be better done by flailing instead of ploughing which would reduce the combustible material to a minimum but still leave a light covering of grass and roots which would resist erosion and maintain fertility.
