- The law was originally intended to encourage investment in American Clipper ships, shielding owners from maritime disasters. In most cases, it limits liability to the value of the vessel and its freight.

If there might come some kind of case , it sounds like it will be twisted like the bridge currently.
Yeah….How does the old nursery rhyme go?
London Bridge is falling down
And the lawyers are lining up.
It's almost as if the lawyers are worse than the defective Hyundai ship.
Almost??
that 200 lawsuit needs to be updated. It's ridiculous.
Thank you. Watching from Alaska.
Verrrrrrry interesting.
Stay tuned.
😢I’m from Maryland now been living some other state for a while now this is sad that happened in my home state. It could have been prevented.
how did you put up with that racist bridge for soooo long?
@andrewty37 : Donnie douchebag had the opportunity to get laws passed to improve and protect the infrastructure and the environment but chose to " yap about a crooked election BEFORE he was elected " !!!!
How ?
It’s these same ancient maritime laws that permit shipping companies to not have to cover merchant mariners with workman’s compensation. If you get hurt on these ships you have to sue the company which could take years of litigation.
It’s fairly obvious no insurance company will be able to cover this. It will bankrupt several parties then the rest will fall on the taxpayers.
Hope they make it biger and better
So let me get this straight...we went from rowboats to clippers to 300,000ton behemoth contaner ships to progress more goods for commerce globally but no one thought of the necessary parallel mandatory safety regulations needed to keep humans and structures safe? It sounds like another caae of profit being more important than anything else? This was a terrible tragedy with the cost at least 6 lives and untold costs in damages, lost commerce, wages, taxes and secondary expected losses.
We had an accident in 1980 whereas a commercial freighter collided with the Sunshine Skyway bridge causing massive loss of life and major damages. Hence federal laws were inacted to prevent such tragedies again. That was over 40 years ago. This catastrophic and tragic incident was 100% preventable. It's been a week and nobody can seem to answer any reasonable questions with some factual, accurate and honest answers. Shame on government stepping up immediately not with facts but with rhetoric that all Americans need to somehow be held responsible for the massive costs to be incurred cleaning up this disaster and to rebuild the bridge. Our prayers are with the families who sadly lost loved ones. Also our prayers go out to all workers safety and health in the coming months and years. It is a shame they put the governor, mayor, Buttigeige and e en a 22 year old fisherman to give us their thoughts and assurances theywill do everything to clean up this disaster however no one would take the responsibility for some actual and honest answers to how this could of accured and why protocall was not followed.
Coming this fall on NBC, “Law & Order: Admiralty Law”!
Singaporean firm whose ship took down the Baltimore bridge just cited an 1851 maritime law to cap liability at $44 million, if we poop 💩 on your deck you have to clean it up seriously 😳
Yup, sue happy USA needs to find some way to push the billable hours.
All US Courts are under Maritime Law since the original Constitution was replaced in 1781, when the United States was Incorporated. That's why all lawyers are BAR certified.
By this reasoning, an indigent homeless man in a five foot rowboat could knock down a bridge and they could only sue an indigent homeless man with a five foot rowboat ,,,
When the media disagrees with a law they love to point out how old it is. Instead of just saying “Maritime law” or “Admiralty law””19th century maritime law”.
When some belligerent fool wants to complain about something they don't understand, they use phrases like "the media" and make non-sequitur arguments that have nothing to do with the substance of what's being discussed.
🙏🙏🙏
It's frightening to hear how nonchalantly an attorney's forked tongue will roll off a list of potential victims he can sue for damages. Sue the state for "defects in the bridge design"? Sue the Coast Guard for certifying the vessel?
Those people will sue their own mother for a dollar. Probably less.
2:08 The video would have gotten more views if he had wore that divers helmet on his head while he was being interviewed.
could you please make the audio loud enough to hear?
Turn up your hearing aid
How about a tunnel?
Why does this keep coming up? There are already tunnels there, and some materials are not allowed in tunnels.
well we all know the Biden Admin thinks tunnels are just as racist as bridges.....
What in the sovereign citizen is this clown talking about…
If they invoke that law hopefully Trump will remove every shipping line they own from this country.
The trucks are too big to drive and commute. Buy a smaller car to drive around
Lol everyone blaming the ship/crew instead of blaming the blatant obvious reason. The lack of concrete dolphins, no tugs sent by the port, only 1200ft distance between the 2 pillars of the bridge which depended on those 2 pillars & they still didn't add the dolphins. Wtf? & look at the audacity of the Baltimore govt to blame it on the crew. Utter disgrace
Have you done any research on the evolution of the size of container ships since this bridge was designed and built?
What is the protocol for tug assistance in this area?
When did you get your certification as a marine accident inspector? You must be darned good to already know the "blatant obvious reasons" behind this tragedy.
Don't worry! Joe already said the federal government would cover the entire bill for repair! With taxpayer money of course...and to the families of the deceased, don't be upset, because Joe knows exactly how you feel! He lost a son you know!
And he also said his son died in Iraq.
"The LAW is an ass" as the old saying goes.
Time to update laws across the board.
