Gang culture was always around in America, dating back to the rise immigration on the east coast. Cities like NYC, Philly, Chicago, Newark, Boston and other's have been known to be ganglands that helped shape and build those places. Mafia in the 20s-50s was a real era. You had KKK patrolling the South since the slaves got there. They went strong throughout the 40s-70s. Black gangs are more new and this guy is rapping about how it's nothing new under the sun.

I remember when I saw this video on box videos. I was absolutely blown away by Quiks return once again another classic. If u grew up in the 90's you knew Quik took his time & he never put out garbage. When he dropped his album it was basically flawless. Production off the charts. Quik is one of the greatest of times no question.
Thank You, he was a big deal in hip hop in the 90's but once Dre and Snoop crossed over with their albums and were goin over triple platinum and other artist followed in the late 90's and early 2000's it makes Quik look irrelevant when you go back and look at his albums. His albums were still goin gold which was a big deal back then but once rappers started goin platinum consistently they just brushed off artist goin gold.If Quik had New Yorks support he probably would've been respected more but they didn't like him. Most of his love came from the midwest and south besides the west coast. When his 3rd album dropped he didn't really even go on tour and it still went gold off his name alone that's how popular he was just in the black community. If he would've sold out and tried to be on tv every minute like Snoop was no doubt white people in the suburbs would've bought a majority of his records too
@@hennessyapplejuice8331 He was big back in those days. He stopped touring after this song and all of the fights he would get in because he was Piru. He only toured the west and never strayed away from it, that's why he never became super big. But in Cali, dude is a legend!
@@jamesduckery Yea that's what i was basically trying to say.A few things set his career back but him stopping touring outside the west was a big part of it.I live in Ohio and remember when his first album dropped and it was huge.I had older cousins who were mid teens go to his concert and skipped school to see him when he arrived at our sports arena earlier that day. Some people was hip to doing that when artist came to town they would go catch them early on when they're checking equipment and all that sound stage stuff.Anyway they met him and said he was cool and they asked him was he a blood and they said he laughed and said what y'all know bout bloods and crips. He also told them he wasn't tryna sound like a after school special but make sure they finish school bcuz it was super important. He knew they obviously were suppose to be in school then but maybe didn't know if they skipped just to meet him or that was a regular thing to skip out.But yea Quik goin around the country he couldn't take his hood with him like he could more on the west where they all jump in cars and follow him so he was more comfortable

If you check out the song deeply, it's actually saying that it's not a good thing that those other cities "are just like Compton". The whole time, he talks about wanting to go to a place in which it's cool and people are not gang banging, only to find out, it's the same thing from back home.

San Antonio has changed tremendously, since the 90s. I grew up here in the 90s and back then you couldn't just into any other hood not expect shit not to go down. Where shit really went down was every year downtown during Fiesta
I remember the incident he was talking about in Denver. I also know the skating rink and the incident he's talking about. I lived near that skating rink and I was sad that my mom wouldn't let me go. What happened at that venue was all in the news and it was blown out of proportion by the Denver media. Which is sad beecause we DESPERATELY needed more rap concerts in Denver back then. All you heard on the radio then was some pop music, alternative, and country. To get any RnB or rap music you had to go to 1510 KDKO on the AM frequency. And the frequency was shoddy at best. SMH

I find it amusing that the premise of this song/video is that every place he and his crew travels to for tour dates are just like Compton, and then right beneath the video, there's info about his upcoming tour dates. 3+ decades in the game and dude is still crushing it 💪
Rob "Fonksta" Bacon is the one who came up with the bassline and the guitar parts. Starting on Way 2 Fonky he was Quik's songwriter partner playing on everything that included live instrumentation. Texas is closer to the west coast than it is to the East Coast, so I listen and bought more west coast artist, love sum quick and spice one.
The flow the art of story telling and the beats this song is ahead of his time
I used to listen to this when I was 63, and now I'm 17. This will forever be a classic.💚
I have heard this in years.. granted I was like 10 or 11 when thus came out, it was dope to hear a popular rapper mention my city, STL. It sounds even better today! Thus was a dope song. Im a young 41, but they don't make songs like this no more...smh
I remember seeing this on MTV raps in 92!!!!! Made my summer!
Quik is the most underrated producers of all time. This track proves it and many more.

“Texas ain’t no different from the rest, SAN ANTONIO” DJ Quick, underrated as always
We need the explicit version. I still have this cassette. This is a banger from beginning to end
Im 58 & love his story telling. Peace youngblood. 504 love
DJ Quik 👑
I find it amusing that the premise of this song/video is that every place he and his crew travels to for tour dates are just like Compton, and then right beneath the video, there's info about his upcoming tour dates. 3+ decades in the game and dude is still crushing it 💪
Qwik good everywhere. Man is so appreciated and underrated at the same time it's crazy. If Qwik ain't in your rotation you need to treat yourself.
John Singleton set the tone for every hood in the 90's
Love how he showed love to Oakland real legend 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾✊🏾💯 from the bay to CPT
My nigga QUIK. Tonight , my favorite song for life , He let them know
That bass line was crazy. I didnt know he played it too. Damn. This was a classic
Yes, he did and he plays MANY instruments. I’m a ROCKER at heart, but Sir DJ Quik is the BEST in my opinion!!
Rob "Fonksta" Bacon is the one who came up with the bassline and the guitar parts.
Starting on Way 2 Fonky he was Quik's songwriter partner playing on everything that included live instrumentation.
Safe + Sound is where you see most of Bacon and Quik's greatness come to pass.
Quik's Groove II
