I’ve enjoyed his story about Woodstock, I’ve first saw the Woodstock movie in the 6 grade in band class and never forgotten about that movie so I bought it
I love this presentation.. In another comment I had mentioned Man walking on the Moon, At Dinner that evening at the Astronauts tale. A consensus broke out. What would be remembered more 50 years from now? "Man walking on the Moon or Woodstock?" One of the Astronauts Wife's shouted out. "Woodstock! Because over 500,000 people witnessed it and only one witnessed Man walking on the Moon" Source... I was at that table. Peace & Love..
Ididn't make Woodstock but 5 years later I went to the Woodstock of the mid west the Ozark Music Festival. I know you never heard of it but it was the last out of control 3 day festival and it's known as the greatest festival no one has ever heard of. The same thing happened that did at Woodstock but instead of rain and mud we had oppressing heat of 107 degrees.
I'm 70 and although I wasn't at Woodstock I appreciated this program and watched every minute of it. It evoked a lot of thought and memories. I was in NY the day before the concert started on Rt 87 traveling with family to the White Mountains of New Hampshire. I saw a few VW buses and motorcycles with long-haired kids and really felt the pull of adventure from it. A great time to be young.
I've heard that the cops at Woodstock were great. Thank you for your service. RIP Wavy Gravy - Hugh Romney (I wish there could be millions more with his heart)

I was at a Moody Blues concert in Milwaukee in 2019-- during a heavy thunderstorm break, there were 2 aged sisters sitting next to us----- As we were chatting, they told me they were 60s groupies, travelled over the country for decades following bands from fest to fest--- They pulled out their phones, and showed me their square pictures (126m) of them at Woodstock, Atlanta Pop, and some other old concert photos---
I was a Military Policeman at West Point at the time of Woodstock, just a year out of college. My roommate told me he heard about a concert nearby that weekend and wanted me to go with him. I declined as I had a date at home that weekend 250 miles to the north on a 3 day pass. Who knew it would be Woodstock? He got on the cover of Life magazine at the top of the hillside. Being a draftee, I was more in line with the hippies than with the military or the police. I may have crossed paths with this state trooper as we had joint jurisdiction with the State Troopers on a state road that went thru the military reservation. I also had to go to the Dutchess Co. sheriff's department to pick up AWOL soldiers on occasion. And I once got pulled over by a trooper on State Rt. 17 for speeding. I had just gotten finished that morning with qualifying with our 45 pistol. The Army being the Army, they didn't have ear plugs for us. I couldn't hear a thing for a day. And to top it off, my hot 65 GTO muscle car picked that time for the speedometer not to work. The cable needed lubricating and I planned to have it fixed while home on leave. I was guessing my speed based on the tachometer and apparently doing badly at it. I was doing 80 in a 65 zone. Luckily the trooper was a former MP and he let me off with a warning after I explained my situation. Another time, my GTO overheated on 17 coming back after a 3 day pass. I pulled off at the next exit and into a local garage. The attendant was a local off duty sheriff's deputy who was a former MP. It could have been Dutchess Co. I don't recall. He got me some water for my radiator and got me on my way. I always had my MP uniform hung on the driver's side when I travelled and it helped me.
Very nice view of the big W from another side. Respect to this man. Also I was very pleased to see even a small mention of the legendary Chip Monck. Recordings of the event showed him to have MC'd the event (as well as his many other stage manager duties) with amazing calm , wisdom and clarity ("come down off the lighting towers" "don't use the brown acid" etc.). As this police officer (amusingly pronounced "ossifer" by one of the lady commenters) was rather far from the stage, he probably didn't even know about Chip's vital role in this marvellous event.

Woodstock was before my time. It was before my mom's time. This event was beautiful, and I'm thrilled that it's still being talked about today. What an amazing event. This video was beautiful
I remember Woodstock, but I was too young to drive, and too young to attend. I don't know any of my neighborhood friends or neighbors that attended. I knew of the happening via news coverage. I was afraid of the drugs so easily available and used by these young people, but I sure thought they were having a great time. It always reminded me of the Vietnam conflict and the many family and friends that were sent to Vietnam. The music was fantastic and I still love the sound of the 60's and 70's.
In 1969 I lived in a neighborhood that was literally saturated with hippies in Pittsburgh called Shadyside and when I had just turned 14, with a friend also 14 years old saw a sign on the local record shop, the listening post, that for $14.00 there was an upcoming outdoor concert in upstate New York called the Woodstock aquarium festival. $14.00 was the usual profit weekly from our paper routes and his 18-year-old brother would be driving and our parents forbade us to go absolutely. In High School I resented my parents but now at age 67, older than my parents were at the time, there is no way I would have let my 14-year-old son to go to such an event. What would have probably happened, been wet and miserable, probably would've smoked pot and lost my virginity years before I actually did. It was history being made and I am glad I was alive then.
I was 10 when Woodstock happened. Lived a few hours south right outside of NYC. The big news leading up to and during the festival were the roads and highways had become impassable. 1969 was quite the year as was the year before - 1968. Crazy times then and crazy times now.
I was a U.K cop who worked undercover for most of my 31 years, including working many, many festivals. I was 19 when Woodstock happened, I would have loved to have been there, but I did manage to go to the Isle Of Wight Festival around the same time. Broadly, I agree with what Dan Carlson says here - like me didn't approach the situation with preconceived ideas. Since I retired in 2000 I've been a promoter and tour manager, and have worked with many people who appeared at Woodstock. I'm just off on tour next week with my dear friend Barry "The Fish" Melton ("No rain! No rain!) for the umpteenth time, so I must have done SOMETHING right!!!! I'd love to meet Dan Carlson....
Do you regret working undercover to bust pot heads? (Obviously the dangerous drugs require containment) but did you ever bust a pot head and regret/feel bad about it?

This is funny....I was at the original festival...I was at Bethel Woods recently to see The Who (The first time that the band as a group had played the site since Woodstock) and as I was walking in there were some NY State Troopers standing in the spot that I saw when I first walked in 1969. I asked one cop if he had seen the Woodstock movie....he said no.....asked if cops talk about the cops at Woodstock...Said no....Then find this.

Some young people today have zero respect for law enforcement and many go armed to events. Our society is not what we know when we were teens. I had respect for authority and teachers, and my parents. This event today would leave a mass grave. It happens at smaller concerts because not many respect themselves and much less, the law. Why can't we feel safe going out for a night of entertainment without some a-hole creating chaos....
I was there... but I wasn't a drug user. I became just too tired to remember anything. I was exhausted most of the time. Johnny Winter was the highlight of the event to me.
I thought it sucked and I love 60s and 70s music. 500,000 people all sharing a single stage, and the entire first day was all acoustic. I can imagine you were exhausted in the chaos.
So sad to hear about Yasgur..gone to soon and a trail blazer Anthropology is what needs to be on every school syllabus. Middle school, High School and College. Major milestone thanks to the man that opened his heart and made a statement Yasgur..proved his neighbors and many others who stereotyped the youth, "Hippies" were WRONG.. Yasgur opened his heart and property 🎨Arts & Music Culture were destined to prove how resilient and peaceful a massive group of people of all ages and backgrounds to be in at best with nature!!!
The speaker did a good job in telling his story. Painting everyone who attended as hippies with tie dye is a broad exaggeration. Just look at all the photo's of the crowd and the vast majority wore their hair in the style of the day and shirts with stripes far exceeded any other style.
I was 19 yrs old and me and a buddy had concocted a story about wanting to take a short 3 or 4 state tour of the US for a week or so and each of our girlfriends at the time did a masterful job of keeping our story straight. At the time it made sense, was plausible and looked like we'd pulled off the great escape for all four of us to drive from N. Texas to NY. But.... my buddies girlfriend had made one costly mistake. She had told her younger sister of our devious plan quite literally when the four of us were within an hour or so of leaving. And, of coure there were no phones so the tattletale and her mom drove over to our apartment and were caught red handed just finishing packing up getting ready to leave within the hour.. The confrontation was not a great deal of fun. All the other parents were tipped off within a short time. The plan was busted and threats of bodily harm felt to be a certainty. On the surface, none of the parents had a clue what Woodstock was, The TV several days later started showing news clips. That just brought on more outrage. We all lived through it, totally bummed to this day some 50+ years ago. Another final twist of the plot didn't happen until 2 or 3 years afterwards. Purely by happenstance, I ended up dating the tattletale sister in college for a good while afterwards. We're still pen pals to this day as we both crossed past 70+ years old. a few years ago.
Damn hippies! You hold him down, and I'll cut his hair. -- Just kidding of course, but this was in fact the sentiment for some at that time in history.
Listening to this, I thought of the Glastonbury festival in the UK. I actually know very little about it, but it's another large music festival, in the summer, held some years, other years not, and it started about the same time as Woodstock, and is still popular. Unlike Woodstock, Glastonbury is on radio and TV, and all the rest. Apparently it's quite informal, but not in the chaotic way that Woodstock was. I'd like to go someday.
no one ever mentions the Army helicopter that flew over the crowd and threw thousands of daises onto us, to actually snatch one out of the air made you special, people came up to you and wanted to hold the daisy--my tickets are # 00917 and of course I still have them
Great video. An Epic moment in history. The woman who spoke first had me confused unless she was taking a nap. Richie Haven came on stage at around 5 pm on Friday. Now had she said CCR or JJ, that would have made more sense. Flower drop happened on Sunday after the afternoon rainstorm.
To Steven 710 So if someone was was overdosed on drugs in Portland do you think the rioters would have helped the pigs clear the way for an ambulance? I think not.
Exactly...I think it was a dime to dial, and only for a minute or two, then you would get prompted to insert a nickel to continue the call...and again a short time later you needed that other nickel...maybe a quarter just gave you more time, less interruptions. I never had a quarter. I was lucky if I had that initial dime.
Can anyone answer a question please? Were there more guys or girls at Woodstock? From the videos it looks like guys significantly outnumbered girls by about 5 to 1. What are the statistics? Thanks for your information.
Great insight very relevant to what's going on today. Maybe could give some lessons to the Uvalde pd. Surprised this is in Texas the shooting gallery of the USA. Keep rocking on 🎵🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
Cops were a lot cooler back in those days they were more friendly they always try to help kids out not like today different world today very mean mean people that’s the same will never be the same again how sad
Sir, your values are correct. I/we we wrong - however ‘we’ went as different as the establishment thought. Just wondering how many undercover, oh never mind
At about 43 min. in the woman talking about working in the company that did the LSD experiments on those rats and then the way she laughs when she says " and most of those rats died " ... disgusting to have to hear that story ... horrible and certainly was not what most of us expected to hear .
Alvin Lee ,coming in on a chopper, said he got high just by flying over the audience, and believed the blades essentially inhaled it, or blew it around or something. he walked thru the crowd to get away from mgrs.,and such.
The cover photo for this vid gets mixed up on other sites saying its 69 when that was woodstock 94 or 99 or am i wrong .no one wore baseball cap backwards then as u see 2 in the crowd
Slow moving motorcycle rider in a sea of people, helmet not required. It was hot, and the rider was driving at a snail's pace. Guessing the cop just wanted to show who was in charge. Had a fight ensued, authorities would not be able to maintain order.
Although I really enjoyed watching the entire video, I would have enjoyed it more had there been a speaker that was actually somewhat close to the action. I appreciate this guy doing the best he could given that he was hardly there at all. Every account is valuable as the pieces of this event are slowly being put together.
He gave his account from his perspective. He can’t give any other account- for those you’ll have to find them from the others who were attendees, and still others from performers, promoters, etc. Perhaps try contacting the Allen library to see if they had other speakers who attended Woodstock or participated in other ways for their perspective. This speaker, Dan Carlson, wasn’t “hardly there at all,” he was right there for all three to four days, just in a different role. Too bad you can’t appreciate what he’s talking about- his appreciation for what it was, the unexpected half million young people gathered to experience peace and music.
@@greg7129 Gosh, I guess I was being a little critical. Can you recommend any good sites for me to visit where I can get the real facts Greg? Already assuming it’s not gonna be from the government, or any legitimate universities, or research centers, or any other credible source.
This guy gives a totally wrong impression of the people who attended Woodstock IE: ALL dressed in tie dye, just love the way he keeps calling them hippies all the time rather than festival goers, this gives an us and them impression, IE: authority v hippies, he can just hear the bigotry in his talk.
Agreed 100% - seems like a decent guy but absolutely trapped in the old right-wing hatred and judgement box, rather than trying to understand people of different backgrounds and viewpoints. I know several people who attended the concert. They were not wild hippies, they were college students, and one of them told me there wasn’t nearly as much drug use at the festival as many continue to claim. Sure there was some - it was 1969. Meanwhile, what about the massive alcohol consumption that happens in this gentleman‘s slice of the culture, rampant alcoholism and such? The irresponsible tobacco abuse? His friends and colleagues weren’t perfect either. Anyway, after hearing the 10th stereotype “hippie“ attack, I gave up on this.
You both are not listening to him. He’s telling his story from his point of view, that of former military and then a younger police officer. His perspective was that of a LEO vs hippie/ kid/ college student. You have gotten caught up in his verbiage instead of hearing his praise of these attendees. He was savvy enough to realize and appreciate the joy and peace of the event which, obviously, deeply influenced his career and life. It’s really unfortunate that you can’t appreciate it for what it was instead of getting hung up on the terms he used- which, coming from his perspective, was completely appropriate. Festival-goers? That’s a term appropriate for the current music events. You two posters sound typical for the current generation- all about feelings and no concept of being able to replicate what came about at Woodstock.
Thank you Tess, I was thinking the same thing like what did I miss. And festival goers? What a ridiculous comment, you have a way better understanding of Woodstock and obviously you’re from England, the fact you called them Leo’s dead giveaway LOLAnyway those two commenters or probably young no obviously young and very naïve
It was MELANIE who, single-handedly, saved Woodstock. Bottom line!!.........Google her story.......or just listen to "(Lay Down) Candles in the Rain"........in a nutshell, the masses of people were just going to GO HOME, as a result of the heavy rain, They needed an acoustic act, as opposed to all the big electric guitars, etc.............she got called back for 3 encores........

What would have probably happened, been wet and miserable, probably would've smoked pot and lost my virginity years before I actually did. It was history being made and I am glad I was alive then
Decent man good speaker
Some young people today have zero respect for law enforcement and many go armed to events. Our society is not what we know when we were teens. I had respect for authority and teachers, and my parents. This event today would leave a mass grave. It happens at smaller concerts because not many respect themselves and much less, the law. Why can't we feel safe going out for a night of entertainment without some a-hole creating chaos....
It is pretty sad and scary to say the least.
Great stuff - hugely enjoyable talk and audience participation
My BEST TIME EVER in LIFE
I was there... but I wasn't a drug user.
Welcome to Texas Sir! God bless you!
Such a gentleman, thanks.

The speaker did a good job in telling his story. Painting everyone who attended as hippies with tie dye is a broad exaggeration. Just look at all the photo's of the crowd and the vast majority wore their hair in the style of the day and shirts with stripes far exceeded any other style.
A lot of people that went to Woodstock were not all hippies. They were young people that wanted to be a part of the event and now part of history.
Perhaps the presenter was referring more to the collective soulfulness and "spirit" of attendees those three days than their dress.
there are some families that don't quite get along, at Woodstock we were a family that all loved each other---give it a try
i really enjoyed this
My mom said they used the stage to shout out names so people on where to meet someone or call home because communication was sparce
Very good.
Jerry Garcia (like Max died to young at 53) said about Woodstock...There was some kind of spirit hovering over that place.
Damn hippies! You hold him down, and I'll cut his hair. -- Just kidding of course, but this was in fact the sentiment for some at that time in history.
I here all those people trashed the farm after they left and the sewer problem was a mess...
Damn hippies
Listening to this, I thought of the Glastonbury festival in the UK. I actually know very little about it, but it's another large music festival, in the summer, held some years, other years not, and it started about the same time as Woodstock, and is still popular. Unlike Woodstock, Glastonbury is on radio and TV, and all the rest. Apparently it's quite informal, but not in the chaotic way that Woodstock was. I'd like to go someday.
no cops were needed, there was half a million of us policing ourselves, what few police were there were very thoughtful about the entire proceedings
no one ever mentions the Army helicopter that flew over the crowd and threw thousands of daises onto us, to actually snatch one out of the air made you special, people came up to you and wanted to hold the daisy--my tickets are # 00917 and of course I still have them

I’m Waiting for “I was a cop during Portland riots 2020 talk.” I think young people have taken on quite different identity.
I would have felt conflicted as a cop at Woodstock but probably enjoyed it in Portland.
To Steven 710
So if someone was was overdosed on drugs in Portland do you think the rioters would have helped the pigs clear the way for an ambulance? I think not.
No I don't think they would be any help at all, the rioters in Portland are a disgrace at best and terrorist at worst

@ 18:11 I'm pretty sure in 69' it was Dimes not Quarters....lol
Exactly...I think it was a dime to dial, and only for a minute or two, then you would get prompted to insert a nickel to continue the call...and again a short time later you needed that other nickel...maybe a quarter just gave you more time, less interruptions. I never had a quarter. I was lucky if I had that initial dime.
Not for long distance.
I am wondering what this gentleman, as a young LEO, thought of the public sex and nudity.
Keep rocking on 🎵🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
Nowadays, Texas gets far more storms than upstate NY.

At about 43 min. in the woman talking about working in the company that did the LSD experiments on those rats and then the way she laughs when she says
" and most of those rats died " ... disgusting to have to hear that story ... horrible and certainly was not what most of us expected to hear
.
What an amazing event that must have been. 25 years later however, Lang showed his true colors. Greedy crook
Alvin Lee ,coming in on a chopper, said he got high just by flying over the audience, and believed the blades essentially inhaled it, or blew it around or something. he walked thru the crowd to get away from mgrs.,and such.
“This is a thing called ‘I’m goin home’....by heleeecopta”.
The cover photo for this vid gets mixed up on other sites saying its 69 when that was woodstock 94 or 99 or am i wrong .no one wore baseball cap backwards then as u see 2 in the crowd
The picture does not look like the stage area at Woodstock in ‘69.
Good catch - I smell some bullcrap mixed in with the man’s excellent recall skills.
It was 4 days
Actually three days 12 hours 49 seconds!
Poughkeepsie! Haha 😂
Slow moving motorcycle rider in a sea of people, helmet not required. It was hot, and the rider was driving at a snail's pace. Guessing the cop just wanted to show who was in charge. Had a fight ensued, authorities would not be able to maintain order.
Yes that would be correct 2 cops Surrounded by hippies Hi on God knows what? They would have been pulverized!
Did you eat the brown acid? If not, you weren't really there!
"Do I have any questions?"

Anyone with long hair (except Jesus maybe) was called a hippie back then by most people ( long haired people too).
Oh, please. Bigotry..really? Did he hurt your wittle fee fee’s. He said nothing but nice things about the folks who attended the concert. Geez.

And these folks grew up and voted for Regan. Go figure!
