Some hints for the Cantenna... don't use the hot glue. The antenna connector should have a good solid ground to the can for best performance. Also, it might be better to use an N-Type or SMA connector (Or even a BNC) rather than an SO-239. SO/PL-239 connectors don't work very well at frequencies above 500 MHz. They are primarily designed for VHF-Low through Low UHF (30 Mhz - 400 Mhz)
I've got bad news. There's no such thing as an HD antenna. A TV antenna is a TV antenna. Any TV antenna will receive HDTV. ANY piece of wire will receive HDTV. It's just a marketing ploy to make you think you have a special antenna.
@@jesshadfield3566 I think that matters more with transmitting than receiving as long as there is something to catch the signal and “shoot” it to your tv

@@jesshadfield3566, this is partly true, but if you live near a TV tower, a untuned antenna will already do the job.
You forgot feeding the dish with a mictowave magnetron pulsed at the repetition rate of a SAM-2 missile battery when military jets fly over. Just make sure you let the air training commander know you will be doing this so he/she can use the gag as a test of the pilot's electronic warfare skills. Otherwise, it could lead to FCC trouble
I've done all three of these. They are so much fun. After some experimentation, I found the wide oval shaped ones to work better than the round ones, due to there being more surface area.
The adventures of Caaaaaptain Kipkaaaay!!! Gonna throw away that satellite dish, but you wonder, "What the hack can I do with this?" Have no fear, cry no tear, He's here for that hack. Ain't ya glad he's back?

Im not a ENTHUSIAST in this stuff but, im into ham radio and just saying that the coax connector should probably be mounted with screws for best results. The reason is that radio waves pick up a lot of interference when not properly grounded btw I love your vids and have been a sub for a long time
Thank you for making this video. I've been very interested in electronics and my room does not get good wifi. I'm going to try this out and see if I can get at least a tiny bit stronger Wi-Fi. You are a really smart guy and don't listen to the haters.
I would love to see a more detailed explanation for the wifi extension mod, I recently found a metal dish in the garbage and have an extra wireless router. The other materials would be easy to come by but I need more to work with than what was provided. Either way its a great video and I always like what you put out Kipkay. Keep up the good work!
Y'all inside the receiver part that faces the dish, has a couple circuit boards that are usually gold plated, and contain the good bits like tantalum capacitors, crystal oscillators, and gold containing chips. The housing is also cast aluminum for scrapping

+the pineapple bandit so, i live in southern ca... this week has been around 115*F a few weeks ago we had a steady 120*F... stuff explodes with those temps. i mean, stuff in sheds, cars, etc.
I made a parabolic mic with mine more than ten years ago. Having a smooth shiny surface works for audio as much as it does for light. I used a homemade shotgun style mic and fine tuned it with a slide rail then set screw it into position. I used a signal generator through an amp as the signal source to tune it with. I can hear people soft talking at about 300 feet, depending on the wind. A thick "foamy" is a must for distance. Later I got more technical by adding a speech processor and digital audio filter and headphone amp all mounted right on the backside in a weatherproof metal box from Radio Shack. Focusing for audio is very close to focusing for light. Well worth the effort if you like eaves-dropping like I do. lol.
You needed to ground the so239 connector to the metal can not hot glue it, you would need an active ground plane to make the wifi antenna work efficiently.
A while ago I was on active duty far off in the deserts of Fort Irwin, CA. I and my colleagues had spotty service so I made a similar device using a the concave bottom of a can and cut up my longest charging cord. Placed it from a calculated focal point from my dish I ran the cord to my phones antenna and BOOM i had service. They didnt believe it so I made calls and received messages as I was dialing the numbers, other soldiers came by and used it to improve their service.

Exactly what I was looking for. My dish is on a pole in the yard already and I have a similar $10 antenna. All I have to do is mount and turn. Thank you for this sir!
You could probably get better WIFI signal if you fastened the coax connector with screws (2:20). By using the glue, you are not connecting the ground to the can (that's the purpose of the can). Maybe it could connect a little, but the hot glue would act as an insulator.
I guess the dish as the parabolic reflector would also be grounded, but for optimum performance you would want the cantenna to be the right distance from the dish, that would take a few calculations (so the signals really focus on the can). But since this is all quick diy stuff, it would probably work anyway without all the math or calculus.
It used to be a thing to cover one with foil, attach a grow light, and hang it in a closet. They fit great and reflect plenty of light to produce healthy plant or two. Just one of the many skills from my younger days not applicable to my current life.
Hot glue will act as an insulator, and will goof with the SWR of the transmitted wifi signal. Did I mention, without proper tuning of the cantenna, you will burn out the transmitter in the router, due to high SWR.
