Tell me, why is it that brits seem to love rows and rows of houses that all look exactly the same, with no individuality or diversity? Is it a desire for uniformity or conformity similar to having school uniforms? I find it boring and wierd. I expect, however, that it is a case of a builder buying up the land and building an entire street, then selling off the houses as opposed to an owner-occupier buying the land and employing an architect to build a house to his own tastes and requirements.
I see your point. Here is another view: If I want to build a new house in this location (or in any city for that matter), I will hire a local contractor/builder. This builder, most likely, has a style of construction, access to suppliers, etc. If you want to build something different, your costs increase. This is probably why most houses in any area look similar from the outside. There is obviously some variety in the interiors. Now the question is, is it more beautiful if all the houses look similar from the outside or if everyone has their own style/architecture from the outside?
