  • I have no affiliation with Robus. I bought one of these simply because I was excited to see it released. For too long there has been no affordable option for a tall, light, well made series 3 carbon tripod with a 75mm bowl. This type of tripod with a fluid head makes composing and shooting stills and video so much easier. For years the big, expensive Gitzo I carry has been the only game in town. Now there is an option that is nearly half the price and really nice looking. In this video I'll show you why I like it.

Hey Hudson! I’m excited to see someone loves this tripod as much as I do. I was seriously considering a Really Right Stuff tripod for twice the price when I ran across this one on B&H’s website. It’s so new that there wasn’t much for user reviews yet so I took a chance on it and purchased it in January. I couldn’t believe what I got for the money. This tripod is rock solid and amazing. I use the bowl along with a Really Right Stuff TA-3-LB leveling base and a ballhead. The tripod is a bit heavy for hiking so I use it when I’m more or less working out of the back of my car or for short walks. Tried it out a couple weeks ago at Arches and Canyonlands and it withstood the dusty, windy, occasionally rainy spring weather like a champ.

Too cool Nikki! You should gamble $107 on trying out a 500AH Fluid Head, since you have just about everything you need for it. You'll never want to use a ball head again. :-) ruclips.net/video/j1h8YrcjtjY/видео.html

Thanks for the heads up on the Robus legs. The RC-5570 was on back-order but I noticed the Robus RC-5558 has the same specs except 11.5" shorter. Since I don't wander into deep crud, the RC-5558 legs are plenty long enough and match nicely with a Monfratto 503 head that I already owned. It's a solid setup with my Canon DSLR's and 100-400mm or 500mm f/4L III. BTW, the RC-5558 with the Manfrotto 503 mounted fits in the (included) carrying case.

This is an interesting product and I'm happy to see you made a video for it. I like your out of the box thinking in regards to tripod heads... it seems ballheads like the BH-55 are the standard and nearly every serious hobbyist buys one. I actually own the fluid head you're using but have only used it for video. One of my issues with the Manfrotto video heads is to use them with Arca Swiss stuff you wind up with one, sometimes two stacked adapters (in the case of an L-Bracket which orients the camera differently from the plates on telephoto lenses). I often wonder if all that hardware in the mounting sacrifices some rigidity. Another thing I figure I'd mention, I bought the light duty fluid head new but later I found one of the larger video heads for sale with a tripod used for a steal (200 for tripod AND head) so I bought it. For video I found the larger head to just be smoother, maybe it's just because it's older and worn but I can definitely get smoother pans especially at the start of the movement with the larger head. For photography I don't think it'd make a difference. Love that rock bag you're using too! Handing a sack in the wind can sometimes sway so that looks like a better solution. Happy shooting and thanks for this gear review.

Hey there. I've been refining the way I mount to fluid heads. This vid has my latest thoughts: ruclips.net/video/j1h8YrcjtjY/видео.html The key for me is to have a long Manfrotto plate on each long lens with a foot and to use a really sturdy arca clamp with easy to access handle oriented for L-brackets on the main manfotto plate. Works great and is rock solid. I could never go back to ball heads. They're a PITA after a fluid head.

Terry, grab a cup of coffee and go through Hudson's "Approaching the Scene" series of Videos.. They are top shelf in my book.. Hudson's non-self promoting approach is refreshing, especially when compared to so many other RUclips channels.. I have gained much insight from his videos..
Rather than settling for a lower cost tripod/head combination, you might consider purchasing used.. There are several venues in which great deals on used camera equipment exist.. Facebook's "Market Place" is one such venue.. I just recently purchased a "in almost new condition" Gitzo carbon fiber tripod with 75mm bowl and Manfrotto 501 fluid head for about half of the new retail cost. I was able to save enough I am getting my own Nikon Z6 in the next month or so..

Hey Hudson, just found the channel and enjoying so far. As a panoramic photographer myself I’m interested in your use of fluid heads. I’m looking to upgrade what I use now, which is only a standard ball head and pano clamp on top. I was thinking of the arcatech ball head as it’s small and lightweight and sticking a rig on top. But I quite like the idea of a leveller and fluid head as I only shoot single row. I’m normally high in the mountains shooting down and In to distance, what’s your best experience with kit in that scenario. I think you might have saved me a small fortune here 😀

    • @HudsonHenryPhoto

    • @HudsonHenryPhoto

I think you should absolutely go for the 75mm bowl and not a center column set of legs. It gives toy more stability and options down the road. The Robus is better made. not to long you just changed up all your tripod gear to leofoto, have you started being an ambassodor of leofoto?

Hey Eric, I get this question a lot. I'll be totally honest. I really reject the idea of lightweight travel tripod. I'd rather take a big Joby if I just need something to stabilize for a group selfie or something. Doing real low-light landscape or cityscape work with a lightweight support whose lower legs are too tiny to deploy with a center column that lifts you above the stable nexus of those legs and that, when fully deployed makes me stoop to compose even on level ground? No, it's just too frustrating and in my opinion rarely stable enough. My lightweight system is a Benro setup from this vdeo ruclips.net/video/J01nQg_f4fo/видео.html It's not exactly sold that way anymore, but an similar setup is in my links: www.hudsonhenry.com/atslinks. Personally, I"d rather have my tall Gtizo and 500AH. Whenever I don't I find myself cursing it's absence. I'd rather leave a lens and some food behind. :-)
