Just did this on my 92 gmc van. GM #7812853. My old spring was broken. It was a little tough to remove from the hole but a slot screwdriver will pop it out. I hooked a piece of wire to the new spring to ensure it didn't fall down the column. Now here's where it gets tricky. The lever doesn't just pop back in like in this vid. The spring seems a little long and the shift lever won't quite get back in. Refusing to cut the spring a little short, I took the wire out and hooked it back to the top part of the spring. Pulling the spring and bending it outward (it stays in the hole) I was able to insert the lever to mate with the spring. As I pushed the lever in I slowly released the wire to allow the spring to sit straight. One shot and it worked! Took me hours to figure that one out but it is quite doable.
Thank you, as you are saving me a heck of a lot of tear down to replace the spring so i can do it from the shifter arm hole without tearing the column apart. So glad i found your video. E
I put a ball lock pin in mine. When I park to exit my vehicle for any amount of time, I pull the pin and the shifter goes with me... Nobody is stealing my ride...
Here's a tip. If you you lose spring down in column, take column completely out of vehicle hold the column upside down and shake a little. Got my spring to come out of the only access point "1x1 inch hole for shifter" in a matter of minutes
I’m trying to do this now on my 65 GMC. The tip of the shift lever broke off and the spring was old and bent up. Got the spring and the broken tip out with a magnet and I have ordered a new spring and lever. Hopefully, I can reassemble this without taking the column out.
Great video but I'm trying to just remove the shift knob tip on my 2000 Cadillac Escalade. Can you help by showing me how to replace the leather tip only?
I have a neighbor with a 1973 Continental. She went to put it into park park from drive and she cant get it past reverse. The shifter lever is flopping around. Is it repairable?
There are shift levers out there from other companies such as Billet Specialties that work just fine with our columns. If you want to change it out, feel free. Just be sure that whatever lever you plan on using that it is for a GM passenger car column. Many of the truck and van columns used a different lever that is not inter-changeable.
Any of our four styles of shift levers will work on that year GM column. The turn lever may work. Is the hi/lo beam switch for the headlights on the floor or is it activated through the turn lever by pulling it towards you?
What does the spring do? I just discovered my spring is broken about a 1/4 of an inch.I thought it was the plastic bushing are the holding pin..My shift lever is loose..where do I get a new spring? the drawing of my GMC 1992 van doesn't even show a spring...
My understanding is the spring is no longer available. We don't have any scrap yards here that have older model Chevy's. I read somewhere you can order a spring that belongs to a newer Chev but you have to cut 3 coils off to make it the right length. Trust me...I'm going to fix this!
+Cody Montana it seams finding a spring is the easy part...i just discovered that the pin that holds the shift handle into the shifter is driven in one way..you can't drive it back out! thanks GENERAL MOTORS
The spring keeps tension on the upper shift lever. Have you unhooked the shift linkage and tried to shift the column? Another thing to check is the lower column mount. I have seen them tightened so much that it is actually squeezing the lower end of the column and putting pressure on the inner shift tube making it hard to shift. If these things don't help please give us a call and ask for tech. 517-424-0577
Follow the shift linkage to the tyranny....there where it connects is a place to adjust. Try changing that a little either way or just one way. Worked for me

I can’t get the pin back down in the column. Is there a good way to go about getting it back in the column?

Does this help if the shifter is flopping out of gear and making my trans pop up into neutral?
Will this help with a loose shifter does not lock into place very good...?????

What if I'm thinking of doing some customization to my vehicle, does it make me wrong for wanting to change my shifter lever??

Any of them fits a Cadillac Eldorado 1970
I was wondering if I could use the steering column out of an automatic pickup to replace the broken one in my manual transmission truck
Or maybe just replace the tilt with one for the other. My tilt in my column is broken so the steering wheel moves up and down freely

There are many write ups about how to fix that exact problem. Common issue

+Bill Dozer I have a 2002 Chevy Silverado and my shifter spring broke too I can't find any information about how to get one...crazy J phantom

My 57 Bel Air is very hard to shift into gear. It is coming from the column. Would a faulty spring cause that?

Marty, I messed up! I did exactly what you said not to do. My spring fell in side the column. Please help.
Same thing just happened to me! Is it completely necessary to remove it if I have another replacement spring?
@@brookside805 I've been driving around over the last 6 months with the spring inside the column and haven't had any problems thus far 🤞
Use magnets to guide the spring up to the top then use another small magnet to get it out.
Wait I didn’t realize this was a year ago sorry lol
I have a 91 Cadillac brougham I can't seem to get the spring out would there be anything holding it in there or is it stuck ??
Not that we're aware of but it is an OEM column and may not be the same as the ididit column.
I’m having the same problem

Question for anyone how knows exactly how to change the gear position indicator on the auto matic 1969 g10 Chevy van non tilt?
when i put my gear on Park it drops to Reverse , any ideas on what it might be???
did you figure out what the problem was?

Why do you need to take the spring out
need the punch for the pin for 75 caprice
You don’t need to remove spring what are you talking about
If your replacing the shift lever, why even remove the spring? You removed it and then replaced it. Makes no sense.
I love how he made it sound like removing the lever was gonna make your car explode but it's just 3 pieces you gotta be somewhat careful with 🤦♂️
