    I like you, Jeff. You review Twilight 2000 and other Free League products, so I respect your opinions. That being said:
    So -- I don't dislike Ginny D. She's promo'd Tales of the Valiant, which there was no money in doing. I do think a lot of her stuff is clickbait, but that's just my opinion. Should anyone be ragging on her? No. Am I moved by her anecdote about having a panic attack at a paid vacation she took on WOTC's dime? No, not really. I'm a little too busy paying bills and trying to make ends meet and saving a little for retirement.
    I will say that there are a bunch of incredibly bad-faith videos put out by 5e "content creators" on RUclips that kind of give the game away -- that there's no money in talking about anything but 5e and these people gotta eat. Off the top of my head I can think of:
    - Taking20's "Why I'm Quitting Pathfinder 2e"
    - Dungeon Craft's disingenous "Is Paizo going out of business?!" concern-troll because of Pf2e releasing humble bundles*
    - ZeeBashew's incredibly bad-faith review of Blades in the Dark, and his mean-spirited "parody" of Cyberpunk RED which implied it's a mess of rules (It's not)
    *Dungeon Craft seems to, lately, be off the 5e bandwagon so I guess he's had a change of heart, but that was still fucking bullshit
    You can also see in the brief pivot a bunch of these people made in Spring 2023 in the wake of the OGL fiasco. Almost all of them switched back to covering 5e once the heat died down. And you know perfectly well why. There's no money in covering other TTRPG's.
    So if I have a low opinion of these people, it's because they're the youtube equivalent of used car salesmen and advertisers. They just want to make money off engagement clicks. So yes, screw their opinions.

    I love Shadowdark... such a great little game, great community too, and Kelsey's just a great person who loves the hobby, knows her stuff, and really loves her fans, etc. And people are dead right, she gets shit because she's young and because she's a woman and a lesbian - often people saying her KS would have made less if she'd have been a straight middle-aged white guy. Even if that's true, so f*cking what! Us white guys have had more than our fair share of the pie for a long time. Lets share and spread the love around. Shadowdark's a really nicely put together game, that looks and plays great. It stands on its own merits and if more people got to play it because they were attracted to it based on Kelsey's gender and/or sexual orientation, then good!

    I watched that Ginny video - I don't watch a lot of her content but I think she's great for people that are new to the hobby. Good for her for making $5K to host a weekend of live gaming. Personally, I think a lot of people are jealous that she has built up a strong brand and a popular RUclips channel. I think more female TTRPG content creators is good for the hobby.
    Agreed with your comment on Shadowdark -- Great game -- but yes -- what makes it better than so many other great OSR games - like Labyrinth Lord, OSE, Lamentations, Basic Fantasy. Great game -- but these are all great games to include SD! I am glad she's doing well -- and wish her success! I feel like SD is good for the OSR -- as more people will discover OSR from SD (the D&D 5e players) and some will realize that there is ton of other great OSR games available.

    • @SneakyNinjaDog
      @SneakyNinjaDog Месяц назад

      Also, Ginni Di did not state what her pay was. So the 5K was not hers - it was just what people paid to play that weekend (and some possibly paid more) and the responsibility she felt doing this luxury DnD experience (the pressure). It is a good and fun video. People were just reacting to the thumbnail or some such... some angry at "paid gm-ing" and some at the high price. But it was a very special situation and not what a regular paid gm would charge 🙂

    • @quantus5875
      @quantus5875 Месяц назад

      @@SneakyNinjaDog Yes -- agreed. I'd never pay that kind of money myself - but yeah I guess some people would -- and I think the $5K was like for a weekend of gaming not just one game. Not sure -- as I didn't (I have to admit) watch the whole video.
      I'm actually fine with pay-to-play gaming -- like $10 to $15 dollars per person per VTT session (even $20 per player per session I think is ok). Totally worth it for something like that -- around the cost of going to the movies. Heck, a lot of people would be ok with making ~$100 per 2-3 session for doing something they enjoy doing anyway. VTT is starting to make this a reality -- and makes it so much easier to find people to play with.

    RE: Acolyte... It was cancelled because the viewing figures were terrible and it had some bad reviews if you don't include the access media - many part or fully owned by the said studios. Having suffered watching it, it was an awful show. Terrible plot, characters, script. Some of the lightsaber duels were good though. Same as Rings of Power. Zero respect for the lore and source material. That's the problem I have with these shows - they are low quality, written by people that can't seem to plot out a decent story with decent characters and, certainly, don't collectively respect their subject matter - some would seem to have little knowledge of it even. But yeah, the prequels were naff too, so 50%+ of Star Wars content has been w*nk for a while now! 😂

    Us old timers are laughing hard at folks spending $5k on a D&D game with an 'influencer'. If these 'influencers' are putting out content for clicks and to make money then I don't see anything so wrong about other folks jumping on for click to make money of them. I just don't watch this stuff. The reason we have so many young people with mental health issues may be because we have let them grow up exploited by tech companies who have no care other than profit.

  • @UrbanVerse69

    Regarding the Acolyte, it was not a good series, objectively so, because the audience numbers simply weren't there. It started with lower viewership than the previous series, Ahsoka, and dropped even lower after that because of poor writing, terrible lore breaks, and unimpressive performances. All of the ones proclaiming that it was done wrong and canceled too early are simply those complaining the loudest about it, even though they're the vast minority. When you don't get the views from the audience, of course Disney is going to drop the show. In the end, its all about the money, and they lost money on that show.
    I don't care particularly strongly about D&D content creators one way or the other; I'll watch some of them, and if they can make a buck off their content, all the more power to them. I'll certainly criticize WotC/Hasbro for their horrible business decisions and won't actively give them any of my money anymore (I'd already noped out before the Great OGL Debacle of 2023), but if others want to engage with them, whatever. My tastes have never been with 5e (coming from a mostly 3e/3.X background), and there are certainly better games out there that I'll devote my time and attention to.

    Glad you discussed this Jeff, thank you. I wish more creators were less anxious about audience capture.
    Civility is a lost value in a lot of our culture, for a few notable reasons mostly around financial and social incentives. My approach is simple. First, respect people's boundaries. Second, be civil. Third, be productive (if you can't help move the discussion at hand forward in a beneficial way, move along and find a place to help).

    You think this generation is screwed over and full of socail anxiety, wait till the kids who were in High School during the height of Covid enter the workforce. Being social like all skills is a skill that needs to be cultivated, nurtured and grown. None of this is being done so they freeze up in social encounters because they never learned. It's like putting a bike in front of someone who never learned, they are going to just fall down since they didn't learn.

    There's an unhealthy cycle going on. To establish a fanbase, creators are tempted to insert politics, create clickbait thumbnails, and be controversial. But the clicks you get are a sugar-high. What happens next is the viewers that most want to "own" the opposing side, are the first to jump in, for the purpose taking their shot at the opposition. Ginny D, and most of the other creators, know full well they're being provocative. They know verbal punches will be thrown. But, they want the clicks. If you take a shot at Gygax, you know that's provocative. If you talk up safety tools, you know you're being provocative. And it's not just creators, it's WOTC. Kyle Brinks knew he was being provocative with his white men leaving the hobby quote. They can't go a quarter without WOTC kicking the bee hive.
    But there's a strategy to this. The worst thing you can say about any product is it's alright. You'd rather have half the people hate the game/channel and half the people love the game/channel then producing a forgettable product. How many meh movies can you remember? But you remember all the bad ones and the great ones. They create these controversies because they stick in your memory.
    I don't have to play baseball to hate the Yankees. That's just how tribalism works. There are people that have never stepped on campus, or even in the state, that love or hate college football teams. My wife hates every football team from the South, because it's hot and humid in Sumer and they have mosquitoes. That's just how it works.

    It would be good to see independent publications done by 3rd parties. That write modules, and scenarios for one rule system. Then, cross over to another rule system where it adheres to gameplay of that system. I suspect that copyrights concerning keywords found in a game system makes it a legal challenge.
    The advantage of this is for both players and referees. Where an understanding of one rule system can be translated into another rule system more easily. People may find it to be a good idea using a familiar adventure to bridge the gap. When learning a new rule system, and can use methods utilized in their previous experiences. They bring those over into a different rule system, and can make close comparison on the logical reasoning on both systems.
    The advantages for the independent developers is perhaps additional sales. The advantages for the first party rights holders is additional sales of their own supplements. I am not aware of this taking places anywhere. What I do often hear is you can just rewrite the entire adventure to adhere to a different set of rules. It may be better when the developers of modules, and scenarios submits their work to the first party developers. Which read over it, and run it for themselves. They keep in contact with the 3rd party on how arbitration should be handled for their system. You being a referee may be able to glean enough from the same module being used in 2 different rule systems. This will help with efforts in the future for more accurate translations between them. Which, could potentially lead to additional sales that would have otherwise been walled off.

Every once I'll watch some stuff like Ginni Di -- that video also caught my eye -- and it was a good video -- I think she's super talented and creative -- but it's pretty basic TTRPG content -- meant more for less experienced TTRPGers -- just starting.
      It's pretty amazing -- I started following TTRPGs on RUclips back around ~2012 and back then there were not many people doing it -- I think it's mostly the popularity of 5e -- but number of content creators has really grown.

    Social anxiety issues are not connected to TV use. Neither is adhd. Most older people had/have similar social disorders, it is just that the diagnostic process was less good back in the day and diagnosing adults is harder as we've learned to mask behaviours which would lead us to be ostracised, learned to suffer in silence.

      There are many scientific studies which claim sitting babies and very small children in front of a television for extended periods of time lead to serious attention issues later in life. Not sure where you're coming from claiming TV and ADHD have no connection. I'm not a scientist, and I know the research varies, but there is the belief there IS a connection. I never said anything about TV and social anxiety being connected; I said people spend so much time with their noses in phones/tablets and those connections and they don't establish enough face to face social connection. People learn how to act in social environments through experience; if there isn't that experience there will be problems. ~ Jeff
