Ok, soo basically- this song is about this group of people who have been enslaved in the desert by a powerful wizard for generations just so they can build him a Tower that goes to the sky so he can fly across the stars... "In the heat and rain, with whips and chains, to see him fly, so many died, we built a tower of stone, with our flesh and bones-" And despite all that, when the tower is done and he jumps from the top, he falls down to the ground instead of soaring, so all they can feel is despair. Despite how much pain he put them through, the last thing they still had was the hope that their sacrifice wouldn't be in vain... And when he died, that hope died too. Even so, they gotta move on... As dark as it looks, there's a rainbow rising... :)
This song... not only is it musically one of the best heavy metal songs of the 70's, the lyrics have a deep meaning bearing a stark warning. On the face of it, the song is about a wizard who has enchanted and enslaved people to build him a tower to the stars so that he can fly, only to have his attempt fail catastrophically and for them to watch him plummet to his death, breaking the spell. But Dio himself said that this was really just a metaphor, and that it really describes any group of people who fall under the spell of a charismatic demagogue, suffering to help them achieve their doomed vision, only to be lost when it inevitably falls to ruin. "A Light In The Black" is about those people trying to find their way back to what they lost after they followed "the wizard".
To prove you wrong we have to dig deep. Digging deep we find Dreamer deceiver......the single greatest vocal performance ever recorded. Stargazer is a close second.
Dio HATED this album... well he said side 1 was decent.. side 2 was "pretentious shit for Ritchie and Cozy... oh, I can do a solo for 10 minutes.. " ... Dio denied it, but he was really bitter when it came to Ritchie Blackmore, and it showed.
RAINBOW. One of the most influencial bands of the 20th century. Most 80's metal bands were influenced by Rainbow and Deep Purple. Ritchie Blackmore is the man.
The guitar solo has a mystical Egyptian feel to it. The next song (there are only 2) on that side A Light in the Black is pretty heavy too. Other songs by Rainbow to check out are Gates of Babylon, Man on the Silver Mountain, Stone Cold and Since You Been Gone.
This is just a complete masterpiece the incredible drumming of Cozy Powell the astounding voice of Ronnie James Dio the electric guitar of Ritchie Blackmore the bass of Jimmy Bain and the keyboards of Tony Carey these are just incredible musicians Rest in peace Ronnie James Dio and Cozy Powell and Jimmy Bain
It is a story you would tell children because it is about something horrible. A megalomaniac wizard enslaves or entices people including the narrator to build him a Babel-like tower so he can fly to the stars. Through all their suffering they keep the spirit by imagining how great it will be to actually see the wizard fly at the end- they are a part of something amazing, however brutal the conditions are. In the end, the wizard si ply falls to his death because he does not really have the ability to magically fly to the stars. The narrator then bemoans how pointless the toil was. The wizard was a vain fool who paid for his arrogance with his life after believing his own BS. The slaves were weak fools for suffering for the goals of a vain fool and paid for it with their long suffering. Don't be the wizard and dont be a slave to the wizard.
Sounds like society and rhe elites today. We toil and slave away making a living, while inflation ruins our gains only to make rhe lives of the wizards better then ours.
I was the same with Dio when I first heard him. Yeah, he can sing... The more and more I heard, the more I grew to love his vocals. Now... when I think of the ideal heavy metal vocalist, I think of Ronnie James Dio.
Same here. Shamefully, I can remember a time when my dumbass 20something year old self actually thought that Ozzy was better than Dio. How embarrassing to have ever thought that.
A very proper reaction to this all time classic. Brad talking about "being in a trance and spaced out", and watching Lex go to "outer space/middle east?" during Ritchie's solo was the best. She ends with it was "magical and mystical".
You guys have listened to the most powerful voice ever in rock!!! Dio was the most gifted and most inspirational singer of a generation!!! He was everything that was good about metal!!! His voice transcended the heavens and never, ever will be duplicated!!!! He was truly The Man on the Silver Mountain!!!!
Cozy Powell was an amazing drummer. He was in the Michael Schenker Group. Michael Schenker on his own is a great musician and he was in a band called UFO
Huge Michael Schenker fan here. His influence on hard rock guitar based music in the late 70's and 80's is profound. He influenced players in iron maiden, Mettalica, Megadeth, Exodus, and Pantera. Even Mike McCready from pearl jam, he has a UFO cover band.
It never put me to sleep or thought of it as a lullaby. Always made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. Exciting and epic, and when Ronnie sings, "I see a rainbow rising," it always lifts me.
Lex - that lead guitarist is Ritchie Blackmore - who metal fans often put in the same league as Jimmy Page. He was a great blues / hardrock guitarist. Anyway I hope you do more Rainbow - my favorite song is Man On The Silver Mountain. I hope you react to it sometime. Happy Thanksgiving to you and Brad. Thank you for your reactions.

I haven’t seen any deep purple reviews yet Richie Blackmore was the guitarist on most of rainbows stuff as long as you’re going into the proto metal you might check out child in time by deep purple.
Of the many iconic guitar solos Ritchie Blackmore has recorded with both Deep Purple and Rainbow, this has to be one of the top 5. The slide over the Hungarian Minor (Gypsy) Scale sounds almost Satanic. Greatest guitarist of his generation imo.
As others have said, one of the greatest rock songs of all time! Plus one of the greatest vocals ever and one of the greatest guitar solos ever! It's not about being the fastest. There's incredible beauty in that solo. The drumming, keyboards and bass are all perfect too. Seriously, few songs have ever topped this one. The whole band were really on their game for this! Great reactions. Brad seemed to be getting into it. Lex - he's small but mighty .... he certainly was!
What you get to hear is the compositional skills of Blackmore in a well crafted song and melodic tune ... and then there is the musicianship of all the band
Was lucky enough to see this tour, the rainbow spanned 29 ft across and 14 ft high, everyone forgets what a integral part Roger Glover played in this band, Superb.
Lex listens to music the way I do lol. I began listening to Rainbow in my teens, probably around 1979 or so. Ronnie James Dio has always been my favorite singer of all time and his death is the only celebrity's I actually cried over.
Brad, I think the word you're looking for is "hypnotic". And Lex, I love your take on outer space with a middle east, like if aliens had a Dubai. Priceless!!!
If you want to hear an epic display of Dio's vocals, of which there are many, check out the Rainbow song LA Connection. One of his best IMO. His voice soars over a sparse but catchy Ritchie Blackmore riff.

Think of Crazy Train and Over the Mountain or Diary of a Mad Man. Iron Maiden also has great lyrics that tell a tale. I am not really sure who wrote for Dio, if not himself, but he chose them. And they were often weak, fortunately, his voice was one of the greatest. That is just my opinion…Happy Holidays
A very mystical magical song and with Ronnie singing yeah you get transported to another time and place. This song takes me to a time long ago. Like the sorcery days...and also to space.
Rainbow Rising is a fantastic album. Ronnie James Dio is a fantastic singer. Ritchie Blackmore is a fantastic guitarist and the one who came up with the number one riff ever, Smoke on the Water. Add Cozy Powell(drums), Jimmy Bain(bass) and Tony Carey(keyboards), all great players in their own right and you have the first super band ever!

Yeah, back in the days we made music - gave a song some time, let it grow. What´s on radio today is something else... RIP Ronnie! One of the best singers I have ever heard. Brad & Lex: Love ya!
This is definitely my favorite Dio vocal. I always thought that this song was about the building of the pyramids, and the Alien connection with that. Imo
I hear some harmomic minor scales notes in this. That is what gives it and Eastern sound. But the guitarist is Ritchie Blackmore. He was the guitarist in Deep Purple and founded Rainbow after leaving that band. But this song can be a warning about not following false prophets!
Dio is a total icon of metal singing. Pro singers from all types of genres praise him. I knew it was just a matter of time before you two caught on to him. Oh, and also take note that you are listening to the guitar artistry of Richie Blackmore
When I was in grammar school the nun ask the class what they want to be when they grow up. I say I wanted to be a stargazer and the witch hit me with a ruler.
Thank you for once again allowing the God Of Metal Singers to breathe again. It is wonderful to have this played and sung about. Dio has been and will always be one of my favorites forever. If you want to check out another Rainbow Song check out Gates of Babylon. Also one of the greatest guitarists ever, Richie Blackmore.
This song has a second part "a light in the black" in the album stargazer faded To a light in the black. Its about how the staves make their way home. Rainbow was amazing with dio, the joe lynn turn era was ok too but dio is king. Just an amazing singer and writer.
For me, this is one of the best songs ever written. What a masterpiece! 👌
Truly, and about the only long outro I actually appreciate. Whatever "it" is, this song has it in spades.
Yes. It’s an anthem.
@Mathias Totally agree.
It is , this album is special , love it .
Actually if you count, this guitarist, has written around 4,5 or 8-9 of the best songs ever written.

I agree with you. I was thinking of the tower of Babel as well.
Maybe a take on the Ancient Astronaut theory. I feel Stargate was somewhat inspired by this song.
Dio was partly inspired by a film starring Jack Palance, The Silver Chalace according to Cozy
And it's a metaphor for goverments using their people to achieve illusionary goals regardless of how much people will suffer
This girl gets it…. The guy has no clue
Can never get enough of DIO. The man is second to none.
This song is very 70's sounding but still a great one and one of Dio's best !!
I love dio so much we got robbed of this one of a kind gem of a human

Lex hears a great guitar solo that took her off into orbit. Brad, is that good?
Listen to that guitar too!!!!!
My favorite song of all time.
I get chills evertime i listen ti this song!!!!
This is definitely my favorite Dio vocal. I always thought that this song was about the building of the pyramids, and the Alien connection with that. Imo
Gotta say, the way Lex explains stuff is awesome! You two are the best!
I still have this album on cassette. I have listened to it countless times
Catch The Rainbow is a must listen song
Apart from stargazer, probably my favorite rainbow song and they have many.
When I was in grammar school the nun ask the class what they want to be when they grow up. I say I wanted to be a stargazer and the witch hit me with a ruler.
Thank you for once again allowing the God Of Metal Singers to breathe again.
It is wonderful to have this played and sung about. Dio has been and will always
be one of my favorites forever. If you want to check out another Rainbow Song
check out Gates of Babylon.
R. I. P. Ronnie James Dio , you are difinitely missed.
Ever hundred years or so the human race experiences joy.
It may be science,it may be theology,it may
art.
This time its rainbow.
If that is a lullaby try catch the rainbow live! DIO is next level on that.
Temple of the king was the first rainbow song i first heard in 1979 I am did heart fan of Ronnie and Ritchie both are out standing and Lyricists
I remember that movie with the 'Luck Dragon'
Rainbow had another song you might like, it's called Street of Dreams, with vocalist Joe Lynn Turner
