    California is not alone as many states controlled by Democrats for decades are on the same path. The one closest to me is Illinois and they are even further along the path than California. They are at a junk bond rating on the bonds they float to keep the state afloat. The push over the edge is coming as the DOJ halts federal funds in December to sanctuary cities and states who do not comply with immigration laws.
    There is about to be a massive problem in these places as the people have had about all they can stand and no one in these governments is listening.

      TIOMKIN1 So you are saying that these people paid into a pension fund and you want to take it away? Then you people will complain about social security some more and demand it be taken away even though these people paid into it their entire lives.
      What they are not saying here is a pension fund is completely separate from government money. The contributions have already been deducted, and put into a fund. That money is invested. Then what usually happens is federal, state, and local governments put their greedy hands into the pot and borrow money. The same as social security. The government has borrowed (stolen) most of the program now they want to end them.

      She must have been one HELL of a librarian.

    • @videomaniac108
      @videomaniac108 6 лет назад +11

      none of your business: What these people are talking about is the ridiculously high(~7.5%) assumed rate of investment return their retirement funds would generate and the unreasonably low contributions that were expected from the employer and worker, for the level of benefits the retirees expected to get. This huge underfunding was chronic and prolonged over many years, with officials wilfully ignoring the warning signs of the future problems this practice would create. When the officials did on occasion in the past try to make minor changes that would have improved the financial health of the funds, they were met with stiff and fierce resistance from the employees and their unions. When you consider things like this, along with things like the "pension spiking" problem then yes, the retirees bear a large share of the responsibility for the mess that the pension funds are in now.
      If the public pension funds have to reduce a retiree's monthly check from $8K to $4K in order to maintain solvency for the entire fund, then that is fairer than raiding some Social Security recipient who's getting $2K per month and expecting that person to get by on $1K per month, especially in California. Today's public employee pension recipients enjoyed not having to contribute their fair share to their own retirement funds for many years. It's not unresonable to ask them now to accept lower benefits that are more in line with the level of contributions that they made, and insisted on making, over many years.

      Funding retirement income should be comprised of three parts: pension; social security, and; personal savings. Many people don't bother with the personal savings, believing their pensions and SS will be enough. Then, when something adverse happens and one of those two is cut, they scream bloody murder. Such people have no one to blame but themselves if they do not have enough money to retire. They are living the consequences of their own stupid decisions. This is how it should be.
      BTW, this does not apply to me. So I don't need to put my legs anywhere. I do not have a pension. And I won't need to apply for SS until I'm 70. I took charge of my Retirement Planning in 1981. I'm 59 and will have been retired for four years at the end of May.

    This should never be and the taxpayers should be in control of the wages and pensions for all non private employment not the government.

    While California is likely the most extreme example of pension fund shortfalls, it is only the proverbial tip of the iceberg....reportedly, unfunded pension fund shortfalls are @ $ 60T nationwide....money which can never be paid. It is also highly unlikely that taxpayers will endure increased taxes and reduced public services to even attempt to deal with this situation.
    Thus far, judges have refused to allow municipalities to declare bankruptcy to cope with bloated pension fund obligations. Orinda, California petitioned for bankruptcy protection regarding pension fund obligations @ 12 yrs. ago, and was refused by the judge in the case.

    I worked for the state for 27 yrs. My union contract was renewable every two years. The state legislators signed our new contract every two years. No one held a gun against their heads. We had a NO STRIKE clause in our contract. Don't blame US for your state politicians like Jackie Speier who endorsed our wage & benefit packages. Come to think of it THAT'S where the cuts should start. Their wages & benefits make us look like paupers!
