- RUclips now allows you to Translate any RUclips video into your own language. This is a game changer for anyone speaking a different language or needing subtitles in their native tongue.
RUclips will auto translate the video and present you with auto generated captions, even when the original uploader doesn't add the language you need. I love this feature and it's an incredibly powerful accessibility feature.

Thank you for this video. I just shared it on twitter because it was so helpful to me. I'm a huge fan of some German-speaking youtubers and this is just a game changer for me and my ability to understand their content more. Thank you so much!
OMG! All of these years I wondered why RUclips could not translate videos into my own language. Now it is available, WHOO HOO!! Thank you.
I clicked on a short Japanese video which already has both English and Chinese subtitles, and compared them with the auto-translated subtitles for both languages, the results were shocking. Not only the translations were totally out of wack, some lines didn't even show up. YET, when I tried the auto-translation for your video above, the translations were quite good. Maybe it works better only on English language videos.
I agree. I have watching several bowling videos in Japanese and translated to English and very hit and miss. Almost useless.
youryou
My parents come from Brazil, so I want to translate a video that I like/hate to Portuguese
@@doctorrobert60 Some languages still need a human to do the translating... Norwegian to English and reverse for example works fine with auto generated translations. But Russian to English or Russian to Norwegian is very bad but good enough that you at least get some idea what they try to say... Other language combinations can be totally intelligible.
@@a64738 Thanks for the information. I do still use translate. Some videos are better than others.
I'm happy to listen to your videos for several years. and turned on this auto-translation feature from the beginning. so interesting that people only now learn about it )
The feature has many more languages added and is also available on channels who previously did not upload subtitles or didn't have community contributions turned on. It's definitely an exciting time to be online and see live translations available on many more apps and many more places.
I've watched 100 tutorials on translating videos and none of them have worked. The options just aren't there. Settings you speak of just don't exist on my end.
Same problem “Closed Caption Not available for this video”
@@loganwilmoth8919 Maybe there is a tool out there that would actually translate the audio/speech into our language. youtubes cc is not good
This is a game changer!!! I have so many people that have requested my teaching videos on Canvas be translated into other languages but it was always too expensive for me. This solves that problem and allows people to view any content in their language. Accessible and convenient for both viewers and creators!!!
How can perform plz help
It doesn't for me because it doesn't work. And sometimes the creator has disabled closed captioning. So what is the solution?
@@tasyapretty I'm not sure what you are asking. How would who know what?
Oh my goodness 👏👏👏I am thrilled to have discovered this awesome option. I have many family and friends in Spanish speaking countries… I now shall be able to share so much more with them. Thank you🙏🌻🌻
Thank you so much. It's a feature I've been looking for for a long time. I tried, it works
Is there a way to add 'autotranslate to English' into the url so when someone clicks the link, it will automatically have English CC on the video?
I look forward to trying this with videos that have had the CC option activated by the uploader. I had hoped to use this as a way to get around the general (and painful) lack of auto-generated same language subtitles and transcripts in the language I am studying because it can be written in the local script and with the "Roman" alphabet, but I can't even try this option as a kind of work-around because the CC option isn't activated, not even for the main TV news channels (I just checked). I have also seen your tutorial for how to activate Chrome's auto-generated CC's, but - alas - they work only in English. Do you have any other solutions for creating auto-generated *same language* subtitles / transcriptions (or even CCs)? Thanks! Star
Exactly the same here
If you are on a phone try to switch to "Desktop site" in the browser options. Then normally that "CC" button will be displayed and you can proceed as shown in this video.
Just watched your video, Great job! And for fun, translated to Persian and was amazed how well it worked.
Thank you. Do you have to keep doing this per video? Is there a way to do it once so it does it for every video you watch?
I still have a problem. Some of the videos don’t have any
closed captions. What do you do with those with no CC available?
I have the same question and am wondering why, and how, CC would be 'unavailable' in the first place?
This video is 2 years old. I’ve tried it and didn’t work . RUclips has changed how you do it so I’ve found myself having to use google translate to do everything or you have pay for a software to do it . I see that vidiq is a good one but it costs $49 a month 😠
@patf6957 The video creator has to enable subtitles. If they forget to or deliberately don't - it is not possible to see the video with captions. In other words the above video is either exaggerating or is bullsh-t😂
It only works if the creator of the video indicates the language in which the video has been made. If he doesn't do that, RUclips supposes the language is English and if the video is not spoken in English, RUclips cannot make automatic captions and translation will not be available.
Which sucks because RUclips as a whole should have the option to translate ! Or even better my MacBook or my samsung smart tv should have a translation settings regardless the app ! To think we spend all this money on smart devises with all this hype and we can’t get a setting that automatically gives us a option to translate any language 🤷🏻♂️
Does it work with livestreaming too?
Ok
Hi Sethi, I have a French video that I would like to add permanent English subtitles on top of and make corrections to the subtitles that RUclips automatically generates. Is this possible? I want to keep the French audio in the background but have the English subtitles on screen automatically when a user plays the video. Thank you for any advice.
I’m super excited! I was waiting for that day to finally being able to translate my videos easier!
not every RUclips video in foreign language has subtitle button to enable it, then what do you do with that ?
When watching videos in other languages, I run into a lot of mistakes from the auto-generated subtitles (usually 1 every minute, depending on the accent and language). Realistically, in my experience the feature almost always gets words with ambiguous phonemes wrong, causing all generated translations to be completely off. When you get into translations for languages with a SOV structure, from a SVO structure, the auto-translate really shows its weakness. For instance, compound sentences. A very common use with native speakers.
I think this feature would have been a great pair to the community translations, but now they are forcing us to use poor translations (tbh I stopped using them all together), putting the burden right back on creators to create a solid subtitle base. I don't understand why Google continues to remove features that actually benefit the service.
Huh? They're not forcing you to use auto-generated subtitles. They're an added feature, they didn't remove anything.
In my opinion as a translator they are using all possible products to collect data in order to develop the machine learning for languages and accents. This is in preparation for more efficient languages AI generated. The aim is to substitute human translation with machine and that is a gold mine to be added to so many google products.
Although it may work for English I doubt it to work for other complicated languages like Arabic and Mandrin and so on.
@@nora-Lirong it’s actually a fact, for Japanese they have been collecting data for 15 years for Japanese, and they still cannot correctly translate common phrases correctly, I’m sure middle eastern languages and Russian are the same, since they share similar structures. For Japanese I’ve found that translate chokes on normalizer use, implied context, as well as alternate word use, and some advanced grammar. When you run into these, google translate/transcription falls apart completely.
There is also a big issue with dialects, as there are loads of RUclips channels that use multiple dialects and mannerisms in all videos, and translations never fail to be way off. It attempts to translate with a single dialect, and just “guessing” the word.
If the video has poor audio, Transcription is often great for building a baseline to save time, but it’s so far from being good enough to replace human intervention. Don’t get me wrong, I like translate/transcription, but by no means should it be forced on creators. Community translations were actually allowing channels to receive perfect transcripts for their videos, allowing language learners to practice and hearing impaired to enjoy as well. But now, RUclips has become much less appealing to anyone having to deal with these auto-generated transcripts.
@@chimpmaster they most certainly did remove a feature. Community transcription was removed
even with yiddish @nora노라 ノラ today it's working with hebrew, but sometimes the lack of punctuation ruin the trunslation,
there's also a broblem with yiddish (a jewish dialect of german), but that have nothing to do with the AI, yiddish was created before suff as movies, so like half of the words on this video are exacly the same but with hebrew letters
THANK YOU!!!! 🙏🏼🙏🏾🙏 I tried it and you explained it so clearly. Stay well 🌻
Thank you for sharing this... just wondering if after translated, can we edit it to make it more accurate translation in the language we want?
You have no idea of how much you have helped me.You put the biggest smile on my face today. I have been watching foreign knitting videos for years trying to work out what they are saying. Thanks too much for this!😇🥰

@@FlippedClassroomTutorials Hi, can I change the translations from my phone or my tablet?? Please let me know.
it's extremely useful when it's on. The problem is it automatically goes back to the default language every time you close the video. I don't understand why don't allow us to set a different default language for each saved video.
Thank you so much it worked !!! So excited
I was viewing a Matin Hurkens (whos is Dutch btw) dtd 9-10-2010. It did not provide the option to auto-translate. Clicking closed caption it returned subtitles/closed caption unavailable. Under settings playback and quality were the only options available. I would love to take advanatage of this feature and hope that it can be used on older youtube videos. Thanks for sharing your valuable content.
HUGE problem with RUclips removing the public Subtitle and instead leave the Auto-Translate
- RUclips auto caption is never 100% correct, so it can be messed up
- Google Translate now is kinda messed up too, if a human that translate it, it will be so much better
- A normal person will add some creativity into their subtitles
- Sometime RUclips didn't detect language right, there's a common mistake when an english video can be detected as other language, like Vietnamese for some reason
- The auto translator will feels very off
- It has many cons than pros
I think RUclips removing the social Subtitle is one of the biggest mistake they make, beside removing the dislike button
1. removing subtitles
2. removing the dislike button (video and comments)
3. removing annotations
4. removing email subscriptions notifications
5. removing possibility to add videos to playlists if "made for children" (?!?!)
6. removing playlist management features
7. removing titles of deleted / unavailable videos in playlists
8. removing URLs of deleted / unavailable videos in playlists
9. removing video replies... yeah...
10. adding g+ account features
11. adding other social media BS still on the site
12. interrupting playback with "are you still watching ?" dialog boxes
13. screwing up the notification features for own comments
14. screwing up the playlist behavior if enabling "shuffle" mode (maybe only a problem for long playlists, eventually goes in short loops)
15. hiding the feedback form from those willing to contribute bug reports (the one under profile drop down menu used to direct, on PC, to a page meant for mobile... which was not working... i see it changed now.. i did make a bug report at the time... did for playlists too, not so lucky on those)
16. allowing DMCA abuse (facilitating)
17. allowing DMCA abusers to doxx their targets
etc.. etc..
there's a lot to complain throughout 15+ years of affirmative action employment and allegiance to politics.. but the doxing one takes the cake imho.
As a Vietnamese, I do find it weird that a lot of English videos were being detected as Vietnamese, and the subtitles generated by them always make no sense.
@יוסף יצחק חבבו you don't open the app you have to do it in chrome

Thank you so much. I have missed many translatable videos because i did not know about this
I think this is a great feature that RUclips has put out, especially for teachers like me. Quick question: Is there a way that you could translate a video that is speaking one language to speaking the another language? Instead of sub-titles, when students are not readers yet, but they need to hear the words in their native language.
no there isnt any other way but subtitles
Really? Text-to-speech has been a feature of many applications for many years.
You're asking too much dude XD. You're basically asking a computer to interpret/translate the video in english (let's assume) into another language. maybe in a 100 years but not now XD

It worked, thank you.
A wee note to say if the option to translate doesn't appear first time, exit settings, then go back in and it will show as that's what happened with me.
Hello, is there any way you can set it to automatically translate to a certain language by default? I only want to read English subtitles, but I have to reset it to English every time. Does everyone else have the same problem and is there any solution because it's a right pain! Thanks.
Nope. Not on "ANY video on RUclips", but as the RUclips Help Documentation explains "Automatic captions are available only in Dutch, English, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Turkish, and Vietnamese."
No Polish😕
How to add other languages as he showed they are in the menu?
I just seen your content on changing the subtitle language & yes it worked. thanks.
This is very helpful and did work on my new Samsung s23 phone when I put it in desktop mode. It does not, however, work on my Samsung tv which is also fairly recent. The screen is very similar to mobile. I did rectify by playing the video on my phone, then mirrored onto TV. Worked great!
Unfortunately you can't set it to auto translate to English for example. You can default subtitles to be on when you open a video but not to your preferred language. So every time you start a video you have to go in and reset your preferred language.
O, thanks for your comment. I have not used the feaature yet though since I just set it up in one of the windows I had open. Then thought I may have to execute this in every video I am studying from. When I decided to read some of the comments after thanking the content creator, there you were - You nailed it for me. Bless you.

Thank You, I tried this feature translating German to English. While it is not 100% accurate, it is better than no translation at all. Thanks again
Is a gamechanger, thank you and Subscribed.
Is this for video creators or for viewers? I am a video creator that wants to have my videos translated into different languages. I have friends that speak French and German for example. Do I teach them how to turn on the translation, close captions for themselves or do I do it as I am creating my video that automatically translates it into French let's say?
Thank you very much for your video. It is exactly what I needed to help me at work. I connect with co-workers on multiple languages.
Hi Sethi, great tutorials. One correction, you mention that RUclips can translate any language. In fact, they don't support around 112 languages. That may seem like a lot but there are thousands of languages currently used on RUclips. Not one single Asian or Indian language that I need translated is supported. So this feature is totally useless to me, unfortunately.
Ukrainian doesn't work either. I want to watch Ukrainian vloggers, but it just isn't possible without English translations...
@@stevemcgowen same
@@stevemcgowen Ukrainian does work, your problem is that either:
1] the content creators you're watching haven't enabled auto-translate. [They have to tick a preference under YT studio and many simply don't realise]
2] There's a lag, so they don't appear to have any subs when first uploaded but will if you go back after a few hours or even days.
3] It's confusingly laid out - to get a Ukrainian option [or anything that isn't on the shortlist of subtitle languages for a given video] you have to _first_ enable auto-translate and _only then_ does an extra menu appear, this time a long list, giving hundreds of extra languages.
Many people get caught out by this design flaw - perhaps including OP.
Not available for Arabic as well.
I agree. I can't used this on any videos actually.

this is not a new feature...I've been using it for years now. And the auto translate regularly mistranslates things...I wonder if the old method is still available...
Thank you, i been trying to see how to translate from a different language to english. your video was very helpful
Extremely helpful. Thank you very much!
Just so that you're aware, I tried your suggestion and auto translate. However, although Spanish came through fairly well, I could make neither heads nor tails of Portuguese, the only other language I tried. Am I doing something wrong, or does this translation feature from RUclips suck like almost everything else they do. Before they start removing things like public closed captioning, make bloody sure the replacement (in this case being Portuguese) works and is effective for anyone to use. But from where I sit, either a robot or an imbecile translated these. When a contributor submits ANYTHING in a languate other than the common English, it's my opinion RUclips should have that contributor provide a translation. I would think that would be common courtesy, since RUclips AGAIN screwed something else up. This feature would be very helpful to individuals who are deaf or have other handicaps that would impede their use of this feature.
yeah, that feature doesn't work that good, but in most of the times it's better then nothing
…seems you got up on the wrong side of the bed?!
Gratitude goes a long way to open dialogue.
You might try it sometime…the sooner the better, really! You’ll be amazed at how much happier you will be! 🌟✨🌺
I think you're not realizing that all of this is free, they don't care about your necessities since all they want is money. youtube even can remove it and make it a paid feature once it works. I don't think a machine will be able to translate correctly because a language has so many layers of meaning. You don't realize how hard it's for a human to understand a language, it takes years to master one, even we can be glad that youtube is free, imagine one day they say, you would have to pay a certain amount of time. So be grateful, piece of turd
This translation has helped me a lot. However, I have to manually select my language every time, which is a little troublesome to use. Can I set a fixed language so that I don't need to select the language every time? span

Hello, today I tried your method to translate Tagalog videos on how to fertilize calamansi trees in a container to English. All the videos on you tube, about this subject, said subtitles unavailable. On your second suggestion, going to settings, there was nothing about close captioning. Only things listed were, annotations, playback speed and quality. Hopefully you or someone else could help me with this.
This information is very helpful to me for changing movies in the Turkish language to English on RUclips . Thank you!
how do you do that? there doesn't seem to be an option to change the default subtitle language, and most of the time the video will assume the language being spoken is english.
Amigo, thank you very much for this great surprise! I have been dreaming of this being a reality for months and months on end. And my purpose is to send translated videos to friends of mine who don’t speak English. By the way, I am the subscriber who hit the like button to be number 13. I only hope that I can do it on my iPad.
I tried it on my iPad and later on on my smartphone and neither worked. I suppose it’s because both of my devices are not recent models, which means the respective software cannot handle this new improvement. I couldn’t find the scroll-down menu to choose the languages to translate the closed captions into.
I have not tested this on an iPad but its a game changer to have live translated videos. And it also means creators and educators get to reach even more people across border and language barriers. I love it!!
But is there also a way or tool to translate the spoken word and capture the text in text format ? If I want to tranlate the spoken text in video and I want to have that text to use in a notepad or word program so to have translation of the text for further purpose. ? How do I do that?

This is very helpful. Thank you for being clear and useful. One clarification should be made. If the video creator did not enable closed caption, then the statement at 0:20--that you can get "automatically translated subtitles for any video on their platform"--is not true.

Hi,
I hoped to get a Spanish transcript, but in spite of a Spanish subtitle I chose, the transcript is still in English. Is there a way tot get the transcript in a different language?
Can you do this on a mobile device? I watch a lot in Korean and Japanese and sometimes the cc option doesn't auto generate English like it used to have that option.... So trying to figure out how I can watch and enjoy these videos but actually understand what is being said...
Does this only work on videos "you" personally uploaded ?
Any help is greatly appreciated
It works on any video that the uploader remembered to enable auto subs for. If they didn't bother, no.
Also there's a queue for google translate, so a recent YT upload might not have subs for hours or even days. Always try later.
Mobile ? Ought to in theory but default browsers and old YT apps are often simplified and shorn of features so try updating them.
Failing that, consider [trying to] add an extra, more sophisticated browser such as Firefox or Chrome.
