Balakot is a small town located in the Mansehra District of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in Pakistan. It is situated in the northeastern part of the country, near the border with Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Balakot is known for its picturesque surroundings, as it is nestled in the Himalayan mountains, making it a popular tourist destination.
One of the most significant events associated with Balakot is the devastating earthquake that struck the region on October 8, 2005. This earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.6 on the Richter scale, caused widespread destruction and loss of life in Pakistan, particularly in the northern areas. Balakot was one of the towns severely affected by the earthquake, with many buildings and infrastructure reduced to rubble.
Since then, efforts have been made to rebuild and rehabilitate the town, and it has seen some development and reconstruction. Additionally, its natural beauty and proximity to scenic areas like Kaghan Valley and Naran have continued to attract tourists.
Balakot is also historically significant, as it is believed to be the site of the Battle of Balakot in 1848, during the Second Anglo-Sikh War, where the British East India Company defeated the Sikh forces.

I have a vivid memories that Musharraf government announced the foundation of a model city (because the previous was destroyed by earthquake) and a general was appointed for this city. Huge mount of foreign grant was also announced. Can you please shed some light on this project. As an expatriate Pakistani who contributed some minor amount also wants to know if his hard earned money was properly utilized. Thanks.
