Hi all - here is a little info on the work going on here. The local farms grow a lot of high quality vegetables in the fields around Blaxhall. These fields need a lot of regular irrigation from early spring until autumn...
The reservoir being built is the second one in the area, the first being immediately 'next door' to this one.
There are three layers of substrates in ground in play. The topsoil is on top (where else!) of 3-6m of Suffolk boulder clay, and that is followed by several metres of sand.
First, the topsoil is removed and stored. Next, the boulder clay is removed and stored and then the sand is dug out to form the basin of the reservoir and its banks. The clay is then deposited and rolled out to form the impermeable liner of the reservoir. This covers the floor of the basin and runs up the insides of the banks. Once this clay lining is finished the topsoil will be laid over the banks as landscaping. A few trees are planned as is an aquatic nature reserve in a corner of the site.
As an aside, it was the ice age that deposited the thick layer of glacial till or boulder clay across Suffolk and this water proof material forms a great lining for the reservoir.
The reservoir will hold 330,000 cubic metres (72 million gallons) of water. The owners have an agreement with the Environment Agency to drawn the water over the winter months for use over spring and summer.
Any questions, please ask! :-)
