No question it's a great looking boat. Apart from what looks like a scolloped foredeck, on first glance I do think it probably looks closer to Gen 1 Te Rehutai than it does to Gen 2 Alinghi or ETNZ boats though. Will be interesting to see more footage. A massive flex from ETNZ to launch then go sailing the same day in their new boat, day 2 was 100% flight time. That would have made a few of the teams raise an eyebrow or two.
New videos on your channel are currently the ones I look forward to mosr! I loved your analysis during the last Cup and you are still the go to for all the interesting and significant bits. Thanks for your work! I’ll be in Barcelona supporting the Defender. Maybe see you there!
As a designer I think the shapes and lines on ETNZs boat are actually smoother and less „forced“ - it is actually a rather elegant boat shape wise - however their paintjob creates effects, that make it incredibly hard to read the shape properly and don’t support the elegance of the boat.
Strongly agree. I think their graphic designer is terrible, but the hull lines are so far the best of the three. it's like Te Rehutai but well harmonized. I like it a lot. France has a good graphics team, so I full y expect it to be the beauty of the pageant. This Luna Rossa is as you say, forced. I don't think I can put it better.
I personally really, really like the minimalistic Luna Rossa chrome graphics. I just think the shapes and lines underlying ETNZs messy graphics are more elegant than the one of LRPP. However compared to the crazy shapes on Alinghis boat I still think LRPP is more on the elegant side. 😂
Grazie❤
Thanks heaps for all your analysis. Great to have such a source of interesting info. Hey I just checked and it’s about 500km from Sardinia to Barcelona…. So maybe LRPP should just put the bow down and sail to the AC venue 😂 6 hour training session 😉
Paint aside Team NZ boat is the sweetest and most fair in my book, declaring I'm a kiwi here . Really enjoy your input and thoughts on design and the Cup in general. This time it will be about the foils and sails , given others can sail as well as the Kiwis. Sail GP shows that's possible. So it will be really exciting. Keep up the good work on your channel.
Agreed and I'm not even a Kiwi. I actually prefer the paint scheme of ETNZ yachts, all three AC75 boats. The new paint iteration is even nicer than the last.
Interesting to see the italians backing the more blended form of their last boat, now combined with the dropped deck of the kiwis. After this cycle we may be able to discern what the best combination of design ideas is.
ETNZ are brimming with confidence after their land speed record set recently as a part of their AC 75 preparation. They dumped their boat in the water and took it for a spin immediately. The opposition have had a few days to think about this action from ETNZ. The British boat will be interesting taken ETNZ and Ineos set the rules.
An interesting cup awaits us all . Fantastic review eagerly awaited and the next 3 also. It will be interesting to see what the Americans come uo with , Patriot was a quick boat. (KiwiBTW). So excited to see them in action. Mozzy your pronunciation of te rehutai is really good but.... Theres another one coming 😂😂
I know, and Te Rehutai supposedly wasn't that difficult a pronunciation. I live in fear of what the next one might be, but i'll give it my best shot anyways
Max Sirena said that what's inside Luna Rossa's boat is more interesting that what's been shown in the exterior ("The boat is a box : inside, much can't be seen ; and today we have shown already seen things", translation from italian : "La barca è una scatola: dentro c'è tanto che non si vede. E oggi noi abbiamo fatto vedere quello che si era già visto" )
I am not into boat-design at all and not sailing myself, I am just an interested viewer. I have been following the AC since Alingi entered the scene (I am Swiss, as you guessed right). So I learn from every video about all the things the teams have to consider. One of the greatest challenges seems to me that they spend most of the racing time on foils, so aerodynamics play a huge role, but a race can absolutely be shattered if they are doing bad when coming off the foils. So they can't completely ignore "regular" sailing. That seems to be a huge challenge. But hey, if it was easy, then everyone could do it, right 🤣?!
Thanks Tom for the thoughtful update. Do you think the rocker at the back means that it will be less 'sticky' getting up onto the foils? Beautiful looking boat, wish it was transparent though so we could see all the complex control systems under the deck
The focus will primarily be on foil and sail design/technology, with a lesser emphasis on the latter, which should significantly narrow the margins (fingers crossed). The outcome of this cup will heavily rely on excellent sailing, which adds to the excitement.
Makes sense for all teams to put their new hulls in the water with the first generation foils. It allows them to see just how much the new hull works better than the old design before plunging in to the use and tuning of their new foils.
Waiting for the new AM hull. So anxious to see it, i deeply hope that it has a similarly amazing design as the last one - i still think the old hull had the potential to win besides looking the most amazing, for me the design made the most sense in terms of my humble hydro/aerodynamic guesstimation. :)
The silver gloss on lunna rossa i find hard to look and im looking at it on youtube ? Would need good sunglasses?? Could be issues there for other boats if reflection off the sun? Cant wait to see USA, love NZL looks sleek and super stable
Thanks insightful as always. Nice ish lines but they’d be nicer and faster without cyclors pods. Power with green energy and let the sailors sail. Batteries in lower foil arms.
I was expecting something more radical design-wise going by the team members' interviews last month. The chrome definitely looks much better than their first AC75, which I wasn't a big fan of aesthetically. Beautiful boat.
That sure is a good looking craft. I had assumed the hulls were made from carbon fiber and resin. The chrome finish is curious. I wonder how that was achieved? Seems any shiny finish is as good as chrome. Extra cost and no apparent gain????
Well we'll get a better view of Alinghi today when they launch in daylight. INEOS have just teased a uncovered shot of their bow... so maybe in the next week or so. I would expect INEOS to be next as they did a lot of commissioning in the UK before shipping.
Of course it matters. Look at the resurgence of 12 Metre racing around the world. And look at the J Class revival in Europe. Maybe the Americas Cup will return to Newport and Rhode Island Sound. Even as an Australian I would welcome that. Who could forget the great battles between the USA and Australia with gorgeous yachts like Weatherly, Intrepid and the Gretals. Look at the classic lines of an Olin Stephens designed and built yacht to understand why. Luna Rossa is gorgeous and the new AC classes have introduced a lot of new technology to racing. But it's not affordable to the weekend racer, so it's wider benefit is questionable.
Good work Mozzy, that is a lovely looking boat. How will the scrutineers ensure that teams have the correct amount of computer aided input during racing?
Seems the fastest to reach foiling position but with more surface exposed to waves. And lower venturi effect (the best should be alinghi). If Etnz and Alinghi seems v.3 AC75, Lunarossa seems v.2.5.
yes, LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) used to map sail shapes. These devices. The specific device ETNZ are using was first used by INEOS in this Cup and is a device also used on autonomous bin lorries (trash trucks). ETNZ then used them, but with a stick to get a better view on their test boat and have carried it across to their race boat, albeit they will have to come off for racing.
It's Italian of course it's beautiful, I don't know if you watched the Interview with Dan Bernasconi, but I was very surprised to hear him say that the hull form isn't massively significant to boat speed and all the competitor's hull shapes would be within a couple of seconds of each other around the race course. I did wonder if the bussel would make a big difference in semi-foiling conditions. Dans comments also make sense why all the boats are keeping their latest foils hidden for as long as possible, be interesting to know how long it takes to make a new set of foils. Could you CNC machine a set of foils from billet titanium in weeks rather than months...
are fowler/extending flaps allowed in the rules? do you think anyone is using them? if a team could work out the sealing issue theyd seem like a game changer on the surface
the flaps are only allowed a single rotation point, so can't really get a true fowler flap. But if you move that rotation point further away from the wing (with a virtual pivot point and linkages) then you can mimic something similar which extends area as the flap comes down. As you suggest, I think sealing is the issue.
Thinking about it, is there anything in the rules that says you can't pump hydrogen into the bustle to help the boat move from displacement mode into foiling?
Common Australian Mega rich people. Get those wallets out and get Australia back in the Cup. Just wrong that New Zealand has an entry and we don't. I have no choice but to support my brothers across the ditch again.
