Know Your Sheroes - Episode 1 - Spamo Ladakh

In our first episode of "Know Your Sheroes," we delve into women's participation in politics in Ladakh. Despite the LAHDC Kargil and Leh existing for three decades, we have seen few/no women running for council elections except the few nominated ones, let alone winning. This is alarming as almost 50% of the voters in Ladakh are women and still their representation in political spaces is almost zero.
Our inaugural guest is Khatija Banoo, a former Block Development Councillor, who made her debut in the recent LAHDC Kargil elections. As a woman running for office, Khatija faced criticism, skepticism and doubt from society who questioned her ability to compete, often saying, "Bomek Basey chi basey in," meaning "How can a woman fight an election?"
Instead of being deterred, Khatija drew strength from this challenge. She firmly believes that if she can successfully manage her family, she can lead a constituency too and do it better than any man. Khatija is confident that women can bring about real change in elections. Her journey is the start of a movement that will not be stopped. In our "Know Your Sheroes" series, Khatija shares how she overcame numerous obstacles to run for council elections. She is the first woman in Kargil to receive a mandate from the Congress Party to contest elections, and she is determined that these council elections are just the beginning. She plans to participate in and win many more elections in the future.
Khatija is a true Spamo whose story will inspire young women and men too, to question the status quo of elections and how issues of representation, especially women's issues are addressed in Ladakh. Her fight for representation is though at a small scale, but it is incredibly important. Discover more about her journey in our first episode.

Although this woman is quite vocal and educated. But being a voter of her BDC constituency she proved quite inefficient regarding development of the constituency as expected from her.
