    If you can re-throw because of intentional interference on a drive, he should have been able to re-throw on 16. Although the spotter didn't intentionally try to stop it, he very much intentionally remained on line with the disc and very intentionally positioned himself on the inside of the curl so it would sweep just under his outer leg. He was trying to have fun with and interact with Gurthie's throw. That's undeniable. And it's undeniably avoidable because he just had to stay on the outside of the roll. A spotter's entire job is to observe while staying clear. It's interference. Gurthie should have thrown a provisional re-tee.

    • @kimmomatikainen1843
      @kimmomatikainen1843 2 месяца назад +3

      How woud you write that rule? If disc hits a member of staff, then no penalty? If it hits someone way off the fairway, no penalty? Players don't necessarily see if disc would have come inbounds or if the disc hits someone. Or if disc hits a tree, should it be no penalty? Would give a lot of room for speculation.
      Sucks to have something like that happening especially when spotter is just being an idiot. He saw the disc the whole time and could have stepped/walked out of the way, but decided to jump over the disc.
      Rules should have very little, if any rule for speculation so I would not make a rule from this.

      The staff just need to be briefed and trained better IMO. Volunteers or not. That hole sees a lot of rollers, everybody knows it. Spectators should NOT be on the left side OB and spotters should be ready to get away from the OB line the moment a roller is heading that way.

      Pretty shitty. That spotter deliberately stayed in that disc's path. Penalizing the player for what a soectator did intentionally sucks. Here’s an idea for the Garret roller hitting a spotter situation- if the card comes to a concensus (or better yet a PDGA official) that the disc more than likely would have come back in bounds and the spotter hit prevented that from happening, maybe the player just gets to drop from where it went out but without the penalty stroke? So Garret drops and throws like he did, but for 2 instead of for 3?

    1 meter relief, penalty free, from nearest line of border. Straight to the in bounds line, perpendicular to fairway from where it lies. It’s kind of interference, by a volunteer spotter, so I have a hard time wanting to punish the player, and it’s a tough ask for a helper to matrix dodge something like that! HOWEVER, the disc is out of bounds at that point, and had it hit a tree or signage of some sort, nobody would’ve bat an eye at it being OB. It’s not like the spotter was moving around, he was there when you threw it! SUPER TOUGH NO MATTER WHAT!

    • @michaeljansz4346
      @michaeljansz4346 2 месяца назад

      eh. I'm not a fan of this take. (The "It’s not like the spotter was moving around, he was there when you threw it" take, not the idea to resolve the issue. Your "1 meter relief, penalty free, from nearest line of border" suggestion is worth considering!)
      Trees and signs cant move, and are not sentient. Spotters can absolutely see a disc coming, and it's their responsibility to not impede the progress of the disc to their best ability, while still being able to perform their role of spotting. They are not supposed to be fixtures of the course.
      If a spotter cannot see a disc coming, they need to be either better trained, better positioned, or better selected.
      This spotter needs to be prevented from spotting, as he's proven he does not have the correct skills to execute the job.

      That would only work for the relatively rare situation like what we saw on hole 16. Most of the time when someone gets hit, the throw is way OB and had little to no chance of getting back in bounds. TDs try to ensure spotters know how to do their (volunteer) job and sometimes you get a wildcard.

He thought he'd be cute and move left into the path of the disc and lift his leg for his 1 second of fame. Epic fail. He should only volunteer to spar with MMA heavyweights in the future. I'm sure many disc golf viewers and GG fans would pay good money to see this guy get what he deserves.

    The bs that happened on hole 16 would make me so angry I don't know if I would be composed enough to stay in competition. His disc was clearly going in bounds and was interfered by someone not even playing. New rule should be just to place it inbounds where it stopped and not count as out of bounds.

    • @bosmith6992
      @bosmith6992 2 месяца назад

      That's so dumb though, how do rule on ¨clearly going in bounds¨. If someone blasts a shot ob and is tracking for a tree but hits a spotter, can he then just claim that it was about to kick ib so he should get no penalty? These things happen and is unfortunate, but it is rare so we just have to deal with it. I think the worst part about this situation is that it looks like he
      intentionally positioned himself so that he could jump the disc. If that's true hopefully spotters see this clip and the thought of jumping a rolling disc will never ever cross their minds.

    • @sdog1234

      @@bosmith6992 I think if they have video evidence clearly showing that it was going to go back in, or have a good chance to go back in, then was stopped by a person, that should either be a re-tee, put it back where it crossed out of bounds, or back in bounds where it stopped out of bounds. Either way, there's gotta be something to fix that, it's just not fair.

  • @kritterfox
    @kritterfox 2 месяца назад

    The Garrett spotter shot issue is such a hard one. On video we can clearly see that was very likely gonna curl back in and probably get to non-OB but in the live moment the spotter is not paying attention and out of position as to possibly even make a call of "this is gonna stay in" or "this is going out".
    Feel for him, it's like they say the good breaks go to the leaders and it feels the unlucky goes to those who are just collapsing

    That spotter tried to do too much thinking there was only one outcome, not having the logical sense to realize its a damn disc and it can do anything at any given time while rolling across uneven ground. Get out of GGs way please and the out of the way of the game while its in action in general.

  • @timdoc13

    The rule would be easy. If a disc hits a person and causes the disc to not finish its momentum you re-throw...why is that hard?

    • @KillRoy117
      @KillRoy117 2 месяца назад

      The rule needs to be more defined than that, because that could be taken advantage of theoretically. Also trying to determine where a disc would have finished is pretty much impossible to do accurately in a lot of cases of spectators being hit. In cases where a disc is saved from OB by hitting a spectator(or their equipment), there is no penalty or re-throw. So it's really about how much space they need to give players to play the game without interference. Ideally there would be not spectators anywhere near where a disc would fly, but these courses aren't built like that. They would have to cut back on spectator space, which is the opposite of what they want to do. Tricky situation, but I agree that a player shouldn't suffer due to the incompetence of a spotter.

    • @bosmith6992

      If I were to shank a tee shot straight ob and accidentally hit a person, why should I get rewarded for it? your rule is dumb. This is very simple, it rarely ever happens but it sucks really bad when it do happen.

      I get the same impression. It's interesting because his commentary is outstanding, if you've ever heard him. He clearly has an excellent mind for the game strategically and clearly he can put it together physically enough to put himself in contention, but I can only imagine what he could do if he relaxed a bit-- maybe he just appears to be that way and doesn't feel it.

    This might be my least favorite course to watch on tour. The amount of uninteresting or basic holes that are really only made difficult by insanely tight OB lines on the fairway or OB literally within circle one make it frustrating to view. I don't want to see people barely miss a difficult putt and roll 10 feet OB. If the course needs this much influence from out of bounds rules to make it playable then it just is not a good course. Not to mention shit like the water tower, baseball field, and parking lot making everything look extremely amateur. Maybe I'm wrong or in the minority here but this is the last tour course I'd ever travel to play at.

    If you're using OB territory as a way of getting a roller (or any shot) back in bounds, you know there's going to be people standing there. It's a natural hazard just like the bushes on the right side. That guy's not being paid to dodge discs (if at all). He's a known factor just like any other obstacle that exists, especially in off-fairway areas.
