As the song goes on, it sounds like he's reflecting on good memories he had with them. "You took away my friend" may be relating to life itself, and whatever reason it had in taking the life of them.
The voice crack on that last "You took away my friend, my buddy." Gets me everythime, especially knowing it's about (TW) losing a friend to suicide. The emotions are just so raw and you don't always get that anymore listening to newer music nowadays.
