Red tail hawks are usually not a problem. They are lazy hunters and prefer mice rats or even carrion to pigeon. How do I know? I had one in captivity for 3 months. I tried to feed him pigeons because I breed them. He ate one when he was really hungry but he loved rats. I had to buy then from the pet shop frozen for him. When he saw me coming with a rat he'd come right to me. After 3 months I let him go 10 miles up the road. I was afraid that if I let him go at my house he expect me to serve him rat every day and that was not cheap. .

@Blokky the hawk you got to look out for is the coopers hawk. they are very fast and like to hide in trees and bushes and unfortunately love to hunt pigeons :( you don't see them as much as the redtailed hawk because the prefer to wait in hiding before they sprint out and catch their prey. another one to look out for is the peregrine falcon which dive bomb from the sky and strike their prey at break neck speeds (i feel like i'm commenting on a nat geo wild doc LOL) and unfortunately their favorite prey is also the pigeon. You don't have to worry about redtails but watch out for those coopers hawks and peregrine's !
