How to Check Superheat and Subcooling!

  • In this HVAC Refrigerant Charging Video I Explain how to Check and Measure the Superheat and Subcooling Charging Processes for R22 and R410A freon. I show you most importantly how to know which one to use to check a freon refrigerant level in an air conditioning and heat pump system, what it means to have high superheated, low superheat high subcooling and low subcooling. I explain the other things that affect the superheat and subcooling temperature besides the actual refrigerant charge. I go over what the blue gauge is reading along with the red gauge, how to convert pressures to temperatures, how a charge could damage a compressor, and many other details. Supervision is needed by a licensed HVACR Tech while performing tasks as Experience and Apprenticeship garners Wisdom and Safety.

    You should do a video on charging a dry system after a compressor change. Adding oil, do you charge on liquid side or vapour side etc.. Everyone I talk to tells me something different

      Thanks for the idea! Hermetically sealed compressors have oil in them when you replace so you don't have to add more. thanks

    You explained superheat and subcooling as they relate to HVAC very well in this and another video. The compressor rating plate (in your video) provides the required degrees of subcooling for a TXV system. Do you ever adjust the readings taken at the compressor which is at ground level to the actual elevation of the TXV valve?
    Here is the reason I am asking this question. On my R410a systems the TXV's (in the attic) are ~20ft above the service valve connection at the compressor. Using the R410a liquid density on a 95°F summer day; the actual pressure at the TXV valve (due to the elevation change) would be 8.9 psi below the pressure reading at the high pressure service valve(port). If the ambient temperature was 95°F this change in pressure would result in about 2.1°F decrease in the saturation temperature of the R410a. There could also be a small temperature change from the 50 ft of liquid filled tubing routed through the hot attic and walls.
    Do you ever worry about this change in saturation temperature due to elevation when calculating the amount of subcooling?

      Well I started off with one of those slide calculators so I had no idea what I was doing if the numbers didn't match up. I had a really good teacher in who I was working under as a helper and during the end of my first year I was checking and adjusting my installations myself. I would not recommend people use those slide calculators though because they become a crutch and you are not learning what is happening in the system. Thanks eman3208!

    Nice gauges but not a fan of the R410a reading being on the very inside. I do prefer the analog gauges, even though many people gripe about them.

    How to take wet bulb temp on a ductless mini split ac system.pls guide

      A wet bulb temp measurement is taken of the indoor air in order to find the target superheat for single and two speed compressor ac units that have a fixed orifice. Minisplits have a txv and are typically VRF, thanks

    For the most part I have a good understanding of Super heat and sub cool. My question is, How is it possible to hook up your gauge set at your condenser and attach your temperature probe inches apart and be able to get your saturation temp and the line temperature with a temperature probe at the same spot in the system. When you are getting a superheated vapour at that location in the system. It just doesn't make sense to me. Why is the gauge showing the saturated temp at that spot and not the superheated vapour temperature. I'm hoping you can help explain why that is. Thanks.

    You mentioned possibly overcharging a system if the outside temps are low. I have read about partially blocking the condenser to bring the head pressure up to mimic a 95 degree day. Do you have any videos on how to properly do this procedure? Thanks.

      I do not as of yet and that would be if the system has a txv. That would be a good video to do though but you need to already know roughly what the pressures should be around on that unit to try to get close to the subcooling that it would actually have on a hotter day. I would still highly recommend going back during your spring check up time to confirm the charge.

    Let's just go with ol' R22.....If I may ask...What's the biggest difference in low pressure according to your low side gage? (analg./digi.) E.g. Lowest low side pressure reading you can think of you've ever gauged and highest low side pressure reading on gages for or set at R22? thanks for any input....just wondering....In my short career so far it's never been a big difference....

      Great Question! Low side can be correct depending on the wb temp and the outdoor temp. The magic range that I experience is anywhere between 62-83 psi normally. Are you only checking newer units that have been running or older units that maybe are broke when you get there and high humidity in the building upon start up? Thanks Adam!

      I'm currentl installing an used condenser. The crane operator on site told me I shouldn't need froen because he thinks he front seated the kings but, I asked if he pumped it down while doing so and he said no. New one for me so, Im anxious to get back soon as it warms up in the next 2-3 days about 40° "lol" to see how it looks....if they have no 22 and it's needed. Depending on how they want to handle it i may just put some 407c in the system....Had done this recently on a few older systems on a day job im no longer working for....no choice they needed it and wouldn't do it the way we see it done in the industry....But i have to be honest....it seemed to be wrkng just fine....at least for about 6 months....its been 4 years and im pretty sure its probably the same...

    We should ALL be using digital manifold gages, their readings are much more accurate..
    Those dial gages are NOT accurate enough... !
