Cut the very top off the capsule with a pair of scissors. Thanks for the information! Hard to say it's a useful product after seeing your results...after I ordered a kit lol.
Excellent Presentations and very thoroughly described and explained in depth. My local County Agent’s Office does a Soil Test for $10 and the results are very detailed. Since Nitrogen is likely to be soil element that could be depleted by heavy plant intake the Rapitest Nitrogen Test seems to be a good deal.
thanks, nice demo... pretty disheartening however to see that the potassium test was grossly under the lab results...makes you wonder how reliable this kit is if it could miss so badly.
I bought one of these things years ago. Thanks so much now I know how to use it.Also looking forward to the ph test, almost got one of the ph digital wands this year and forgot it was included it the kit I own.
This will be our first time testing our soil. We have noticed our harvest suffer over the past few years although we add compost every season. Due to the current situation we are in with Covid-19 we have decided to use the Rapitest soil kit over a lab. I do have one question. In the video you say to take multiple scoops of soil and put them in a bucket. Wouldn't you want to keep soil scoops separate if they are from different areas of your garden? Any advice is welcome. Robert hank you for this informational video! It was by far the best produced and easiest to follow. My fiancee and I look forward to reading your book Soil Science For Gardeners. Happy 2020 season! - Mark in Milwaukee
You can do it either way. Even if you want separate readings for different areas it is a good idea to get several scoops from one area and mix them up before testing. This gives a better average.
Garden Fundamentals this link just takes me to the “Rapitest Soil Test Kit..” this is the one I watched, but you mentioned in there that you had done the ph on a separate video.
Hmm your potassium looks like it settle all in the the top of the chamber. I suspect it would have shown a more appropriate reading if intergraded into the water fully.
@@Gardenfundamentals1 Oh yea, I use to use a PPM meter. Obviously chemistry works on a different principle. Bentonite clay is cat litter. Well the $1 cheap kind. But not everyone has a grinder so. :-)
I've got the same question, why recommend this product? Is there a kickback or something. We know that 1 test is correct, one is badly wrong, and the third has no comparison. 1 out of 3 hardly rates a stamp of approval.
@@kinjunranger140 Saying something is the best choice for a home test flirts with recommending, especially when not comparing it to other products who may have tested K properly. I was stumped when I heard that. If I go treating my yard for a K deficiency when it was perfectly fine then I may wreck my whole garden. As soon as I saw the test difference vs lab the product was a complete fail in my book and is not even up for consideration. I too trust the lab result given they provide PPM.
I don't see how you can endorse this product. You showed three tests and compared the results to a lab test. Comparison 1 was invalid because the lab gave no result to compare to. Test 2 agreed with the lab, while Test 3 disagreed greatly. You even said you believed the lab. So that is one agree and one disagree out of two tests. You must be getting a kickback.
I sometimes question the labs as well. I mean the controls in the lab have to be spot on as well to get accurate tests.
Thank you very much for the info. frustrating that the results were off from the lab test. I think I will return this product.
Yea same here thats a big difference to much of a difference to trust

Th ank you for that evaluation. Taking the mystery out of doing something like this gives us hackers the confidence to attempt this on our own.
I agree! I bought this test and felt confused until watching this video.
You can also use paper towels to remove solids then let it sit

It is not very reliable.

I will be doing some videos on the pH probes - better to use a chemical kit.
Wow that soil is so rich, try gardening in SoCal… ;)
our county extension office does the testing for free with free advice on how to correct any problems.
vast majority of places don't have free. Mine is $10 - 15 based on what you want.
Thanx4sharing, thanx4caring!!
this is exactly what i needed, thanks so much for this video!
Great information.
curious (i have this test) Why do you put water in the large part of the container?
You correct for any color in your soil water. If you water already has color it would impact the test result unless you correct for it.
Useful video for Farmers and well as testiing labs.
Thanks
I had a lot of trouble with this and found it confusing. I don’t know why there were two chambers.
Sooooo helpful thank you
Thanks for the review!

@@Gardenfundamentals1 thank you for the advice!
Just curious. Results you seem to say we’re inaccurate. Why would you recommend it then?
I did not recommend it - it is a product review. But even it can be useful if you know why you are using it.
I looked through your previous videos and couldn’t find the one where you show how to use the ph test

What about well water?

Maybe - but it would not dissolve even with vigorous shaking - I am a chemist.
So if k was off then how can I verify the needs of my lawn
These kits are not reliable enough. Get a real soil test by a lab.
@@Gardenfundamentals1 labs tests are expensive do you have any other suggestions
2:55 Salt?? why not use bentonite clay? Salt will add more desalved salts to the test.
everyone has salt, but almost nobody has bentonite and the salt adds sodium, which is not being measured

The Rapitest that you held up at the beginning of this helpful video included a test for PH. Was the ph test not included in this comparison?
It will be done in a separate video - the short answer is that the pH test is not very accurate.
@@Gardenfundamentals1 where is the video for the pH? I didn't see it, or a link in the description of this one.
Where is the pH test vid?

no sure why you are recommending this if the potassium result is totally wrong and you can't verify the accuracy of the nitrogen test
