The fifth one is on the list was STRATOLINER S.E.
but an overly anxious customer tried to crawl under the gate before we opened,so I had to cut it short 🙄.
The short list is:
Temple
Whippet
Saxon
Asher
Stratoliner
Our biggest sellers for 2019
for WESTERN hats:
Open Road 6X
Open Road Royal Deluxe
Rancher 6X
Arlo
Dune
I’m sure you know ,but Tom Landry ,long time head coach of the Dallas Cowboys was well known for wearing a Saxon hat also
I had to end it abruptly, an overly anxious customer was lifting up the gate, and we were closed.. I had to get rid of him, with a smile,of course.. there will be a part two!
Nice video my friend
Well done Kevin. Great options. Whiskey!
I Love Fedora's 💎🎩💯
Kevin is fidgety as hell, but knows his stuff.
The older videos I had serious coffee overdose issues, I was kind of a workaholic..
these days I’m…. Better.😂
@@quadrogong1111 You do a great job. I hope you are appreciated.
@@quadrogong1111 yeah, you are definitely hyper in this video, it is like you have taken powders or something. I hope you are o.k.
When you compare the Whippet with the Temple the only difference is the crown: Whippet teardrop - Temple centerdent. This leads me to the question: When you compare 2 hats and everything is the same except the crown what is the dirrerence in style? Is the teardrop cooler? Or more classical? Or more formal? Or more casual? Or what? I dont ask for the technical issues like: Wich is deeper or so - just about the style.
That's like thirty questions,Tom..
The difference are more than what u mentioned..
1.The raw edge vs bound edge.
2. Center crease vs teardrop..
3.Temple was a wider ribbon,
4.Temple has a bigger brim,
5. Temple has a "dimensional Brim"
(2 3/8" x 2 5/8")
6. Whippet is thicker felt
Lot of differences.
As far as which is casual,dressy..
That is all opinion. It differs from person to person.
Color will have more to do with it.
The whippet is lower in appearance, but it is also deeper..
Temple looks slightly higher in the crown, but it's also less deep.
Don't get the Temple if u intend to get it wet ..
If u get it,no steam, no rain, no snow, no spray.
they're very unpredictable in rain, some are fine, some have brims that curl up..
if u intend to get it wet, just skip the temple..
I have from JJ's ( thanks to Kevin's expert showcasing ) a Seville in Burgundy, Stetson Temple's in Caribou and Black. I wanted a Cyrus in purple, but it doesn't look like these are coming back in. I like the way Kevin demoed the Saxon in this video. I think a Saxon in Navy would be wonderful for this winter.
I’m not sure about the Cyrus, you’d have to ask Aida the owner, or call during a weekday 12-4 and I can ask her personally. 800-622-1911
Kevin, THANK YOU!
One day I will go to the shop. I like the fedora hat very much ...from Thailand
Thanks so much!!!
Just bought a few days ago my Stetson Temple. I can´t wait to use it on my adventures!
Cool I have a mink colored(brown) one,I wore it in today's Video,enjoy!

@@quadrogong1111 Thanks! I received it a week ago, and it's perfect! Also in mink colour :D
Great video as always Kevin!!!
Happy Holidays to you and your family!!!
Thanks 😉you too!!
How come Stetson have discontinued so many hats? I have been trying to get a Chatham but they are all dried up and also all those in the video except the Whippet and Temple
Thank you for your video it's been very educational and descriptive
Excuse my ignorance but I read and heard that the hats should be store upside down on the crown. Contrary of what I see in your display 🤔. I am confused, please clarify that for me. Thank you
We can’t display them upside down, that wouldn’t work, obviously, nobody could see the hats..
so the last owner devised a system where the hats lay on three, thin, polished brass bars,
so there’s minimal contact. They don’t lay on a shelf, just balancing on 3 thin poles..it’s not the worst thing in the world, the main reason is that folks GRAb it by the pinch every time when it’s stored on its brim, which grinds a hole in the felt prematurely, which isn’t a problem at the shop
@@quadrogong1111 Thank you! God bless! 👍
Hey Kevin, I really wish I would have found your channel two weeks ago! Today my 'Fourdora' order arrived. I botched my size something awful! All four are Jaxon and only the 100 wool felt one fits! I stopped by the shop and picked up three of those adhesive sweatband/size reducer things. I wound up having to put all three of them into the grey one with the 2&1/2 inch brim, two in the front and one in the back! I plan to pork pie the remaining two, a second black one and a bright red pimp lid, and will sort them out in good time. Sorry my first visit to the shop was on your day off. Next time! :)
Stop by Wednesday to Sunday if u need more help w them,
(mon-tue are my days off)
Looking so much to get the Asher When you get it again. Thnx for great videos you are the reason why i ordered at JJ. 😀🎩
Wow, really? Thanks, I appreciate your patronage and viewership 😎
I don't think my boss knows how many orders my videos actually drum up,
If u ever have a free moment & feel like expressing your appreciation, u can drop a Yelp or Google review.im sure my boss would like to know that😁
plus..
Xmas bonus time is aproachin'😉 thanks for the cool compliments and for your order!!
@@quadrogong1111 ,,,you're the hat authority Kevin. Looking back at your old videos...learning so much about hats. Hemp Asher will be perfect for the heat down here at South Padre Island, Texas!
Beautiful hats. Great video. Can you tell me if the Stetson Saxon is beaver or rabbit? The Saxon should be safe if it gets rained on? My wool Temple got pretty beat up in the rain.
Saxon is rabbit and it’ll do fairly well in the rain, just flip the brim up as u w
K home, and store it upside down , brim flipped up,away from heat afterwards
Why is the Saxon softer than the Temple if they're both rabbit fur felt?
They’re not, every hat is different, it’s just chance, some are hard some are soft, supposed to be the same stuff, it could be shopworn but it’s just chance,
Nice!! Is the Saxon hat the one that Kevin Costner wore in the Untouchables?? 🤔
VERY close. Maybe a vintage hat. Those costumes depts have boxes of vintage hats, they change bands, distress them, airbrush dirt on to them.. I'd guess it's vintage . But it's nearly the same. Good eye😁
Great video Kevin !!!
Big fan, love your videos. I have a graphite Stetson Hampton that I purchased year's ago. It has Sovereign stamped on the inside of the hat band. Do you know what type of fur felt is used in this hat?
Rabbit
@@quadrogong1111 Thanks
@@quadrogong1111 I have 2 Sovereigns and a Inwood that I bought 35? years ago and 2 Mercurys bought 8 years ago. I believe they're all discontinued now and they have 2" brims except the Inwood is 1 3/4". Teardrop crowns and I bought them in Seattle at Byrnie Utz a hat store that closed their doors 4 years ago after starting up at a Downtown location in the 1940s! 😭
I love you said fender and gibson :)
Kevin, I have a thin face and generally look good in a pork pie but was thinking about a saxon. Good idea or do you suggest something else?
Exellent Kevin Always Nice!
I've looked through the inventory several times. When I see something I like it is sold out or not in a size that might fit. Can you tel me when the new inventory will be coming in?
Rick Croucher we got killed at Xmas, mobbed around the clock, every day, we just got in a few cases of Stetsons, but the huge, huge order won’t make it until after the holidays, hang in there, hundreds upon hundreds of Stetsons are on the way, should have arrived, they’re late, btw always call the shop during shop hours,in case something is out of stock, those numbers on the system aren’t always accurate. 800 622 1911
I spent Christmas Day watching your vids. Thanks for the informative entertainment.
@@rickcroucher Every hat that Kevin promotes sells out. Got to act quickly after a new video.
So much valuable info
Arthur Soto ...thank u!!
I almost bought a Saxon until I learned the felt is so thin the brim goes wonky with small amounts of rain or heavy humidity. living in a rainy humid place I decided to avoid Stetson dress hats entirely. Akubra does not have such issues. Can anyone who actually knows, tell me if that is an issue with Selentino hats?
I was most disappointed to learn that about Stetson dress hats. I might eventually get a Saxon anyway because my grandfather, who introduced me to hat wearing, wore Saxons for years. Now, Living in Vancouver BC, I might never wear it.
I always wear Black and Blue jeans and rubber shoes always wearing black and Grey plain t shirts. What color do you recommend? I would love to have a Fedora. On a budget
Hard to say, it’s mostly a taste issue. You need to look in the mirror and like how it looks on you. Offhand I’d say go with grey, or maybe black if you like a dark hat.
@@quadrogong1111 Thank you so much
@@quadrogong1111 Thank you so much for your time, sir. I am finally comfortable with choosing a hat. god bless
Excellent video as always. I ordered the Arlo and the Temple from your store last week. Is it true wool felt hats lose their shape in 3-5 years and can’t be reshaped very easily?
Nope. It's impossible to estimate how many years. Let's say
If a guy wears it 5x a week, it lasts 3-5 yrs, what about the guy wearing it twice a week on weekends? It'll last 6-10 years?
Fur felt can be reshaped very well, as many times as you want. Wool felt can be reshaped maybe a couple of times and doesn't respond nearly as well to reshaping, but they also cost half the price of fur felt, so it's like .relative.
U will get more longevity usually, but there's shit fur felt too. Thin stuff.. sometimes a sturdy wool litefelt crusher is more durable than a fragile, thin, fur felt travel hat.. in general if u care for your hats, wool it fur will last u 20-25 years at least, If u are tough on your hats, both materials can last you 3-5 years. It's more about how u treat them.the old timers have wool lite felts for 20 years and they look new, while a young punk will bring a beaver hat to burning man,EDM music festivals and his Bros will sleep on it all the way home.. that hat will last 3-5 years, and so will his wool hat. Too many parameters to mark HOW LONG they last, but don't worry too much about it, stay away from Chinese hats if u can, hats with paper sweatbands, or ones that have problems right off the shelf.. otherwise, buy what u feel good in.. whatever makes u happy.. and don't worry about the felt content too much.. lot of it is performance, some of it is marketing hype..
I know the one I want i can't decide on color. I wear brown boots Redwings 90% of the time. I am leaning toward brown hat but my shirts and jacket sweater etc are navy and gray. I can't decide between brown or gray hat? Whats you opinion on this. I have always had boots and hats the same color. Iam old school simple older guy.
Hmm, I think u should match it up to your general look..nothing wrong w matching the boots, that’ll look cool. Think about it.. Make your choice count, you might have this hat for life.. brown will look a little earthy, slightly casual..and it makes the hat look less business-like, less of a “suit” hat.. any color like that will be good for you, it’s hard to say without looking at you directly.. but I’d probably suggest the Mink brown from Stetson, I think it’ll go with jeans, your boots, the sweaters.. it’ll be versatile and casual..
or something like a beige with a brown band. Like a tawny Temple , Asher or Whippet. Another color you can consider is Sage. they make an olive green with brown trim, like the premier Stratoliner, www.jjhatcenter.com/products/the-premier-stratoliner-by-stetson?variant=5279940100
(it can be shaped any you want, but a teardrop, or an open road crease are the two standard requests)
But yes, I agree, earth tones..brown should do just fine.
@@quadrogong1111 Mink brown yes I agree. Thanks bro.👍
Whippet is number 1 and the coolest.
Hi Kevin great video. I like the up brim low crown look. In your opinion what's better whippet or Saxon? Thx
Equally as good, one is a large brimmed hat, like a Bogart type.. the whippet
And the Saxon is a smaller brim, more understated hat, like Sinatra..
they’re both great. I wouldn’t limit yourself to Stetson brand though, there are many brands making the same styles with much thicker , more reliable felt,
instead of the Saxon, I’d do the Brant www.jjhatcenter.com/collections/felt-hats/products/the-brant-by-magill
Or maybe the Madison by Selentino, and instead of the Whippet I’d do the Hamilton by Selentino, or the Stylemaster by Akubra.
The Stetson fedoras are classic, but in the last few years they’ve gotten very, very thin and are easily susceptible to brim curling when they get wet, or even just steamed. So, I’d say..keep yourself open to other brands too
@@quadrogong1111 Thank you so much . That is so helpful!!
Hey Kevin, I found a custom hatmaker down here in Mexico to make me a beaver hat. What are your thoughts on beaver for a wide brim(4inch)?
U mean a western hat I guess? That's a big brim, if u are used to full sized westerns it'll be fine.
Yeah more of a western style. Thanks man. Always enjoy learning and watching your videos here.
Just found your channel. Nice to get some knowledge on hats.
How do you think about sizing? Think you said you like to run your hats a bit big...?
I’m 59cm (7 3/8) and planning on buying the Saxon or something similar.
How do you think I should think about sizing?
Take care!
Just buy 7 3/8
Thanks!
Can I get one of those through online shopping?
website is www.jjhatcenter.com but there is a Huge Stetson shortage this year, nobody has any Stetson western hats , it will be a little while, the company is totally out of them now
I’m looking for a Stetson fedora but I feel overwhelmed by the options. In the sense that I don’t know the differences between them. I love the Temple but I have found a “Regent” and “Frederick” models that look the same. Can you explain the differences? Do the models differ by brim size and material used? I’ve tried to look up info on the regent model but it’s like it’s dead to Stetson. Thank!
Never heard of a regent, never..probably introduced and discontinued quickly.the Frederick is a cheap, wool version of the Saxon, we used to sell it, it barely bares any resemblance to a Stetson at all, as far as the feel, texture or type of felt..it’s a budget version of their short brim hats, I don’t care for it much.
I think a better alternative to the Frederick is The Blues Fedora by Capas Headwear in NY, it looks the same, but the felt is better,it’s $125. And it rolls up for travel too, u can pit it in your coat pocket. As far as nicer hats, the Stetson line has many nice reliable hats..
www.jjhatcenter.com
For short brims I love the Stetson Asher, it’s insanely popular, stylish, modern and clean looking...yet classical.
For wider brims, I like the Stetson Temple, I wear a brown one myself. but with that long brim and raw edge, it is not a rain hat..
The Stetson Saxon is a medium brim, wider than the Asher, shorter than the temple, with a very reliable, strong brim. I LOVE it.
The Whippet is also a fantastic wider hat like the temple, but we are waiting for them now..
The Frederick though?.. it looks nice in the photos, but doesn’t wear well. It is wool, and all the others hats mentioned here are fur.
They’re made of 100% rabbit fur, which doesn’t shrink, and it can be reshaped easily at the hat shop, for free..
but the Frederick won’t give u much longevity... if u want to spend less, I’d go for The Blues Fedora at JJ Hats, it looks identical to the Frederick, but the felt is nicer
@@quadrogong1111 thank you so much! You sold me on the Stetson Saxon as my first fedora. But it looks like yal are out of stock at the moment on the Saxon in caribou!
i love you friend.
Im 20, wanna dress like michael corleone. No *** earrings, no damn tatoos. Just like the gentlemen in the 30s
Kevin what would be a budget friendly fedora for someone new to hat wearing?
The Blues Fedora (smaller 2" brim) or the Atlantic (classic, larger brim) they're rollable for travel too! www.jjhatcenter.com
@@quadrogong1111 🙏🏼Thank you!
@@BEARDED_VATO if u want to look at something slightly higher end, that just happens to be about the highest rated, most rainproof, longest lasting fedora on Earth.. go with the Akubra Stylemaster
It's around $50 more or so,but it's literally my favorite hat out there,as far as quality.. at any price.
It'll last a lifetime, and take rain and snow like a champ too!
@@quadrogong1111 Iam gonna check it out, i am 7 1/8 on western felt hats, my guess is gonna be Medium on a fedora?
@@quadrogong1111 ,,,o k a y...another hat I got to get!
Hey Kevin, Do yall carry the Stetson Selby?
No, that’s the same as a Saxon with no pinches and a 1/8” shorter brim, few do. Nobody has those now, but we have a hat that’s exactly like it and MUCH better quality, called the Selentino Madison that I’d suggest much more, the felt is way more reliable and thicker, higher grade . Same exact specs, way nicer quality than late model Stetson fedoras in my opinion www.jjhatcenter.com/collections/selentino/products/the-madison
@@quadrogong1111 Thank you I'll take a look.
what is the height of the crown? Thx
I mentioned five hats.. so I, not sure which one, all the crown heights are listed on www.jjhatcenter.com
Im not usually too interested in crown heights because I can lower a crown in thirty seconds w our steamer, nothing here with a high crown though, they’re all pretty average
Whiskey!
🤠👊
Any affordable replacement for the Saxon?
The Blues Fedora www.jjhatcenter.com/products/the-blues-fedora?variant=244735070 an awesome hat, u can roll it for commuting, restaurants etc and it’s rugged, lightweight, flexible..soft…. Always call if it says sold out, I know for a fact tha these aren’t sold out we are out of a lot of mediums and larges because we had a busy week, but these hats come in every 10-14 days or so, sometimes weekly. They’re a New York based brand,so we can literal get them overnight

Looking for a Stingy brim fadora, like the one in my profile pic
we have a few things, but the felt season starts mid September, it’ll all be straws now, the stingiest thing we have is the Stetson Morgan with a 1 3/8” brim, (pretty small at slightly under 1.5”)
