Interesting story. Very tragic that she and both her sons killed themselves. What grief they must have suffered. She realized a lot of her dreams from such humble beginnings but the fast life and the scandal swallowed her up. RIP to them all.
She was still in the wrong. He wasn't attacking her. She waited until he was vulnerable, then killed him. Most likely fueled by alcohol. It's not like divorce wasn't on the table in 1955.
No one who knew her would agree with you. Ann's mother was mentally ill. Ann's younger brother burned to death in a fire, traumatizing them Ann was unstable as well, and took a plethora of prescription medications. How ridiculous to blame her highly respected Mother in Law.
That doesn’t automatically make her a killer. Her mother in law didn’t respect her own son’s choice of wife. It would freak me out hearing someone trying to break into my home in the dead of night. Mother in law sounds a nasty piece of s hit.
When I heard Ann’s name, the first thing I thought was that I was sure she was one of Capote’s Swans and sure enough. I recently finished an audiobook on all the Swans and I finished it gaining more insight into these ladies like Ann, but also what a despicable vile nasty person Capote was, seemingly basking in their glow like some fort of parasite. I’ll not deny his talent, but for the women who thought themselves close friends, he betrayed their confidences with what we got of that story if his. And Ann barely knew him according to your report and he still managed to leave carnage. I feel bad for Ann and her sons, and I’ve lost a lot of respect I had for Capote, whom I used to see on Johnny Carson when I was growing up. Thank you for highlighting Ann, and subtly showing what a vicious person Capote could be.
poor woman. on the outside she had everything. Looks, money, kids , marriage. and really she had nothing. poor soul. poor kids. rest in peace, all of them. and T. Capote, what a piece of work HE was. great as always, FL.
What an incredible real life story! You have told it very well (and with impartiality) . The photos are excellent in illustrating the scenes. I can't believe that I never heard of this case. I was born exactly a year after that shooting, so I guess that by the time I could read, it was no longer newsworthy. Thank you for presenting another amazing story that has been forgotten. Well done!!
What an unpleasant, spiteful, vicious creature Capote was. There was absolutely no reason for him to write his poisonous filth, other than self aggrandisement and feathering his nest. He was utterly vile
Hello Forgotten Lives. It's lovely having another spectacular upload from your channel. Something to look forward to every time I come around to watch. 😊
A perfect example of the timeworn axiom stating money cannot buy happiness. Often, those who appear to have everything experience the deepest struggles. In some ways, we're seeing this play out in the current social "cancelling" of celebrity culture as many revolt against the idolatry of entertainers and influencers. Stars - they're just like us, yes? What a tragic tale forever affecting so many lives in just seconds. Thank you for telling a story I've never heard, and telling it well.
Dominick Dunne's novel, "The Two Mrs. Grenvilles " is a roman à clef of the Woodward case. It was made into a miniseries starring Ann Margaret. (Fixed typo,)
I read that book many years ago. A fascinating read, but at the time I didn't know it was inspired by a true story, I learned it only recently... a fascinating book for a tragic story.
I didn't know that I must watch it again as I saw it when it first came out & loved it. It's a shame they don't make mini series anymore, they were some of the best story type productions ever made. So many of them out did any A list movie ever released.
Capote seems like a toad/troll of a man, considering his infatuation with killers, (ex: In Cold Blood), this story is disheartening to hear about. He was a gossip monger, who from what I've read and watched about him, just slithered into people's lives as a "friend", and turn around to make sesationalized tee- hee, ha-ha statements, editorials, or books about "fictional characters". Sorry about my rant, but your channel is brilliant!!!
I could see it going both ways - being an accident or a murder - given Ann was a heavy drinker and addicted to prescription drugs. On the night of the incident she could have been drunk and confused, and though shooting a shadow in the hallway (that could easily have been a family member or a maid) was the most reasonable thing to do. Or she and William could have been fighting and she shot him in a drunken rage, later realizing what she had done and using the string of burglaries as an excuse. I'm also not 100% convinced the man who confessed to being in the house the night of the murder was actually telling the truth: maybe he was just looking for his 15 minutes of fame, or maybe he thought he could put his hands on some easy money from the Woodwards by confirming Ann's story. False confessions are not uncommon when talking about famous cases.
According to the evidence, the rifle contained shot that would normally not kill a human. Hitting the husband in the temple seems like a freak accident that would be very hard to do deliberately. Would she have even known that was the way to kill him? It sounds implausible that killing him was a deliberate act. I think the jury's verdict was correct - a tragic accident.
It's usually children who suffer the most, through the turmoil of parents. I'm not sure who the mother in law was, before her own marriage, if she came from wealth, or what kind of mother she was, but when someone is generally nasty to another, my sentiment is, "it takes one to know one".
Dominic Dunne wrote a novel based on this case. It was called The Two Mrs. Grenvilles, and was made into a miniseries that if I remember right starred Ann-Margret as the Ann Woodward character.
William Woodward was not "a horse trainer." He was the leading breeder and owner of top racehorses for decades. He was chairmain of the Manufacturers Hanover Bank ( now Chase.) President of the Jockey Club, the governing board of horse racing, which in those days was the most attended sport in America.
@DianeC. Forgotten Lives and Mortis are brothers in real life. Mortis has an awesome channel, just look for "Mortis Media" 🙌 They also have another brother, who is in the same business: "History Profiles" 🙌 You'll love them as well! 💯% 👍
@Forgotten Lives: The notification came to me saying: Forgotten Lives and Mortis 😮 Lol After i listened the video, i noticed that wasn't none collab with Mortis, but he did uploaded yesterday too, after you 😊 Maybe that's why You Tube sent me the notification like that, who knows? Thank you FLives, i enjoyed the video
@kimberlyowens5496 I don't think I saw that one . However, I remember the one about the woman who was trapped at the foot of the statue during the University of Texas sh00tings in 1966.
It's funny to think about which of today's celebrities will be a topic of "Forgotten Lives" in forty years. Cher comes to mind. I think her music will have been forgotten in forty years and she had, and still has, such an interesting life.
I can't read him. I've tried. And I read almost everything. Something just doesn't feel right. I just get a ugh feeling..lol. no reason, I don't really know anything about him. Like when u meet someone and just get that feeling?
Answered Prayers should have been titled “In Cold Blood”, but Capote had already used it for his previous book. He had a pattern of insinuating himself into Perry & the Swans’ lives only to exploit their lives for his own literary gain.
The two Mrs granville's with Ann-Margret I think was based on that, they made it a miniseries it's pretty good it had to come out either in the late eighties or early nineties.
From what I understand, she use to go with her husband’s father, then turn around and married the man’s son, that stunt made her look bad in front of the high society people, Her future mother in-law said that Anne had no style, a polite way of saying that Anne had no class.
I can’t be bothered about stars from the 30’s and 40’s who ruined their lives following the American Dream of fame and money. She was a gold digger and I’m not surprised her mother in law disliked her. She was alround bad news and her marriage was never going to end well.
There are many inaccurate statements in this video. Far from villifying Ann, Elizabeth Woodward protected her to prevent the Spectacle of an OJ like circus trial. Ann's story was she heard a noise, grabbed her shotgun and didn't call out "who goes there?" It could have been one of her young sons in the hallway. The shooting was not "a mistake." It was either negligent homicide or outright murder. Either way, she escaped prison because Elsie Woodward called in favors.
I think that you can stand to gain a lot from someone’s death and unfortunate accidents can still happen. I’m not saying she’s innocent I’m just annoyed that so often this is the case and so many people have probably lost everything to these types of narratives.
Dominic Dunne wrote a novel based on this case. It was called The Two Mrs. Grenvilles, and was made into a miniseries that if I remember right starred Ann-Margret as the Ann Woodward character.
I feel very sorry for her kids who I think suffered the most.
What a sad, sad tale. Thank you for showcasing these “forgotten” lives!
My pleasure!
The Swans on Hulu is a great series.
I don't think you ought to say that Capote's writings were revelations. More like malicious gossip, which resulted in several deaths.
I'd say both are true. No one was innocent here, including Anne.
Interesting story. Very tragic that she and both her sons killed themselves. What grief they must have suffered. She realized a lot of her dreams from such humble beginnings but the fast life and the scandal swallowed her up. RIP to them all.
Pittsburgh middle class is " humble beginnings"?!? Wow, really? Is the air thinner up there😂
Truman Copote was a vile evil gay man who would pull any body down to his sort of lowlife that he lived !

Hello!!! Thanks for this story. Guess you could say money can't buy you Happiness...Nice Video !!!...Your fan&friend from USA...🇺🇸🦋
Wow. So interesting. The interconnection between the high socials is mind boggling
How sad did the boys committed suicide. Did it have anything to do with that hateful grandmother of theirs?
The ruin of their mother by Capote may have played a part, but then again, maybe not.
Probably the whole family
Was not expecting my hometown. Woah

Dominick Dunne’s book, “The two Mrs Greenvilles” is an excellent read.
