  • STOP PRESS! The Duke Banjo Uke company has since changed hands and has re-launched with a new owner, also from New Zealand under the control of Jamie Houston from Wellington. For that reason I cannot guarantee that this review still stands as it did - I believe the production process hasn't changed so there is no reason for the new models to differ, but my review model was one of the originals. Sorry to have to provide that caveat, but it's only fair to my readers.

      Hi Barry - just to put peoples minds at ease, the new production run of DUKE10 banjoleles was made by the same people that manufactured the last batch, so the quality of the instrument is every bit as good, with the addition of side fret markers, which were missing off the last batch. The other difference that I should point out is that the tension hooks are not riveted on like they are on the sample you are reviewing. They are now attached with a nut and bolt as you can see in the photos here: www.dukeuke.com/products/duke10-tenor-banjo-ukulele-solo-pack
      Thanks for your positive review Barry :-) I know you would be just as happy with one of the current batch as you were with the last batch. Jamie Houston - new owner of Duke Banjo Ukuleles.

    Would you consider reviewing the Goodtime Tenor? It's a tenor version of the deering banjo uke you reviewed with a bigger head

      GotAUkulele the Goodtime company is run by Scientologists who promote and donate to the cult. It’s a shame! My friend loves his but didn’t know the story behind the company. Just for information. People should be aware of what they’re buying to make an informed decision.

    Sad to see the company is for sale. I hope it stays in production as it is an excellent instrument. Got my duke 10 a couple of weeks ago. It was stuck in customs for about two weeks and cost me about £30.00 in duty to get it delivered :-( . I love it but sadly as others have said there are no side dots and the pearl markers on the fret board are difficult to see. My major like is the sound ...it is so banjo-like and I'm madly trying to learn clawhammer. thanks for your review it helped my decision to buy.

      Hi Colin - this is Jamie Houston, new owner of Duke Banjo Ukuleles. Just found your comments and thought I would let you know that the new batch we produced (that started shipping worldwide in December 2018) all have side fret markers :-)

    I ordered a Duke 10 online and it took about 2 weeks to arrive. Note that it was drop shipped from China. It says designed in New Zealand, but it seems to be made in China. Good quality though with two exceptions. The tuners are just ok (ish). They work. but stick and jerk. The Bridge came with no slots in it at all, but a file solved that in a minute or two. The saddest thing though is no side markers...sigh. I guess you got the one they made with those for your review. Overall happy with the Duke 10 and still seems to be a good value for what you get.

    • @GotAUkulele
      @GotAUkulele  6 лет назад +1

      Yes - they are assembled in China - that's just logistics to keep the price down. Many many ukuleles are. Yes, I didn't massively like the feel of the tuners. Shame about the side dots going - such an easy thing for them to add. Silver Sharpie is your friend!

    • @jeffgill6205
      @jeffgill6205 6 лет назад +1

      I never thought of a silver sharpie, I was using adhesive paper dots that just fell off when it was least convenient. Bought one and it works great. its that small things. I would like to pass on a comment about the fantastic customer service that I got from Ed Ackman. The pot of my Duke 10 started to separate at one of the seams. I contacted Ed and I sent him a photo of it. He had a replacement instrument sent out that same day. Very impressed with that!

    • @GotAUkulele
      @GotAUkulele  6 лет назад +1

      Yeah - fair play - all brands get issues as it’s hard to check every eventuality. Ed is a good guy!

    There's a $55 off today that ends on May 18th at midnight. In addition to the waived shipping cost. Ugh! I'm interested because I want a quality instrument and yes, I'm a sadist that needs to AMP my banjolele! Ma we he he he ha ha!

    I would like to buy the one for $30.00 instead. I never play the banjolele, before I put 500 in a banjolele, I want to know if I can learn how to play.

      @GotAUkulele  6 лет назад +1

      you really won't get a banjolele that is playable for $30!

    Did it arrive set up or did you do it yourself?

    • @GotAUkulele
      @GotAUkulele  7 лет назад +2

      Set up at the nut - but banjos get delivered with the saddle lying flat to avoid damage. It's just a case of setting it upright then putting it in the right place (same distance from top of 12th fret to the nut). Easily done and checked with a tuner - when you get the same notes at 12th fret as you do played open - it's in right place.

      Marga H I don’t think they are in production any more

    • @Margareth20648
      @Margareth20648 6 лет назад

      Oh, no! I son't want to buy a $300 bajolele yet. I don't even know if I will be able to play it! I purchase a $100 chinese, but the tune would not hold, actually, I could not even tune it! The string came all loose at first, and I thought this was normal, and then I tightened a little bit, and add the bridge. I could not tune the A string, and it. I found out it was because it was loose at the bottom. And, it snapped all together. Did not break, just become undone. Do you have any suggestions?

    • @BarryMaz
      @BarryMaz 6 лет назад

      Marga H I’m afraid with banjos you really need to spend more than you would expect. They look simple but cheap ones are usually pretty terrible.

    I like it. It’s not too brash for a banjo.

    Side dots--hooray! That arm rest doesn't look a very good fit though. Hope they get it fixed on the production models.

      Feels fine on the arm though, and that's what matters!
