Great job! I like that you addresses the costs, and the reason on your building technique. I made a rain barrel with screen much like yours and it has been going over 10 years and No, my shingles nor bird poop are an issue as your plants and the dirt work well at breaking that stuff down. Thanks for sharing
Good job, your manner of precise instruction is just what's needed, not everyone was reared on a farm, working with as a mechanic or handyman. I did grow up on a farm, and I can appreciate the effort you put into your project, fact, I'm right proud of ya. You just keep posting this type instruction there are a lot of folks who would be lost attempting to do what you accomplished, especially young ones. You must be a teacher at heart. ;-)
The only video so far I've seen that dealt with both subject matters I'm looking for: Raised bed vegetable gardening & rainwater harvest. Thanks for posting your video. Great job.
I was most impressed by the 3 stage compost area. Great design. It's nice to have additional space to start new piles while the older pile finishes cooking.
Binky's Garden Crockets victory garden book---the original one--has the plans and is still one of the best gardening books out there, except for the use of chemicals back then
This is an awesome setup. I know there are many ways to accomplish this - I am thankful you shared your concept and approach and information. Look forward to future posts.
Very impressive setup! I really like your dual rain barrel setup, and the rack they sit in. You do nice work! Hope you have a great garden again this year!
putting some type of first/wash purge would be a good idea, pivot diverter in the system before it gets into your barrels. That way toxins and dirt from the first flush from the roof would be not introduced to your water storage system. Over all your system and simple approach, along with knowledge and 'get er done' mentality is appreciated. Thumbs up Bra!.
Nice presentation thanks. As an experienced deck builder, I would advise against using hangers (L Brackets) or screws or bolts to bear significant load. The two full barrels are almost 1000 lb., and tipping or hanger failure can result in severe injury or damage. I just completed a 3- barrel stand. I poured 30" concrete footers with embedded L-bolts, and attached 2'x6x6 posts on each corner using Z-MAX galvanized footer stands and a nut on the L-bolt. . Here is the trick - don't HANG stringers on the posts- SET them on the posts. I set a 6x6 on 2 posts on each side, drilling straight down into the posts and using a 10" lag bolt on each corner. Now the weight is entrirely born by 6x6PT over 30in concrete ( and the z-max adpater which is made for this weight). No weight or born by screws, or hangers. I then added "X" boards on all four sides, which greatly adds rigidity and resitance to shear forces (toppling it over). I like your tilted 2x4s as barrel supports. I'm going to look at something like that now. THanks!
this guy must be in sales, he speaks easily to the camera. I agree his garden may need more sunlight, but he's enjoying himself, being productive, and that's huge. I'd love to see his garden later in the season. 110 gallons might not be all you'd need, but it goes a good way. Otherwise his trees would get it all.
Excellent video, Chris! I have an urban Canadian garden of the same size and you've given me many great ideas for developing a small space cheaply and neatly. Thanks!
Thank You for your information, I'll have to make some adjustments, but it gives me some ideas for 8 to 10 barrels I am using for my personal water system. I was looking for a safe stand that would hold all the water. I'll probably stack 3 and but them higher off the ground to connect to a hose, since I don't have traditional running water. Thank You.
Excellent design and build. With your wooden frame enclosing the barrels, it allows you to build a surrounding to enclose the structure. Keeping your water out of the sunlight would keep it cooler in temperature.
Smart guy! Heed his warning about making the frame heavy enough to hold all that weight. With 110 gallons of water, the water just weighs 918.5 pounds. So be careful out there building this. Compost tea works wonders on your veggies and other plants. Fish emulsion is a good fertilizer too. Tomatoes love it! I love your garden space. Very nice!
5/5 and fav'd. Thank you very much for the invoice at the end. That alone makes this video a very good learning tool. I appreciate you sharing your ideas.
What happens with that rain barrel system if the rain barrels are full? Doesn't the excess rain just run directly down by the foundation? That would not be good. Don't you need to divert excess water away from the foundation somehow?
An added thought for rain collection: When using white barrels, paint them an opaque color or cover them so that sunlight cannot light the water and grow algae inside your barrels.
Any algae is fertilizer for the garden...my Dad had 12 open barrels next to the lean tu at home. Rain water off the roof of the building filling the barrels up. Frogs jumped in and laid eggs. The tax pols ate the algae and the water became fertilizer for the garden that was next to the barrels.
Nice work. Love your garden. Neat rainwater tanks. Down here in the driest inhabited continent on earth, rainwater tanks are a common feature. Google "rainwater tanks Australia" and you'll find a lot of useful design ideas and information. Have fun, and happy gardening!
I liked this, it is right on. Are you easy to live with? You are totally organised, I like to work on it sometime but like everything get the concrete base level right first up than no more cutting off that much! Great to pass all this on. I am still getting there, but than this is Australia calling, no rush, good neighbours, no frost or snow, chooks help me but so do my barrells, but 2 is only for beginners! Get it to 3000 L or more than you can still wish for more! Great show!
Great Job on the Garden and layout. Nice rain water collection system. With that much water you could add a soaker hose to keep your beds watered too. Good job. Maybe delay the time for your price sheet at the end...goes by quickly...pause works great too :-) Good Job!
I would recommend something flexible between barrels. The enormous weight stress will loosen the connection pretty soon. Thank you for sharing your setup!
Beautiful rainbarrel system.Super organized gardens. What is the mulch that you are using between your beds? Is it dried leaves? Could you have made your actual growing beds a little bit bigger? Its a grea self sustaining setup that you put a lot of thought, hard work and planning into. Nice job ! Thanks for sharing it with us.
I've been researching rain barrels and once again...a sweet design idea has been found. I'm seriously leaning towards a vertical design over horizontal on cinder blocks
Lovely garden and water setup. You know what works well to make compost tea? Potato bags! They have that netting. There are other produce bags that have netting too.
I looked through your other videos in hopes that you had posted some updates. I would love to see how your garden grew with your setup. I want to create a garden area in my back yard, but I have large oak trees about every 20 feet each direction. I'll need to cut down at least 4, and trim more in order to get enough sunlight for anything to grow.
Excellent garden though it looks like you have alot of shade in the yard. I think it's illegal to collect rain water in the state of Colorado but I can't imaging they enforce this law so I might try this for my garden. Thanks a ton for sharing.
Hi Chris love your video, can you tell me where you purchased your white barrels and also the cost list does not show up on my video , thank you this is a great idea and awesome video
also, good to mention, if you bury the 4x4's it's considered a permanent structure like a deck or gazebo. thus a permit must be pulled and inspection performed. Bolted to a poured concrete pad eliminates this problem, however, in this case, I think an inspector would be a GOOD thing.
the rain barrels were from a food distributor, so they were safe. this year we have expanded the beds, reducing the size of the pathways. we have added a garden table between the two barrel setups. a nice organized space for starting seeds and keeping pots/tools, trays. we are hoping to add a greenhouse in another part of the yard so we can start seeds sooner. its all a learning process!! but so much fun!
good job,,very good job on explaining things ,,thank you i have barrels,,im been looking for away to do this,,and you took care of that thanks,,im going to put 8 barrels in line ,,do you think i would need to put the 2 inch hole in all 8??
Just a thought, would the down pipe that fills the barrels act as a hole for the pressure? That is a really cool space saving design though! I just have some barrels on the ground! so am going to build one of these this year. Thanks for posting!
I really appreciate you sharing the run down on exactly what products/supplies you used and the cost. Thanks for sharing in detail. :)
Great job! I like that you addresses the costs, and the reason on your building technique. I must say, you made a beautiful system. It is a very nice back yard setup. You should be proud.

Terry Ellis Thanks for the recommendation! Happy Gardening!
Chris I really like your organization and ideas. Really enjoyed watching your presentation. You are really inovative.
This is an awesome setup. I know there are many ways to accomplish this - I am thankful you shared your concept and approach and information. Look forward to future posts.
Great job, the tiered rain barrel system may fit my needs perfectly.
Very thorough and very organized. Learned a lot. Thank you! :-)
Many thanks for the video. It giving me the idea to build this rain barrel system for my garden.
Make it big. Rain adds up fast
Super clean and minimal setup. For a bit of sweat equity, you got great results for little money. Digging it.
Very impressive setup! I really like your dual rain barrel setup, and the rack they sit in. You do nice work! Hope you have a great garden again this year!
Great video - very professional. Thanks for the ideas.

One of the better videos on utube..
Nice presentation thanks.

Each 55gal barrel, if full, is only 440lbs. Nowhere near 1000lbs. 440lbs is still a significant amount of weight though.

nice set up and thanks for the video.
Fabulous ideas and construction!
Thanks for sharing. The rain barrel setup looks great!
you are a source of pride and an inspiration. your family should be proud of you. I am copying your work. good job...
Thanks for sharing, good ideas and you did a good job with how you built your system.
Well presented vid, and gardwn and water aystem. Thnk you for sharing much appreciated.
Excellent video, Chris! I have an urban Canadian garden of the same size and you've given me many great ideas for developing a small space cheaply and neatly. Thanks!
Your urban garden is great. You did a really nice job.

In my opinion, anyone who wants to make sure that a tornado doesn't blow away their compost pile is a HARDCORE GARDENER !!!
Nice garden thanks for the ideas I am definetly thinking about the rain barrel system that thing looks solid as a rock.
this is a really great idea, thank you for sharing
VERY NICE SET UP! Gardens not lawns! You rock Chris! \m/
Excellent design and build. With your wooden frame enclosing the barrels, it allows you to build a surrounding to enclose the structure. Keeping your water out of the sunlight would keep it cooler in temperature.
bravo, you got a great little slice of heaven there
That was an awesome system and a great video

dude I like your set up Very clean and nice looking
You did such a wonderful job! Thanks for sharing :)
5/5 and fav'd. Thank you very much for the invoice at the end. That alone makes this video a very good learning tool.
I appreciate you sharing your ideas.
Very good video. I liked how you made the mos tof your square footage. Very well explained.
GREAT handywork!
I enjoyed your video. Well done.

Thanks for the helpful tip and idea.
Awesome carpentry! Great garden, will steal a few ideas for my yard work!
Great job sir. Gives me great ideas!
great ideas really good job
Just a suggestion, you may half to paint the barrel/pipe with uv resistant paint to ensure the lasting of this system from the elements.
An added thought for rain collection: When using white barrels, paint them an opaque color or cover them so that sunlight cannot light the water and grow algae inside your barrels.
I know its 5 years later😂 But the truck bed liner spray is great for that. Sticks really well and holds up great.
Any algae is fertilizer for the garden...my Dad had 12 open barrels next to the lean tu at home. Rain water off the roof of the building filling the barrels up. Frogs jumped in and laid eggs. The tax pols ate the algae and the water became fertilizer for the garden that was next to the barrels.
your end results are very neat in appearance, good work
Awesome! Obvious that you take a lot of pride in this, as well you should!
Dude. I'd so want to marry you. Doing it & doing it right. Your complete explanation style is just a plus.
Nice work. Love your garden. Neat rainwater tanks. Down here in the driest inhabited continent on earth, rainwater tanks are a common feature. Google "rainwater tanks Australia" and you'll find a lot of useful design ideas and information. Have fun, and happy gardening!
loved the rain barrels
EXCELLENT BEGINNERS VIDEO!!!! Thanks
Great job! I can't wait to start my garden this coming year.
Incredible work. Would love to see if the vine has started up the trellis.
excellent job! you were very clear and understandable. thank you.
You are the bomb man! Absolutely beautiful!
this looks great!
Very neat job
Hell Yeah. Hope to have a home and a setup similar to yours one day. Ahead of the curve my friend!

Good job. Maybe delay the time for your price sheet at the end...goes by quickly...pause works great too :-)
Good Job!
Thank you !!! This is about the easiest I see out there. I think I can do this. This video was awsome !!!.
Nice job, thanks for sharing! You posted a few years ago, so hoping it all grew GREAt for ya!
Bravo! I really dig your garden set up. I see you could of used more area as bed or extended but there is always a reason and preference . Great job
I would recommend something flexible between barrels. The enormous weight stress will loosen the connection pretty soon. Thank you for sharing your setup!
loosen which connection?

that is a nice set up
Nice job !
Beautiful!

AWESOME barrel system. Well designed and built, for real. How much water pressure do you get? Does it taper off quickly as you use the water?
Excellent garden though it looks like you have alot of shade in the yard. I think it's illegal to collect rain water in the state of Colorado but I can't imaging they enforce this law so I might try this for my garden. Thanks a ton for sharing.
I read you enlarged your growing plots. I was wondering why you left so much walking space when you could have more growing area. 😃
wow great job!!
Hi Chris love your video, can you tell me where you purchased your white barrels and also the cost list does not show up on my video , thank you this is a great idea and awesome video
This looks great, thanks for posting it and well done! Do you think it would be safe to use the same design but add another barrel on top?
also, good to mention, if you bury the 4x4's it's considered a permanent structure like a deck or gazebo. thus a permit must be pulled and inspection performed. Bolted to a poured concrete pad eliminates this problem, however, in this case, I think an inspector would be a GOOD thing.

Thanks for the great ideas. You have a beautiful garden. Lots of hard work, but it really paid off, didn't it?
nice work.
nice set up
