Really interesting topic. I moved across the country in Jan. and my trusty perdigons and Frenchies never seem to work any more now that I am fishing the Gunpowder in Maryland so I have almost given up euronymphing there. Perhaps the low and slowish waters require something not sinking like a bullet. I will experiment with some flies that sink more slowly.

Perdigons and thread Frenchies are absolute killers. The ability to use a smaller fly, but get it down through the current where the fish are is so important. Some would be surprised how little their fly sinks in stronger current with materials that cause drag. You can also use a shorter tippet section which makes casting easier as well.

Thanks for the comments, and I agree with the Perdigons sinking so quick! I have fished some slow and clear sections before where I had the perfect view of how SLOW certain flies sink...it surprised me. What did you mean about the short tippet section, just in regards to casting? Tim www.troutandfeather.com

@@TimCammisa Correct. With standard nymphs I typically use a tippet that is twice the depth in length. This gets awkward around 3.5 feet so I usually decrease the drag of me fly which lets me shorten the tippet but still achieve depth and a natural presentation.

Hey Tim. If you think there should be fish in a particular spot will you change your fly multiple times if necessary to see if a fish will bite or will you normally move on to another spot and eventually try something else if the fish don’t take what you’re using? Tough day yesterday is why I’m asking. Just trying to understand how often and when flies should normally be changed if they aren’t taking what you’re offering them. Thanks!!!
