  • Jumbo fluke (summer flounder) fishing NJ wrecks on the Big Mohawk party boat.
    Catching some good-sized summer flounders on my favorite head boat. Sticky bottoms with fast drifts require heavier jigs to hold bottom. Left my bay and shore jigging outfits at home and had to use up to 4 oz bucktail at times. After struggling during the first drift, the captain gave me a couple of pointers which got me dialed in and ended up with a limit of fluke and sea bass. Winning the pool by a hair at the end was the icing on the cake :).
    Main setup:
    Rod: St Croix Avid Inshore
    Reel: Shimano Stradic CI4+
    Line: Powerpro 15lb hi-vis yellow
    Jigs and Bucktails from 2 to 4 oz
    Gulp 6" grubs

    Perfect party boat trip, splitting that pool with the mate is classy AF too...did you sleep overnight in the parking lot to grab the pulpit spot??

      Thanks Roger! Got real lucky with that pool fish, lol. Nah, didn't sleep overnight. Got to the boat at around 4 AM. Surprised one of the pulpit spot was available.

    Nice video man. Your always cleaning up on the jigs up there. I don’t go on the Mohawk anymore due to a bad experience I had on there but that’s a great video. You were using 4oz on the St. Croix Avid? That’s awesome the heavy action is rated up to 2oz glad you were able to jig with 4oz. Did you limit? That’s awesome

    • @dingfishing1186
      @dingfishing1186  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks Brendan. Sorry hear about your bad experience. To answer your question, yes I was able to jig 4 oz with the avid inshore mh. However, the rod did feel a little noodly with that much weight. Had to slow down the jigging motion , can't snap jig like with lighter jigs.

      Dingthings Fishing oh I thought you had the Heavy action. The MH is a little light for that but glad you got the job done.

    • @dingfishing1186
      @dingfishing1186  5 лет назад

      haha yes, the Heavy action would have been better with that much weight.

    This is great information on headboat. I see too many people coming on headboat and fish with tackles like they fish bass fishing, charter fishing or pier fishing with not enough weight and too heavy or lite of tackle. They wind up tangling and catching very little to none. How many ounce jig did the capt have you used for this trip?

    • @dingfishing1186
      @dingfishing1186  3 года назад

      thx, 1.5 to 3 oz used depending on the depth/drift speed

      Dingthings Fishing another boat out of Belmar was the Spray 3 ,we used to go on overnight cod trips in the winter,the boat had a wood burning stove to keep us warm ,this was 40 years ago ,is that boat still there ?

    • @dingfishing1186
      @dingfishing1186  5 лет назад +1

      No more Spray 3 in Belmar. Tim, you're a true old-timer. 😆 can't imagine wood burning stove on a head boat lol

      Dingthings Fishing ask around ,true story,we used to take turns knocking the ice off the railings it would put to much weight on the boat,I remember sliding up and down the boat,it was a lot of fun !!!
