Thank you for posting this! I've gotten back into painting recently. My mother is in her last days with cancer and I can't sleep. And stetching makes me nervous (perfectionism is more a problem in sketching, for me, than painting, where I'm looser). I used to paint a lot, partially inspired by my mother's work, but fell out of it. But now, I was just so... nothing helped, nothing was interesting or made me happy, I didn't have solid distraction.
The relaxed focus of painting, of mixing a beautiful hue and the little thrill of mixing another batch perfectly on the first try, the waitng periods (Where I usually go work on another piece) is so soothing to me. My fiance knows where to look for me when he can't find me, by the window, on the floor often enough, surrounded by my supplies. I've gotten into some watercolor and the satisaction of finally having proper PAPER to use allowed me to enjoy it far more. I'm going to use washed backgrounds with gradient effects and maybe stippling for floral pieces I do in acrylic. My mother's favorite were always my irises.
But, I've been without a job for a while now due to the pandemic (finding a new one that will also allow me to see my Mom and be safe (until recently it looked like she'd pull through, but COVID would end her chances, so it was very important to be so so careful). And supplies are expensive. I have about three brushes from my painting before. Until last week, I only had three acrylic colors. But I found some dirt cheap paint that isn't... great, but is enough for me to have this therapy while I need it, without spending money I honestly don't have. I tend to rely on a rather puny round brush, which has been okay for both acrylic and watercolor, but it is beginning to shed. I figured getting supplies would be better to shop for all at once, see the damage, then triage it and get what I can reasonably get, and then go from there.
My father actually found some chalk pastels (another background medium I love) and some watercolor brushes either of my Mom's, or that she had planned to give me this past Christmas, and those helped. But by now I"m so used to the crap brush that I'm not used to good brushes actually retaining so much water! I have pan watercolors and i generally try to keep them pretty dry, transfer as little pigment as possible to the mixing tray, and keep painting various projects until that mix is GONE. It's the old problem, in making art, you have to use up your beautiful beautiful supplies. It's why I switched to sketching. But right now... I need the feel of the brush, the paint. It's helped more than anything. That, a good audiobook or podcast, and I can buy a few hours that are less terrible.
Thank you, for in your small way, making this nightmare a little easier.

I like my round brush for the reasons you stated. I can make various sized strokes with it from wide to thin.
Now that I have a thin brush, I use it instead in those instances. But to me..probably because it was My First Brush, its been my favorite, my 'Go-to-brush'. I do have to learn to start using my other brushes more since I bought them.
    Who knew?

Strangely, I have a few brushes from my very first cheapo set, it's a brand you've probably heard of for being kind of infamously bad: Artist's Loft. The few I use tend to be the big/medium sized brushes, the biggest being 3/4 inch, and the smallest a flat size 8 that's about the size of my pinkie nail. I bought them about 4-5 years ago when I first got into painting, and they are still in great shape. Though, the smaller, thinner brushes lost shape and kind of... frayed? I can still use them in a pinch if I wet them, though.

I'm just starting out with painting during the covid-19 shutdown so going to the art supply store to pick out my brushes just isnt an option. Buying online can be difficult. This video helped alot! Im looking for a brush for gesso application. I bought just a basic house paint brush. I havent gotten it in the mail yet. I'm worried about shedding.
I used to do makeup professionally and I would often pick up paint brushes as a cheap alternative to some very expensi makeup brushes. A stiff bristle fan brusb properly altered makes a great mascara applicator too!
Thanks for the hand sanitizer tip. Unfortunately it's a hot commodity right now! I do have some I might be able to spare though.
    Stay safe!

Ryan Singrossi How wonderful that you’re putting your energy into something creative! 😍 As for distributing gesso, I’m a huge fan of sponges, I’ve done many videos showing why they are such a useful painting tool.
As for the hand sanitizer, gosh, little did I know when I made this vid that it would become so precious!! If my vids can help you even in a small way to get creative then you’ve helped make my day 💜 Stay safe and stay creative! 😃🎨🍷
