    • @DanielKeepingFish
      @DanielKeepingFish  4 года назад +1

      Thank you.
      Yes they are notorious for ruining Amazon Sword leave by rasping on them unfortunately.
      Sometimes they chew Vals right down, sometimes they leave them. Keeping them well fed and frequently offering vegetables like courgette (zucchini), carrot and similar may encourage them to leave your Vallisneria alone but they find the Swords just too temping I'm afraid.

  • @brianwatt8927

    How is this doing for you now Daniel? Do you still have it? Was going to give it a go in my new setup with sand & root tabs, like you though I have soft Scottish water, seen what you did in another video with Vals & coral sand might put together a wee trench see if it helps it get off to a good start.

    • @DanielKeepingFish
      @DanielKeepingFish  Год назад +1

      I don't still have it mate. I swapped this tank out for the Juwel Rio 450 which is where you saw the trench thing but the big fish in that tank kept pulling it out so I never really got to see how effective that was.
      What I will say is in the tank in this video I didn't buffer the water at all and as you can see it grew great. Each tank is so individual isn't it?

    I have this in my aquarium which I dose with tums every so often to maximize hardness(shrimp and snails also like it). It doesn't seem to grow as big as what you have... Curious to find out how you got them to grow the way they're advertised.

    • @DanielKeepingFish
      @DanielKeepingFish  3 года назад +1

      My water isn't particularly hard and I don't do anything to alter it.
      I have a layer of clay based substrate under the gravel. I planted the Crypts then left them alone. The took a while to get going but once they did you saw the result.
      I use floating plants in this tank and the lights aren't high end which I think is probably a good thing. Most Crypts aren't particularly light hungry. I find they grow better when they are getting only medium light to them.
      I dose a mixture of TNC Lite and TNC complete a couple of times a week but I'm not sure how much that would help these plants. Being heavy root feeders I added root tabs to the base of the plants and the area nearby every once in a while.
      Think one of the key things was leaving them alone. They don't like to be messed around with.
      Hope that helps.

  • @robertfletcher3421

    I agree with everything you have said. If like me you are fed up with Vallisneria invading everywhere in the tank then try Cryptocoryne balansae. When I was running the tack high tech if was fast growing. I have gone to low tech now as gas is getting hard to get as pups are all closed. To be honest I like low tech less trouble.

    • @DanielKeepingFish
      @DanielKeepingFish  4 года назад

      Definately Robert. I don't feel like we suffer for maintaining low tech set ups. Plenty of options these days to create nice scapes and environments for our fish without having the extra complications of high tech.

    Yours look really great! Just have mine in a new tank for 3 weeks and bought them as in-vitro (small) plants. It seems they have quite a hard time growing, also some melting is going on. They are planted in an aquasoil substrate, not sure if this soil is lowering the PH too much for this plant.. What do you think?

    • @DanielKeepingFish
      @DanielKeepingFish  4 года назад +1

      Well they have quite a wide tolerance range for pH. I would check that the roots are buried upto the crown with the crown above and level with the top of the substrate then I'd leave it alone. They don't like to be messed about with and they can melt a good bit while they adjust to your water. They can take a while to settle in and even then they can be slow growers at first but if we're patient with them they end up a magnificent looking plant. 👍

    Nothing bad about this plant. I do though keep it in a pot in the 240 gallon or it would take over the whole tank..and even then in a 8" pot its a statement of leaves that reach the 24" top of the tank and across about 10" or more. Its a keeper. If only all water plants were so robust...
